A NEW star was born as Theo Walcott justified England coach Fabio Capello's decision to keep faith in him – and jettison David Beckham – on a memorable night in Zagreb.
The Arsenal teenager scored a hat-trick as Capello's quest for World Cup qualification began in earnest with a first home defeat for Croatia in competitive matches.

Then, just for good measure, Wayne Rooney finally found the net for England as Slaven Bilic's side finished in a demoralised state after the 53rd minute sending-off of Robert Kovac.

All Croatia could manage in reply in this group six clash was a late consolation effort from substitute Mario Mandzukic.

It was all so different to just under two years ago in the same stadium, when then England coach Steve McClaren opted for an ill-fated 3-5-2 formation and saw his side lose 2-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier.

But England appear a different animal under Capello and, although this was only the second step on the long road to the 2010 finals in South Africa, the signs are encouraging after one of their most convincing displays in living memory.

Capello showed positive intent with the line-up he sent out, and his players backed him up with a performance of grit and commitment harnessed to their attacking abilities.

Walcott will rightly attract all the headlines more than two years after being the shock inclusion in Sven-Goran Eriksson's 2006 World Cup squad.

He only made his full debut for his country in Saturday's 2-0 win over Andorra in Barcelona but did enough to again keep Beckham on the bench until the closing stages.

And he showed great composure in netting England's first competitive hat-trick since Michael Owen's treble against Germany in Munich seven years ago in another World Cup qualifier.

A question mark will now inevitably hang over whether the 33-year-old Beckham can start another game for his country.

Capello opted not to man-mark midfield play-maker Luka Modric and the Tottenham player saw plenty of the ball during the early stages as the focal point of his side's attacks.

David James needed two attempts to grasp a shot drilled straight at him by Danijel Pranjic and then failed to hold on to a deep corner from Darijo Srna, and the England keeper would have been relieved to see Vedran Corluka drill the loose ball into the side-netting as the pressure steadily mounted on England.

But it was the visitors who went ahead in the 26th minute, Walcott being given a helping hand by the Croatian defence. Pranjic's clearance rebounded off Josip Simunic into the path of Walcott and the teenager made the most of his fortune as he drilled a fierce low shot across Stipe Pletikosa into the corner of the net.

Walcott could have added a second from a similar position soon afterwards but this time Pletikosa was able to tip his effort around the post.

Mladen Petric had a fierce low drive blocked by James, but the Croatians failed to cause any major problems in the opening 45 minutes.

And they became increasingly wary of the pace of Walcott who was cynically sent crashing to the ground off the ball by Simunic after a lightning run – a challenge which earned him a 38th minute yellow card.

England looked composed and Pletikosa did well to get his body behind a low, skimming free-kick from Frank Lampard.

Then, after 53 minutes, Croatia were reduced to 10 men when Kovac was sent off for an aerial challenge which left Joe Cole bloodied – and replaced by Jermaine Jenas.

England almost instantly made their numerical advantage count, with Walcott striking for the second time. Heskey and Rooney were involved in the build-up before the overlapping Walcott had time to pick his spot and send a low shot across Pletikosa, mirroring his opener.

England were now rampant and in the 63rd minute Rooney ended his 11-month international scoring drought.

Ashley Cole won the ball off Srna, picked out the run of Jenas and his low cross from the left flank was clinically dispatched by the Old Trafford player.

Lampard had an effort ruled out for offside before Mandzukic beat James from close range with 12 minutes remaining. But Walcott ended any hopes of a late Croatian revival as he collected a Rooney pass and slotted home for his hat-trick.

Croatia: Pletikosa, Simunic, R Kovac, Corluka, Pranjic, Rakitic, Petric (Knezevic 56), N Kovac (Pokrivac 62), Srna, Modric, Olic (Mandzukic 73). Subs not used: Runje, Krizanac, Leko, Klasnic. Sent Off: R Kovac (53). Booked: Simunic, Srna.

