POP singer Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio have become minority partners in the ownership of the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
Cuban-born Estefan and record producer Emilio held a news conference with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross but declined to discuss how much of a stake they had bought in the team.
"It is a private company and we will keep those things private but Emili
o is a partner and Gloria is a partner," said Ross.
Estefan is best known internationally for her Eighties hits such as Rhythm is Gonna Get You and Dr Beat and together with her husband she owns several businesses in Florida.
"We are thrilled to be a part of our hometown team," said Estefan, adding that she had been a "hardcore" fan since the Dolphins' unbeaten season in 1972.
The link-up is an attempt to boost the profile of the Dolphins within South Florida's huge Latin-American community which is strongly influenced by immigrants from Cuba.
"There is no-one better that reflects the Latin community than Gloria and Emilio Estefan," said Scott.
India 'under-16s' get caught outIF ONLY the science of today had been available when Scotland lost out to a suspiciously mature Saudi Arabia Under-16 team in the World Youth final 20 years ago.
In the anniversary week of the young Scots' glorious failure at Hampden in 1989, it emerged Indian officials have been left red-faced when 16 of the 30 boys selected for a training camp for the Asian under-16 championships qualifiers were found to be over-aged. The problem was exposed when the players underwent MRI tests.
Too late to apply the same tests in Saudi, 20 years on?
Accies mascot pulls a fast oneHAMILTON Accies may have failed to land any silverware last season but they made a winning start to the new campaign when their mascot, Hammy the Hamster, won the annual SPL Mascot race at Hamilton races at the weekend.
There may, however, still be a steward's enquiry as it is believed that it was the club's under-19 left-back Declan McAvoy who was inside the costume. McAvoy recently signed a new one-year deal with Accies, so we suspect Hammy could be short odds to defend his title in 12 months' time.
TALES FROM THE TABS
LITTLE ZIDANE BIG NEWSCELTIC assistant manager Mark Venus was asked at a press conference yesterday if he knew anything about the club trying to sign Mourad Meghni. Tony Mowbray's No 2 told reporters that he had never heard of him.
The question had obviously been prompted by the back-page story in the Sun, which claimed that Celtic were "weighing up a big-money move for the player nicknamed the Little Zidane". The story said that Lazio midfielder Meghni had been targeted as a potential signing by Mowbray as the new manager tries to build a squad capable of winning the SPL title and challenging in Europe.
Meghni, known for his close ball control and accurate passing, came through the Claire-fontaine academy in France. At 25, he has three years to run on his deal at Lazio and, according to the Sun, could cost as much as £4 million.
The Daily Express, meanwhile, reported on its back page that Motherwell and Scotland striker David Clarkson is a £600,000 target for Coca-Cola Championship side Bristol City, although the English team have yet to table an offer.
