AS INTRIGUE bubbles away at both ends of the Scottish Premier League on this final weekend of the league season, the temptation might be to mistake a thrilling conclusion for proof of the vibrant state of the game in Scotland at present.
In actual fact, it obscures what should be obvious to anyone who has watched football in this country on a regular basis this season. Indeed, the failing brand that is Scottish football has been put on display elsewhere, courtesy of performances by S
cottish teams abroad. The national side wilted in the heat of Macedonia in September, by which time Rangers had already taken their leave of the Champions league at the penultimate qualifying stage against the hardly stellar FBK Kaunas. Motherwell lost comprehensively to the rather more stylish Nancy, while First Division Queen of the South were the victims of a very average Danish side Nordsjaelland. Indeed, those who have watched lower division football in Scotland this season will confirm bleakly that such poor fare is flushed right through the tiers.

The game is rotting from the head down. When a team boasting a seven-point lead just a few weeks ago, and who at one point strung together 12 successive wins, ends up hoping for another result to go their way on the final day, it is clear we are dealing with a lack of quality. Celtic could showcase how to throw away a league title, handing it to a Rangers team that is as average as the one gifted the championship in 2005.

According to Celtic player Georgios Samaras, Rangers' style of football is unworthy of champions. Ignoring the Greek player's generous helping of hair, the argument about which Old Firm side plays the more attractive football calls to mind the classic rammy involving two bald men and a comb.

Such a spectacle might actually be more entertaining than some of the matches viewed this season. Celtic themselves have featured in a few of them, something which Samaras should know as well as anyone from his normal position on the substitutes' bench. It's not only the diminishing standard of play apparent in the Old Firm which alarms. All teams save for Hearts can be said to have gone backwards, and even Csaba Laszlo's side, for all their sometimes admirable battling qualities, have been no-one's idea of an entertaining outfit. Dundee United have run the OId Firm close on each occasion they have played them, but again this perhaps says more about Rangers and Celtic than the Tannadice side whose league form dipped after Christmas.

Hibernian at least seemed to want to entertain. Mixu Paatelainen's formations at the beginning of the campaign were often top-heavy with forwards. A run of poor results saw him return to the drawing board. In general, the less imaginative Hibs have been, the better their results.

In the bottom half of the table the unseemly scuffle to avoid relegation becomes the likes of Falkirk, St Mirren and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Hamilton survived, having also ditched their expansive play of the opening weeks. Falkirk's reputation for passing football un-stitched horribly. Anyone who viewed their performance in last week's defeat against St Mirren can lay claim to have witnessed the nadir: the worst display posted by any team in a season crammed full of rivals for this crown.

In short, it's often felt like an endurance test. Having reached the penultimate weekend of the season, even next weekend's Homecoming Scottish Cup final between Falkirk and Rangers can't help but look a bit low-rent. Falkirk could be relegated today and thus will be the latest First Division to compete in this supposedly showpiece occasion. The loss of status won't help convince anyone that they can provide a stiffer resistance than managed in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup final in January, when going down 3-0 at the same venue and against the same opponents. We were not handed much cause for optimism from the start. Indeed, before the start. Rangers' inability to score against Kaunas in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying tie with the Lithuanians always left them vulnerable. The loss of a late winning goal to Kaunas signalled a long hard season ahead for Walter Smith. Nothing that has occurred since has disproved this notion, although the manager has got away with pitching a midfielder with only limited experience of professional football into the fray over these last few, vital weeks. His original preference had been to introduce former Toronto FC player Maurice Edu more gradually.

But perhaps the most devastating critique on the current state of Scottish footballer has been delivered via the soles of Davie Weir's sleek white boots. The 39-year-old has strolled serenely through yet another season.

For pure entertainment, the SPL has been second to none.

Disallowed goals, wrongly dished out reds cards, players banned for life (that's the same as life under the UK legal system), early parole, players fined, managers sent to the stand, referees singing in various clubs, clubs almost going bust, ticket scandals...and much more.

