A crowd of 50,000 turned out in the Capital to welcome Scotland's Olympic heroes home today.

Gold-winning medal cyclist Chris Hoy was joined by fellow Scots medallists Ross Edgar, Katherine Grainger and David Florence for an open-top bus parade down the Royal Mile.

The historic street was packed with flag-waving well-wishers as the bus made its way from Edinburgh Castle, where a reception for the Olympians was held, down to Holyrood Park.

"It means so much to be home but also to see how warm the reception has been and how much interest there has been," Hoy said today.

"We had no idea in the village just what was going on.

"You get the odd text message and e-mail saying it's crazy, but you just don't take it in."

Hoy, 32, became the first Briton for 100 years to win three golds at a single Olympics, having previously hit gold in Athens four years ago.

The athletes waved to the crowds from the top deck of the Saltire-clad bus, with Edinburgh native Hoy picking out friends and relatives below.

Edinburgh's Lord Provost George Grubb said the parade through the heart of the Capital had been a "staggering success".

He added: "Everyone who came out today had a fantastic time.

"Many more people came along than we had expected and it was perfect opportunity to welcome the medallists back – I think people will be talking about it for quite a long time.

"The huge turnout at the Royal Mile is a sign of how proud Edinburgh people are of our athletes and of the massive impact that Chris Hoy has made on the global stage."

The council later estimated 50,000 people had turned out.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was among those who greeted the athletes at the Castle. She referred to a huge multi-storey poster of Hoy that has been erected on Lothian Road, with him holding a bike above his head in front of Edinburgh Castle and the words "King of Scotland" emblazoned along the bottom.

She said: "I don't think there's anybody in Scotland who would disagree with that title right now – you are absolutely amazing."

Edgar, 25, who clinched silver in the men's keirin behind Hoy, described winning the medal as "the biggest thing that's ever happened in my life".

He went on: "Just to be in the same era as Chris, it's an amazing thing."

Rower Grainger, 32, picked up her third silver medal in three consecutive Olympics.

Asked whether she would be competing in the London 2012 Games, she said: "It's only two days since Beijing so it's quite early to make any decisions.

"Anyone who's been to an Olympics would agree it's the most inspirational, exciting thing to be part of."

Canoeist Florence, 26, spoke of the moment he took a silver medal in the men's slalom.

"The run went fairly well fortunately in the final. We came to the bottom and crossed the line and that was it," he said.

"That was ten years of pressure over."

It's time for the Hootsmon to retract the report about what Chris Hoy has supposedly said, and apologise, or put into the public domain evidence that supports their original "ridiculous" story.

This could go all the way to the Press Council.

Well done Chris Hoy - but watch out that Provost Grubb doesn't steal your limelight (or your gold medals for that matter)

Story 1 - Hoy attacks 'ridiculous' plan for Scottish Olympics team: Published Date: 25 August 2008, By CATHERINE SALMOND

SPORTING legend Chris Hoy has slammed SNP proposals to create a Scottish Olympic team, branding the idea as "ridiculous".

Story 2 - Hoy refused to back Sir Sean's Olympic call: Published Date: 25 August 2008
By DAVID GUNN
OLYMPIC gold medallist Chris Hoy today refused to back a call by actor Sir Sean Connery for a separate Scottish Olympic team. The triple gold medal winner has already been quoted as describing a Scottish team – an idea favoured by First Minister Alex Salmond – as "ridiculous".

There are other Hootsmon stories that carry the "ridiculous" comment.

What Chris Hoy has said today is, "I feel a bit upset that I have been quoted as saying the idea of a Scottish Olympic team is ridiculous."

So the notion that the "ridiculous" comment can be qualified and defended by the Hootsmon is utter nonsense, because Chris Hoy is now claiming he never said it in the first place.

What is clear is the context in which all these Hootsmon stories have been concocted. There are all baseless attacks on the SNP.

The usual media sentiment applies:
"never let the truth get in the way of a good story".

Regardless, well done Chris. You did us proud.

What I want to know is, were the extremely attractive, skimpy-underwear clad, gaggle of young ladies I saw in Castle Street at lunchtime related to this joyous homecoming?

Did anyone else see them? What was that all about? I meant to ask them, but I kept tripping over my tongue.

he didn't say he never said the word 'ridiculous' if your quote is accurate. he said he never said the idea of a Scottish Olympic team was ridiculous. there's a difference.