England: James, Brown, Terry (Upson 88), Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Walcott (Beckham 84), Lampard, Barry, Joe Cole (Jenas 55), Rooney, Heskey. Subs not used: Robinson, Johnson, Downing, Defoe. Booked: Heskey.

Surefire,

Do you seriously believe the players were unsettled by the media ? Maybe for once under a good coach England were able to produce a display & result that the players are capable of.
2

Peter Baleares,

Palma 11/09/2008 07:24:13
Where did that performance come from?
At last, someone is letting the players play like they do in the Premiership.

#5 Well I have to eat some humble pie here as I though Croatia would win. Havent seen the highlights yet, but the scoreline says it all really. Well done England. Strange how England can put 4 past Croatia and only 2 past Andorra though!
4

Addie,

dont know why I put #5 on my last comment either!

Fantastic performance. As I said yesterday England have a far better squad of players than Croatia and didn't deserve to lose the last twice against them.
After seeing the Scotland team I had a lovely Scotland/England double.
A few dodgy results last night though.
Luxemburg beating Switzerland for one.
6

Peter Baleares,

Palma 11/09/2008 07:57:18
#5 Addie, Yeah, better pass me a big slice of that pie too mate, I didnt fancy us at all!!
Maybe Croatia fell into the old England trap of believing their own hype, and thinking the point were already in the bag.
I followed the three games on Gillette Soccer Special and Scotland were cruising until Mc Manus got sent off, I think though, you would have settled for a 1-2 win this time yesterday and the win puts you right back on track, and one less away game to play.

Didnt see either game, only the clips on the news.
great result for both Scotland and England.
How much did the sending off affect the Croatians? They were only 1-0 down when it happened, correct?

Who cares? It's only England.

No. 10:- Yeah, who cares. Who would be the first to complain if the English said the same thing about Scotland? You perhaps?
10

Putting the result in perspective. England were only 1 up before Croatia went down to 10 men.
11

Dublin Don,

No 11 You are prob right but would Scotland get as high profile a feature in an English national broadsheet. More than likely just a little footnote.

Not me. Scotland have been ignored for years and that's England's perogative, good for them, that's their right.

Personally, I couldn't care less if England win or draw.

But I do love to read about them when they lose - at anything.

Loosen up mate, some of my best friends are English.
13

Nell,

Going to California 11/09/2008 09:49:01
No. 13:- Yeah, you're probably correct in that statement. But going back to my post at No. 9, I was asking for some comment as to whether the sending off affected the Croatians game as they were only 1-0 down at the time. I was hoping for some constructive comments not the put down at No. 10.

I think you'll find that Scotland gets pretty decent coverage in the main broadsheets.

We would have taken 0-1 win before the kick-off, Croatia afterall are No 5 in the FIFA rankings.

At least England were able to exploit the Croatia sending off, many teams cant, Joe Cole had to have twelve stitches, and Terry got a kick in the head for
challenging a high ball, so Croatia aggression got them what they deserved.

#10 Dee,

You obviously do as you have bothered to comment.

Okay, okay. I admit it, I'm secretly in awe of England and spend my every waking hour grappling with my deep, deep sense of insecurity over being Scottish.

The only outlet I have for this helpless psychological condition is to come on newspaper forums and pretend that England don't matter.

Now, where's ma medicine?

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

Told you the lads would make England proud, and didn't they do a good job! If the ref had played fair and given the penalty that we deserved, and the goal from Lampard it would of been 6-0.
18

Ayegudyin,

To be honest, that was a very surprising result, England needing the extra man to come across as a dominant force.

without a doubt, all the Engerlish will now think they will win the world cup and accept nothing less, the media will turn against capello (again) when he gets his inevitable bad result, and yous will disgrace your country again throwing chairs at some poor locals in another country cos they got offended with you leaving your slug trail of arrogance across europe. id hate to be an england fan, living in perpetual missery when you keep get reminded that you are not actually the best team in the world.