Don't know how anyone can catch their breath

Alan P is correct.
This is the worst standard of football played in Scotland, probably ever. For any one of the twelve to say otherwise is sheer and utter nonsense. The football is pathetic. Unless you are of the mindset that three points against the blind (no offense meant to them) is the sign of success and there are plenty supporters like that who think winning is everything, this season has been rubbish.
Far to much media bulls--t about the quest for Europe and not enough about the lack of the qualities required to play there.
Turkeys looking forward to Xmas.

Respect your point of view, and clearly there are ares of the game this season that need working on.

However, to say it is the worst ever tells me you might be a bit younger than I am.

OK, not great players (punters have been whinging about that since the introduction of the non-bladder ball)

You have to look at the enjoyment factor.

This has been a season of that.

The Scottish game is not dead. It's just waiting on the ocean to part.

Which has happened before, BTW.

A very well written article with bucket loads of truth.
Celtic and Rangers are absolutely rubbish and therefore, teams who are 25 points behind them in 3rd and 4th are even worse -
I still believe it is the SPL's fault, they are void of ideas and incapable of growing the brand - The SFA needs to hire a PR agency, they need direction, they need ideas, they need someone who can make their brand exciting, introduce new ideas, do things differently to other countries, be the front runner by introducing rules that are completely at odds with other nations.
Things like season long bans for players who behave in the manner Lafferty did, bonus points for scoring more than 3 goals, a bigger league where teams play each other twice - and then marketing and more marketing, SFA clinics, assistance from government making football compulsory at schools, that doesnt mean boys need to play it, but the sport must be offered at EVERY government school. All Scotland games must be shown on terrestrial television, all league football must be shown on terrestrial television, Scotland needs drastic changes -
Rangers will probably draw tomorrow because they ARE that bad - AND Celtic will probably win by one goal because they are a little bit better at grinding out a result.

The Kids Are Alright,

The tragedy is not how poor our league is its that many teams are not being permitted to show their true value.

Corruption in the SPL is ever present.
You can feel it,touch it,hear it.
We can even smell it.

Whilst these teams are being directly affected by this known corruption then they are being strangled at birth.
They are being prevented from being able to flourish, pick up valuable points that should rightly have been theirs and as a consequence finish lower down the league than they should.

Some teams have even missed out in a European slot because of the corruption being shown against them in crucial and vital games.
A couple of SPL managers have recently went to the extent ofbeing willing to face punishment and actually being punished by the SFA if they dare have the audacity to publically declare footballs-corruption in any public forum.

Corruption is strangling the grass roots of Scottish football.
Unless and until those blatantly biased and corrupt practises are stopped, then Scottish Football will never be allowed to improve.

Pressure will ratchet up at Tannadice and a moments hesitation by the defence will see big Wilkie power in a header before half time.

The second half will see Walter start with four forwards and thus the seige at the alamo commences....

Nacho will rattle the equaliser on 70 mins with the winner coming from Miller on 83 mins

That being the case then the person you dont want to be your teacher is Walter.

Walter cannae count.

Take the away game against Aberdeen a couple of months ago,he needed to win that and go top.

So Walter went with a criticisingly one up front.
He went 4-5-1.

Nevertheless on his arrival back in Glasgow Walter insisted he never went 4-5-1- but 4-3-3.

Not only can Walter not distinquish figures properly but his geography is not all it should be either.

Put it this way.
If his team dont turn up at Tannadice the morra, then Walter blaming his geography teacher will not wash with Rangers fans, I fear.
56

Gordon Strachan will stay and I want him to stay. His record is better than anyone's in the last 40 years (that's one third of Celtic's history)

Incidentally, the fans don't allow managers to stay and go - the board do.

Final point, Rangers deserve the title Celtic have thrown it away and Rangers to their credit have dug in. I am disgusted with the desperate cheating from some RFC players and more desperate pleas from RFC fans - but I guess starvation brings desperation.

It will be exciting, intersting and watchable tomorrow. It will be great for CFC to win it, but if they do in all honesty - it's hardly deserved for below par performances since January.

Two draws is my prediction.

