Hearts boss Frail delights at Elliot brace but asks for fans' patience

HEARTS coach Stephen Frail today hailed two-goal Calum Elliot – then urged supporters to give his new partnership with Christian Nade time to develop.
The 20-year-old striker has come in for criticism from his own fans this season but showed just what he is capable of with a double against Craig Brewster's Inverness side on Saturday.

The young Scotland star hit the back of the net twice, despite being forced to take a pain-killing injection before kick-off as the result of a rib injury, while strike partner Nade was struggling with a pelvis problem.

Despite signs that the much-maligned Elliot and Nade pairing could yet pay off for the Jambos though, Frail insisted that it is still too early to judge the duo and said: "It's early. They've played three games together and we've won two. It's something for us to work on. The two of them are clever enough and there is an understanding there. Hopefully the loss of Velicka will not be felt that badly.

"Nade is really struggling with a pelvis injury at the minute, Calum took an injection an hour and a half before kick-off for this rib injury he has. So it was a great performance from them under the circumstances.

"Elliot and Nade are quite clever. The way Calum has been coached is all down to the coaches at Hearts' academy. I'm not taking any credit for it, it's down to people like John Murray and John McGlynn. You can see Christian has been coached that way as well. They don't make the same runs, they try to do opposite things from each other and it'll help Calum having someone like Christian up there to hold the ball."

And Frail was delighted to see Elliot fire home his first goals for the club since September, adding: "He led the line for about 16 or 17 games a year or so back on his own. He showed then he was a good player and he didn't become a bad player overnight. He was an integral part of the Scotland team that went to the final of the Under-19 European Championships and was great in that tournament. What he maybe lacks is just that tiny bit of pace but his vision and cleverness bring other people into the game."

Meanwhile Frail was expecting Jose Goncalves to report for training today after returning to Portugal at the end of last week.

The defender is believed to have flown home when he was told that he would not be included in the squad for the Inverness game.

Frail added: "It's an internal matter, something I wasn't going to accept after the game on Wednesday. I've spoken to Jose, he accepts he was wrong. As far as we're concerned, that's the end of the matter. Jose will be back in on Monday morning for work."

Well we've all had a slice of humble pie after that result - served by Calum Eliot!

What a great tonic after the terrible midweek thumping by Rangers - even a Celtic mate of mine said - " not many teams go to Inverness and win 3-0" Brings back memories of the Burley era which we've seldom glimpsed this season!

In the first half of the season we played well against the old firm and took a few points off them. But we lost to all the dross in the league. Now at least we have been beating the dross like hibs, motherwell, inverness in our recent games. 2 steps forward 1 step back. Frail has steadied the ship and I'm sure he will have until the end of the season. We've played most of this season without our two best players (kingston and Pinilla) so I'll give Frail a break for now.

I said earlier that Elliot deserves credit for his two goals on Saturday, but it will take more, a lot more than that to convince me of his "ability".
Sgaggy wants us to be patient!! I've been waiting for two years to see something from Elliot.
The facts are , Elliot is in a privelidged position, because of the shortage of quality at the club right now.
On an aside...There are distinct pointers to flaws in the mental health of one of the previous posters.

Mixu,

Of course them playing badly had nothing to do with us playing well and not allowing them to play well did it?! Nobody is saying we're back - we're going to win every game, we're a great team. What we're saying is it was an vastly improved performance from Wednesday. I find it unlikely that you'll take any of this on board though as you never actually respond to any points made on this board - you just roll out the usual dross. In fact i'm not even sure why i'm replying to you but it's Monday and i'm still feeling rough from the weekend so it breaks up my working day a bit! I await your usual dross ha ha ha etc

One swallow doesn't make a summer so let's not get too carried away. We played against one of the so called lesser opponents in the SPL who were dis-jointed and unable to defend their goal. We have 2 weeks to put a consistant plan together in order to push into the top 6 or should we just be happy to play at our present level in the bottom 6 enjoying the rest of the season which has to be another write-off in the eyes of Hearts fans?

The only thing I want to say about Calum today is 'Well done son, you did Hearts proud!'.

I have complained before about his inclusion in the team when his confidence is so low... but i'm glad he grabbed a couple goals to prove to his detracters that he can in fact do the business. It's a shame he didn't put the header away too... a hatrick would've been thoroughly deserved!

