I, a Scot, was also at the 17th tee at Winged Foot when Monty through the tee - I was directly behind the tee. Now, I am not an apologist for Monty but 2 things:1) I did not see any child in the area that he threw the tee. From what I could tell, he was throwing in the general direction of an adult, who had moved as Monty addressed his drive.2) I did not here anyone say, "that is why you do not get our (the US fans) support." Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised how popular Monty was. I would say that he was, Mickelson aside, definitely the most popular of the contenters for the title - the cheers at the 17th green when he held the putt, may well be the reason why Mickelson bogeyed 16!
Overall I did feel disappointed that he reacted in the way he did, but get your facts right before you stick the boot in!
A very disappointing article - the writer clearly has an axe to grind where Monty is concerned, and clearly feels no need to corroborate the facts before sticking the knife in.
I'm not a Monty apologist, he is a fine golfer with some "unfortunate" character traits. But I wasn't there, I can't say what happened, and there are conflicting reports all round. As Mr Huggan did not witness the events first hand, he is clearly choosing to believe what he wants to believe. Good journalism? You decide.