Smith doesn't need the hassle, stress and he would probably admit his best days are behind him. In the last 12 months I have noticed Smith's body language - his shoulders have become a little more rounded, his face more saggy than craggy, his eyes becoming less interested with each passing week. Walter knows he should be spending these twilight days with his family
and relaxing instead of being under the duress of thousands of booing angry fans, most of them sectarian and explaining to the media the antics of the cheats and boozebags under his authority.

He may be a championship winner again tomorrow, but it's an swansong. He's off.

I think walter will resign come what may. If rangers win the title, it allows him to leave on a high, if they lose the title, then the financial implications will cripple rangers for the next 5-10 years and he'll be well out of it.

Either way, can't see walter hanging around. If he wins the title, he'll be returned to 'legend' status...his first stay at rangers ended in the sack and winning the title this year would make that detail more obscure in the history of his rangers' career.

At tannadice they are a different proposition, but I think Miller will be too busy for big Wilkie - and the likes of Novo and Boyd will feed of Wilkie's mistakes.

Remember in the 2003 run, Wilkie scored an own goal and gave RFC two penalties. I can see a similar scenario.

71

There's two kinds of 'diving'.

There is going down under illegal contact when you could have stayed on your feet...for me that isn't cheating. If someone is late sticking a leg in and your options are lousy, go down. That's what I'd do , and it's not cheating as far as I'm concerned.

There is another form of 'diving' which for me is cheating and that is when a player goes down when there has been no contact and is essentially trying to con the referee into believing that there was contact.

The most embarressing example I've EVER seen of this in my life was Kris Boyd against dundee united when he was about 6 feet awat from the nearest opponent and threw himself into the air.

One of the most sinister incidents that I've EVER seen in my life was kyle lafferty's cheating last weekend which was a carbon copy of lovenkraand's antics with alan thomson although I'll grant you that on that occassion, thomson did at least touch lovenkrand's.

Boyd is a terrible diver.

He is embarrassing and that one you mention was unbelievably bad - why didn't Gordon Smith do anything? Or say anything? Why didn't Walter Smith do ro say anything? Why didn't the ref do or say anything?

Miller's a bad diver too.

But Lafferty's case was just too blatent to ignore. That was cheating at it's very worst - he should get a 10 game ban for that one.

If I recall Jaunjo banjoed Lenny. And was sent off.

I know Lenny is a hard man but he's not invincible.

I suppose when Lenny was assaulted (smashed in the head from behind then kicked on the head lying on the deck unconcious) by those two Rangers thugs in Ashton Lane he was play acting as well?

It's gonna be mental, nervy, heart stopping stuff tomorrow.
Whatever direction the title is heading in, I can see 1 goal being enough to turn it the other way with 5 minutes to go, just like 2005.

It won't be for the feint hearted that's for sure. Even were Celtic winning 1v0 and rangers losing 2v0 with 5 minutes to go, you wouldn't put the mortgage on it ....Hearts equalise in the last minute ? Rangers to get 2 goals in the last 5 minutes ? Both are possible outcomes.

It will be nail-biting stuff methinks. Even were DU 3vO up with 10 minutes to go, I wouldn't rule out rangers coming back and getting a draw. Until the fat lady sings tomorrow, the title will be dangling in the air....looking forward to it, but it is going to be horrendous on one level.

Just because the SFA review panel give the wrong decisions doesn't alter the facts.

Have a wee peek at Murray and co, before having a go at CFC's board.

At 7 points clear in Jan and looking at the poor quality of RFC - we had enough in the locker to win this league by a distance - but we've thrown it away, we've gift wrapped it so many times for rfc, it's now up to them - to accept it. Or are you uncomfortable with the tag of champions? Is it too big a burden for this current RFC team?

Dundee must be bracing itself for the arrival of around 25,000 Scotland's Shame tomorrow. Going from various news reports, the 6,000 or so with tickets are the tip of the iceberg as regards how many will be in the city for the match....just whiling away the 90 minutes, quietlt in a bar, with a martini...just what we've come to expect from SS.

Tell you what, win or lose the title, there will be trouble in Dundee after the game...and it will be all the fault of the local council/police/electricity board/ DC Thomsons so 'n' it will by ra way.