I liked it when the commentator said yesterday "if there was a corner of the world that hasn't heard of walcott, they have now" as if some little tribe in Bago-bago, papua new guinea stopped fishing to watch an english world cup qualifier...

#24, to be honest, id completely forgotten about england, until i was in barcelona last saturday and was repulsed by the english who swarmed there and forced their englishness in the faces of everyone in that otherwise beautiful city. the streets were lined with people in red away tops, the beaches were taken up by 20 foot long england flags with noone sitting on them, the tranquility of quiet side street cafes under the spires of ancient churches were ruined by english flags hung up on the walls like graffiti next to topless fat sunburned english people shouting at the waiters, surprised that they didnt understand their drunken slurs in a foreign language. im all for travelling and football, but respect for the places travelled to is more important.

#27,

Not so, this morning I have nothing but admiration for the skillful footballers of our southern neighbours! It was good to see the England players, support and media taking onboard the leadership of an Italian. Winning is in the Italian mentality from the early days of the Republic. It's good to see England ditching their old and cherished Anglo-Saxon values for some Latin flair and efficiency.

Could it be that Henry VIII, William of Orange and the House of Hanover got it wrong? And Rome is to be embraced afterall!!!
28

guenevere,

You quite conveniently forget it was Englishmen on the pitch last night,Capello may be the head coach, but it was the courage and skill of 11 Englishmen that won the game, not the advice of a guy on the sidelines.

Not so, I'm fully aware of the personnel operating on the football pitch for England, but clearly, the Italian way suits the players.

The only attribute missing from the new Azzuri flavoured team, is a healthy supply of phlegm, ready to apply on an unsuspecting opponent. It's the Italian way.......

I see Ass Jockey from Fife is spouting his anti-Rangers vitriol, with an anti-English flavour today.
England played like they should all the time, given the talent at their disposal.
If only Scotland had half of their players to choose from.
I knew that England had better players than Croatia, for some reason they don't seem to play like the world-class players they are.
Last night they did and hopefully Mr Capello can lead them to victory in South Africa.
Let's face it, who at the moment are better?
They can beat Spain.
Brazil are not as good as everyone thinks.
Argentina? They'll be lucky to qualify, mark my words.
And after that?
Germany?
Don't think so.
Get a wee fiver on the mighty Engarlund to lift the trophy and annoy the rest of the world for another 40 years!!!!!!!!

Why the hell would the hemisphere affect anything?Average temp. in June in SA is about 18 degrees. In other words, put your money on a Scotland-England final.

Not much money though.

28. "im all for travelling and football, but respect for the places travelled to is more important."

Aye, like Manchester? Come on, don't pretend this is an England-only problem: much of Europe is exactly the same.

The behaviour of England fans abroad is nothing compared to that of Glasgow Rangers, both Belgrade clubs, all Croatian clubs (and Croatia itself); most Seria A Italian clubs and, jesus, don't get me started on the Russians! Those gentlemen really mean business.

As for respecting other cultures, the Spanish are well known for their racist chants against British black players. I like Spanish culture, but let's not get too carried away: they have their faults.

I was actually disappointed at half time. i thought england played the long ball too much and it was more of the bad old stuff. We scored a goal but the game could have gone either way. It wasnt until Croatia had a player red carded did England start to play the ball on the floor. From that point they were a pleasure to watch. I would like to have seen them try that type of football from the start. i have never liked watching the low success percentage passes over the top. too frustrating. thank god for Theo. he made all the difference.

#48" the fact that Catholics are not allowed on the throne bothers no one in England" Those few remarks have just proven my point. It is obvious then that the people of England are content with such blatant sectarian bigotry.Suppose the wording of the British act of settlement 1701 said"no black person is worthy to wear the crown of England"Would the people of England feel that acceptable? I do not think so.Or maybe the people of England are just so ignorant that they are blind to such bigoted laws.In other words they just follow like sheep!
