THE London Olympics are bringing "golden opportunities" to local firms, a meeting in Edinburgh heard today.
John Armitt, the chair of the Olympic Delivery Agency (ODA), told businessmen and women at Murrayfield about the help small and medium-sized firms here can get bidding for contracts.

The ODA is the public body responsible for developing and buildi
ng the venues and infrastructure for the 2012 Games.

"We want to help Scottish businesses make the most of the golden opportunities that are available," Mr Armitt said.

"Companies of all sizes from different sectors across the country have already won work directly with the ODA."

He urged companies to sign up for CompeteFor, a service linking companies working towards London 2012.

Mr Armitt said: "While we still have contracts left to place, the bulk of opportunities are now through our contractors and the supply chain."

Crawford Gillies, the chair of Scottish Enterprise, said more than 1,500 firms in Scotland had already signed up with CompeteFor.

"To boost this number we have to make companies aware that they have to be in it to win it."

Mr Gillies argued that Olympic contracts can "secure valuable business, stimulate job creation and help increase sustainable economic growth".

He added: "Contracts for 2012 Games-related goods and services truly are economic gold and could go on to provide further opportunities with the forthcoming Commonwealth Games."

What an enormous waste of money, all the olympic committee members are on £600,000+ per annum, more labour nepotism and the budget has been altered upwards twice already, the security cost projections are underfunded by almost £1 billion,as usual we are stuck funding another labour white elephant.

Seriously these people are deluded. I went to one of these seminars on behalf of the company I represent which was held in Glasgow at huge tax-payer expense and a glossy TV "celebrity" hosting. It was a room full of bloated MP's and ex-athletes collectively patting each other on the back on their "achievements" but very little evidence of anything to actually deliver other than CGI of how the Olympics will look (subject to change of course)

Half way through there was a Q&A where the ODA chief revealed that the Olympic committee members were not obliged to use "CompeteFor" and that the majority of our work would come direct from utility companies.

As if that wasn't a total waste of a day, then they told us there was carbon copy site set up (again at tax payer expense) that didn't share any info from London for the Glasgow 2014 bid!!

Local business benefitting?? Don't think so. Yes you have to be in it to win it but I was one of the earliest adopters of this system and haven't had one notification matching the business profile, despite assistance from SCDI.

In the words of Nan from Catherine Tate - "What a f---ing liberty!"

Andy pandy,

i am surprised that an obviously intelligent old dog like yourself would get drawn into legitimising these people with your presence. Same old waste of taxpayers money as the people in the know collect the brown envelopes.

#4 Brian you're right. I thought maybe I could have found a way to get my grubby hands on a brown envelope but alas - no. And the finger buffet was rotten as was the coffee. Obviously that's where the budget ran out after paying for Mr.Coe and co.