If rangers win, there will be disorder, vandalism and violence. The same will be true if rangers lose although the scale will be more grand.
In fact, get 'ready' for manchester mark 2 if Celtic win the league tomorrow. They will cause mayhem up there if it's 4 in a row, utter mayhem.

Pity the poor folk of dundee....it's different from last year, because they needed to beat aberdeen by 6 goals or something, and they travelled north with low expectations...and it had only been a week or so since they'd ransacked manchester.

This time around, they haven't rioted for a whole year (wow!) and they're heading up there thinking that the title's in the bag....Gulp!

Most of that mob will most likely be in dundee tomorrow and they don't take kindly to disappointment.

If rangers lose the title tomorrow, anyone walking around dundee near to the stadium/ train station/ city centre will be taking a considerable risk to their personal safety.

Strachan will be the first to accept responsibility in the unlikely even that rangers win the title tomorrow...I do actually think it unlikely that rangers will beat DU and I also find it unlikely that Celtic won't beat hearts...when you put those two together, then the inescapable conclusion is that Celtic will likely emerge with the title...it stands to reason...since rangers haven't won there for three years, it can hardly be said 'likely' that they will tomorrow. Celtic will beat hearts at least 2 in every 3 matches at CP, therefore, it is 'likely' that Celtic will beat them.

Admit it, if things go tomorrow as are 'likely' , Celtic will be champions.

Yes it gets one of us another title but in a few months time the Champions just may be on the receiving end of one helluva roasting in the CL.

#183 Bosco. If we ie Rangers win the title, then I have fears for our potential performances in Europe. As you have indicated, the quality of football in the SPL this season has been miserable. To make it in the CL. teams need money and plenty of it.No team in Scotland has that sort of money, in order to build a team that will shine in the CL.

Bosco Bhoy68,

Both clubs are way off what they once were in terms of players in starting 11.
Im very aware that the financial landscape of the SPL has dramtically altered with the rise of the EPL and nowadays Celtic and Rangers not only lose out on players to top clubs in England but often to teams fighting relegation or even in the Championship.

Only in the last week we have read about Celtic being interested in signing a guy from Swindon and Rangers offloading their captain to West Brom.

Probably the average wage at Ibrox in the next few years will be around £8000-£10,000 with it only slightly higher at CP and this means we have to accept not second tier players but often third tier water carriers.

For me however i think both could do a better job of developing our own talent and picking affordable technically gifted players on the continent who can enhance our squads.

Things dont need to be so bleak in terms of quality of football at CFC and RFC. There are other minor type leagues whose big clubs wouldnt even have a Broadfoot/VoH in their reserves.

We must do better or the league will become a turn off for kids growing up on a steady diet of the likes Ronaldo in the EPL or Messi footie from Spain.

Saturated TV coverage means nowadays guys have less tolerance for matches that are far from compelling which i must say much of the SPL is. The growing trend of kids to be sporting EPL shirts around Glasgow is testimony to the fact that the SPL cant take for granted that its customers will always be there.
172

Leatherhead,

23/05/2009 19:48:34
Corruption in the SPL is,for me,the biggest challenge facing the game in Scotland,it has been for decades.

Graham Spiers touched on the subject on Radio Snyde this afternoon, though none of the other guests encouraged him to continue, he did expand a little.

This year in particular has thrown up an awful lot of conspiracy theories he said.
Yes there has been plenty in the past but they seem to be getting made every other week at the moment he continued.

He touched on the ever increasing number of conspiracies being as a result of LIVE TV with this giving "ordinary" fans the chance to witness for themselves the level, type and amount of controversial decisions being made but more importantly NOT being made.
At least not being made in the way the viewer would expect these decisions to go.

The appeal of Bougherra was one typical example but the worst this season was Laffertys disgrace.