Nade and Elliot looked a good partnership at the weekend and Inverness at home is a tough game. All credit to Frail and co for a good bounce back from the midweek debacle. I hope the lads can take this result into the forthcoming games and climb up the table.

Also well done Frail for disciplining Jose... he needs to be put in his place the prima dona that he is... keep Wallace at LB, much better!
30

THE BPRENTICE,

03/03/2008 13:07:36
....I'm thinking
St Mirren away = 3points for the JTs
[sorry to Gus the George Bush look-a-likey]

Falkirk away = 3points for the JTs
[sorry yogi]

Dundee Utd home = 3points for the JTs
[sorry big Craig]

Killie away = 3points for the JTs
[sorry JJ]

So, I think 12 points would put us up in with Well, Hobos and Utd.....giving us 48 at the split?

I know that sounds like I'm on fantasy island (and maybe I am?) but look at the fixtures of the others:

Well:
hobos(away) - draw?
tic(home) - defeat?
utd(away) - draw?
hobos(home) - draw?
tic(away) - defeat?

....maybe 3pts....giving them 49 at the split?

Hobos:
well(home) - draw?
killie(home) - draw?
gers(away) - defeat?
well(away)- draw?
saints(home) - win?

....maybe 6pts....giving them 47 at the split?

UTD:
gretna(away) - win?
tic(away) - defeat?
well(home) - draw?
JTs(away) - defeat?
gers(home) - defeat?

....maybe 4pts....giving them 46 at the split?

If all four teams end up as close come the split - I'm sure they will all be scratching each others eyes out for third spot!!

A bit quieter in here today, wonder why?
Anyway glad that Calum proved what I've known all along, he has the quality now he needs the belief.
Indeed one game with a couple of goals wont cut it for the next 2 years, but this guy has had so little time to prove himself despite the protestations of some of how long they'v waited.
He's been in and out of the team, without ever getting a run.
Once again Shaggy is right to urge patience, understandings dont come overnight. I'm glad Nade turned in a good show as well, reservations are still as much there with him as much as Elliot, 3 years older, more experienced and on far higher wages(I guess) he seems to have got off lightly compared to young Elliot.
Time will tell but if these guys are to prove themselves, either individually or as a partnership, we dont have many options any longer, then Hearts supporters have to be fair.
Fair play to Vic for eating some humble pie, I cant help thinking though, its not only quieter in here today because Hibs fans are showing their shyness to come out when roles are reversed, but Elliot bashers dont have anyone to bash today, and that sickens me far more than any garbage a Hibbee chucks at us.
Elliot may be no superstar but he's more than talented enough to play for Hearts, and has a football brain way in excess of many of his detractors on this forum.
Calum thats another tenner your due me chum!

wishfull thinking mate. You honeslty dont think Hibs will win any of those games. It must be strange seeing the world in that strange tint of maroon which you do.
46

Chas Niceass,

03/03/2008 14:01:13
#44 Big Rob, it may be wishful thinking but outside of 2 heavy OF defeats, Hearts look capable of shutting out the rest, if you look at our other 5 results.
Its not that long ago Hibs went on the worst run in the SPL this season, though they seem to have addressed that slide, its possible given an injury or 2, especially up front, it could go wrong again, just as it could for any of 9 clubs in the SPL (its all gone wrong for Gretna long time ago).
47

GrahamL,

03/03/2008 14:03:01
Much as it pains me to agree with the Hibees here, I don't see us catching them in the next few games. If we can hold it together (and that is a huge, shadow-casting, if) then we can drag ourselves into the top 6 and close the gap on Hibs, but we're not going to go past them.

Not before the split anyway...
48

THE BPRENTICE,

03/03/2008 14:06:07
44 Big Rob - you could be right, going on current form for both edinburgh teams - you'd expect more derbies after the split, anyway. Bring it on.

50

Chas Niceass,

03/03/2008 14:06:46
#48 How do Lenny, thought you guys did well first half Sat, through boozy eyes and a stuttering Setanta picture.
It is wishful thinking but like I say in #49, small things can change the path, best not to get over confident in this league, check your progress to October then the slide, I'm sure that had something to do with Fletchers absence and his current form, other factors also, but IF that happened again. Its possible, but its also possible we will lose somewhere along the line, though return of Kingston and Stewart, dare I even say Pinilla, then things might improve for us even.
All ifs and buts.