What makes someone taking part in a minority sport a HERO!!

Well done Team GB on your success, no doubt you worked very hard at it, but I wouldnt call you heros.

If anything, the heros are the tax payers who helped you get where you are today!

Yeah, I was vaguely aware of him, but somehow didn't manage to get around to looking at him as my attention was focused elsewhere...

I wonder what they were up to? Still, brightened up my lunchtime!

Where was the live TV coverage? It's an absolute disgrace that the Glasgo0w-based TV companies have once again shunned Edinburgh events.

Great to see them being recognised for their achievements but my children were all at school and missed all of this. They would have loved to have been there. It's a shame the Council didn't want the local children to attend.

Calum10, for Christ's sake, I spent ages arguing with you on this very point - you didn't read what he actually said when the article was first published, you were the one condemning him without having read what he said, and now you have the brass neck to criticise the Scotsman despite the fact that they reproduced his comments in full!

You're a complete idiot, man. You were told at the time that your condemnation of Hoy was unreasonable, but you kept on and on telling us that he wasn't fit to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

All you need to do at this point is apologise for your previous stupidity and then shut the hell up.

Your quote from 2 days ago:
---
Calum10 25/08/2008 13:55:09:
Chris Hoy should apologise for his "ridiculous" comment. If there wasn't a Scotland team competing at the Commonwealth Games there would be no velodrome in Edinburgh for him to become a world beating cyclist.

Chris Hoy should aplogise to the people of Edinburgh who built the velodrome in 1970 for the Commonweath Games.

Chris Hoy should apologise to the people of Glasgow who will build in a state-of-the-art velodrome for Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Chris Hoy should apologise for insulting his own country which has supported him throughout his career.

The only thing "ridiculous" is a Scot masquarding as something he is not. Chris Hoy is certainly NOT a goodwill ambassador for Scotland.

Despite being told time and again to re-read his comment rather than just the headline to the story you just banged on and on.

It was great to see the olympic medal winners today but why did Chris Hoy have to spend the whole trip along the High Street talking to a TV interviewer? It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him and I'm sure he would have rather been looking over the front of the bus waving to everyone that had turned out to greet him and his fellow olympians. The interview could easily have been done before or after the parade. I'll have to watch the telly to see what he looks like!

NO 12, THE TIME OF THE PARADE WAS A COMPROMISE TO ENABLE ALL THE ATHLETES TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND, NOT AN OBSTACLE FROM THE COUNCIL TO DETER THE MANY PEOPLE WHO WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE BEEN THERE - NO MATER WHAT TIME IT HAD GONE AHEAD AT IT WOULDN'T HAVE SUITED EVERYONE - THAT'S LIFE!

Waletr, the word 'ridiculous' as used by Hoy was all over the other papers and media.

However, unlike the Scotsman and the Daily Record, it was more or less presented as aprt of a story about the need for more funding.

As Chris Hoy himself acknowledges in his 'real' comments, the Scotsman and Record misrepresented his comments as an attack upon the idea of a Scopttish Olympic team.

Do not forget they splashed his comments on headline banners over their newspapers, accompanying it with rent-a-quote Labour politicians talking about 'narrow nationalism' and 'parochialism' and all the other words in the Scotland Office lexicon of approved terminology.

Why is the government and the media (especially the state run BBC) using sport to create excessive patriotic feeling within the population?

Can the answer be found in George Orwell's book 1984?

So how were we supposed to know about this victory parade?? I heard vague rumours that there might be an open-topped bus in Edinburgh on Wednesday while listening to Radio Scotland on Saturday, but no indication of route or timing.
I bought an Edinburgh Evening News yesterday to get details.........zilch! I watched the TV, listened to the radio, again nothing.........until it was actually happening! I would have gone if there had been proper information.
And why put it in the middle of the day while many of the adoring public are at work/school. etc?? Was it because of what he said about Team GB? Compare the scenes in Mansfield and Cardiff yesterday for THEIR Olympic heroes. Now that WAS a good turnout!
50,000 estimated: probably folk that were just around the city centre anyway and got wind of it. Could have been 500,000 if it had been proeprly publicised and in the evening!
Well done Chris, anyway!

So... team GB, eh? My passport says the UK of GB and NI. That's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Have we cut Northern Ireland adrift from our Olympic efforts? #26 is right, and NI has been traded off.