How can Scottish football expect to improve when blatantly corrupt practises are practised and encouraged.
173

Boyne Bhoy,

As tomorrow's games draw closer - I thought I'd give all footy fans a wee poem that I penned in the last half hour.
--------------------------------------------------

The calm before the storm

The bruised and battered,
Their minds blood spattered
The fit and strong,
Their patience stretched long
The fiesty, the meek,
With no troubles to seek,
The normal, the freaks
Recall troughs and peaks
While the humble and proud,
Both want to shout, scream out loud
The expectant ex-pats,
Watch the seconds tick past
Waiting for their country to blast
The rich and poor
Count every hour
While those in between
Respect what it means to
The resilient, the defiant
The loyal the reliant,
The faithful and true
The green and the blue
The God fearing and God sneering
Their doubts re-appearing
The wise and the mental
The real and sentimental
The fat, thin and tall
The narrow, weak and small

I wouldn't shef any tears were Hinkel, McManus, Naylor(flag out every window), nakamura, mcgeady, hartley, VoH and Samaras all to leave this summer....some I think might be worth keeping for another season ( hinkel, naka, mcgeady and Samaras), but if they go I'm not bothered.

They all go on about the 'spirit' in the squad, the 'mental strength', the 'winning mentality'....they all talk a good game, but too often, they've all come up short on the park. Too many points were squandered, and even when rangers threw it back at us again last week, we could hardly get a shot on target at easter road...was it 1 shot on target ?

Easter Road was the time for our squad to get their act together, dig deep, get out their and score a couuple of goals against hibs, and the championship would be ours to throw away on the last day...they went down with a left easter road with a goalie who hardly knew he'd been in a game.

We're only a whisker behind rangers, as the title shows, but we need major surgery. We need some big players in, players that throw their weight around and expect to win. A bit more arrogance and belief. Look at Sutton and Hartson...they both had ability...but they were both big, big characters too.

Do we have anyone like that in our squad ? Caldwell and McDonald...Brown and O'Dea have the makings of it.
Hinkel is very modest, very technical, very dispassionate, actually a very good player if you ask me...I just want him to start getting a bit angry , let opponents know he's there a bit more...when he gets the chance and he thinks he'll get away with it, go right through the ball and put someone right up in the air....and then slag him off later when the refs out of ear shot.

We need a bit more spirit, drive, ruthlessness. There is a kind of technical blandness that often infects our play...like a chess game...the passions are pushed to the side.

I don't want us roaring around like a bunch of numpties...I just want teams to fear us...I want

aaahhhhh what's the point....the question that troubles me is , does strachan feel uncomfortable with big characters in the dressing room ?

Why would WGS feel uncomfortable?

He's dealt comfortably with Roy Keane and Lenny and Hartson and Boruc - bigger characters in the game it's hard to find.

The rumours that strachan didnt want to sign keane are deafening...I've heard it from so many sources that desmond himself insisted that the deal would go through.

Sutton left in a bit of a huff...I don't think there was a great deal of warmth there. Hartson I think is a big character, but quite easy to handle for a manager...he's uncomplicated...100% heart and committment, every time of asking. You get loyalty all the way through with john hartson.

Lennon...I think lennon would've walked to glasgow in his underpants for Celtic regardless of who was in charge. Like hartson, you didn't need to ask for him to put his crown jewels on the line for the club....every managers dream.

Mabey there's nothing in it...mabey I've got it all wrong...but I'm looking at our team and I'm thinking we're short on 'bawz'.

I don't disagree that we have lesser players than MON's team.

But consider this;

MON bought a team of mature seasoned professionals. Most if not all were over 25.

WGS hasn't signed many players over 25 unless they were on frees or bargains. He didn't go and buy someone like Sutton for example - ie a £10m player in his peak.

This is a younger team and we have a younger team again coming through in the reserves (8 in a row they've won)

I agree when one looks around the side we seem a bit "lightweight" ie...Naka, Aiden, Shaun, Broon, Hartley, etc...we do need beefing up - that's why I'd Bamba and Jones from Hibs.

But bawz as you put it, does not come in physical size but in heart and bottle. I think all our players pretty much have a will to win and bottle - think of Aiden taking the pen v Rangers in the CIS or Naka stepping up v Man Utd, or McD v Rangers or Robson v Rangers or Hartley v anyone...these guys are gritty. Even Naylor has bottle - though is technically poor.

I grant you Hinkel is like Agathe - a good player but doesn't want to make an enemy on the park and plays the corinthian way. I don't actually rate the guy that highly and he can go anytime for me.

Who would you sign to give us "bawz"?