Alrighty Chas,

Yeah, good 1st half performance, not so good 2nd. Still, we cant be expected to beat Celtic every time : )

I would say our terrible period earlier in the season was more down to Collins losing the plot, playing players out of position, now paying certain players for personal reasons etc. I'm much more confident under big Mixu.

#20 I think 5 wins from 7 matches is more than " one swallow" Mike!

We know it's been a poor season, but at least we have some decent performances compared with last year - 4-2 vrs Rangers, 4-1 vrs Aberdeen and 3-0 at ICT in the league plus a great CIS cup win 2-0 at Celtic Park! Just goes to show that with a decent mangement structure in place and some consistency then we could be much further up the table!

MON THE HEARTS!

#89 Thats fair comment, pretty much my sentiments.

Vic, I might argue for Calum but not much for Ivaskevicius. I did think he played well though in a brief period around September time. I think he is quite limited probably quite effective trying to stop a team in an away tie I'd think. Caused Rangers some problems earlier this season and Celtic last year too, but I dont reckon he'd improve the team long term, I genuinely believe Calum can, I thought Ms Niceass was pulling my plonker when she told me he'd added a 2nd, as I scrambled for my earphones.

#90 Hey we're just looking on the bright side as we've had a very poor season! Ok, nobody is saying we've had a good season, but the ICT result was a real tonic and we've won 5 out of our last 7 league matches - and yes that does include our first ever victory over Gretna in normal time and eerrmm a derby win against your lot if I'm not mistaken!

#91 I was cheering like mad too in a pub full of Arsenal and Man U fans who could understand why I was enjoying the Skysports news so much and cheering out of sync!

I think that nearly every side in the SPL would be delighted with a 3-0 victory at ICT - tough place to go!
88

I also cheered like mad when Bednar scored again - he is still a Jambo after all!

89

Chas Niceass,

#96 Yep, even under Burley we never got that kind of result up there, credit where its due this week.
Think some of the comments last week were OTT and hysterical, but I can understand why, confidence and morale does forever seem to be fragile.
Things were never as good as we thought they were and by the same token, they aren't anywhere near as bad as some would like to make out.
If Romanov went they'd find a new target, for my money Romanov has bigger fish to fry than Hearts, failing with Hearts wont aid him at all.
Not many Hibs fans on today, just the decent ones.

late charge for 4th aye they light brigade tried that and got slaughtered may make top six no chance of 4th out cups season over now thats a fact jack well 48 points they already have 45 with 6 games to play as i hibby even i dont believe that even though i wish you were right but its a stunner hearts 48 points that means they are going to win their next four games even vlad the impaler would nt come out with p1sh like that
103

Hearts have won their last 5 games against non old firm without losing a goal, so why can't they win last 4 Have you seen Motherwell's programme. Hibs twice, Rangers Celtic an away game against Dundee United. I can see them getting two points from that. Ok predictions rarely work out as planned I know but I believe 12 points is a possibility, but no way a certainty.

With Elliot getting ALL the attention - nothing said of Karipidis who cracked the game with a good header at a set piece and for a player who himself was persona non grata not that long ago, I think Christos (Hristos)deserves a lot more kudos and the £200k paid for him is looking like money well spent.

But now its time to take a Wakners wager and spend time watching stottsport with John (the voice of sense) Colquhoun ...but oh no, just when you thought it was safe you get Gerry McNee - wasn't he one of those knights that said nee?
134

LyonHearts,

le teil 04/03/2008 07:16:27
All this talk of 3rd or 4th is premature! I think Hearts should just concetrate on getting back into the top 6 and money spinning matches against the OF! Ask any Formula 1 racing driver and they'll tell you that the way to claw back is to think of one place at a time - we are currently 7th so the next target is Falkirk in 6th - and we should think no further than that!

The split should be very competitive as no-one can expect easy games with the Ugly Sisters bashing each other for the championship! Another derby vrs the Hobos to decided local bragging rights and maybe some good matches to decide the last UEFA spot! So all told I think there is plenty of motivation to get into that top 6 before the split!