Talking of big characters -

What about Graveson? Balde? Dublin?

You can say WGS can't handle these guys but in fact he did and has and is still handling the likes of Boruc...and Aiden.

I think WGS is vastly underrated by everyone and Scotland and it will probably take him to leave and succeed elsewhere before he's truly appreciated - a bit like Big Eck.

Who would I sign ?

The black guy at Dundee U who frequently shows our midfield a clean pair of heels before making some very tidy passes that have our defence on panic stations...can't recall his name...I think DU have two black guys...the one I mean is the more beefy of the two, he's got good pace , aggression, and confident on the ball. I think he wold go well alongside Brown...they are both capable of driving forward...one goes, one sits...whichever one 'goes', we'll be pushing the opponents back and asking all manner of questions which they'll have a nano second to think about...I actually think he could be better than brown...ours for £1.5m methinks...I seem to recall that he's a graduate of monaco's youth academy.

More to follow....(thinkin')

Why do ICT go down?

Let me tell you.

Because they lost too many games.

That's your key, not to lose them.

Some posters don't seem to know the game

Do you remember that he subbed lennon during his last game for Celtic....it was , I felt at the time, a weird decision. There was a strangeness about it...it spoiled lennon's day...it was , I thought, a cruel thing to do. There was no obvious need to do it...he was his captain, it was his last game...at best, highly unusual, I would have thought, highly unusual.

The wee wind up won't draw me in.

My nerves are focused on the game today.

Dailly must play to get his medal, but I would suspect he will come on circa. 65 mins.

BF will start, and I predict he will be captain and bounce the ball coming out of the tunnel (in the old style).

Lafferty will not start. Novo and Miller to sow up byH-T.

If I recall he took Lenny off and Lenny was upset...but we went on to win the game.

Was it cruel for David Hay to substitute Tommy Burns in the centenary cup final in 1985 when McGarvey scored the winner? Burns was livid at them time, he was one Celtic's main players, a guy who could win you a game - yet Hay took him off because he felt Burns was not having the greatest game. But we won the cup.

Fastforward to 2007 Cup final and Lenny's substitution - WGS brought Caldwell on to shore it up, to make sure, to allow no room for sentiment or complacency. We won the cup and Lenny retunrned to join the backroom staff - so he held no grudges.

WGS is a fine manager and he will get even better.

Whatever happens tomorrow, I just hope Rangers or Celtic don't win the title by default. I don't want to see Kenny Miller diving for a penalty or Boyd barging a defender to the ground to gain a shooting opportunity. I just hope it's decided by fair not foul means.

Yes the black guy for Utd I think is Baubin, the less beefy player is Gomis. But Baubin is the stronger of the two. He'd be useful - I'd prefer Bamba of Hibs - he's a collosus as is Rob Jones. We'd get the two of them for £3m.

Heard Simon Cox of Swindon is on the way, for 2 million - good player still got a bit to go though.

McManus for rob jones in a heart beat...jones doesn't take prisoners , mcmanus offers them tea...I think mcmanus is simply too nice a bloke to be quite honest.
Jones is a big killer, no conscience...he'd get kicked out the SAS for cruelty....let's get the big man hooped.

He's not the quickest but he loses nothing in the air - which is where a lot of teams attack us.

He can also score a goal or two. He'd be a stan varga mark 2.

Tim (long overdue IMHO) we give the captaincy to Caldwell...Jones is a battering ram, Caldwell will be there to shore up...what a solid pairing...two rocks of gibraltar...all's we need noo's a left back an' a right back...f.s.

Agreed Caldwell/Jones would be good.

Left back is a funny one - I don't know many good ones and many available ones. Similarly right backs. All we want really is two steady hard tackling full backs nothing more. If we can get good full backs who can also play a bit that'll be a bonus.

We also badly need a striker - a scoring machine.

The Kids Are Alright,

When we have a season where Caldwell gets player of the year, we have to take a step back and look at our game.

Results?

Celtic will beat Hearts.

Rangers will (just) beat DU.

There will be sweat, there will be other things.

But, Rangers will take the title.

When was the last time Celtic had one of them.
