Real men don't need tees. Stroll up to the first hole and plonk down your half drunk bottle of Belhaven 80 shilling to fire away with a No 2 Tiger. I'd then play a 3 iron from the fairway into the sand trap and finish off with a backspin weedgie. Birdies all round.

on a more serious note. i wonder where Monty will go down in British golf history...... I'm sure he will not win a major in his career, not now. I would have loved him to have a few years back but now I just see a big grouchy overly self contemplating guy.

Unfortunately he is a kind of one man Ad. for the fact that the US tour is MUCH more difficult than the european tour. Monty won a lot in Europe but NOTHING in the US. He was never really world #2, a trick of the ratings, with too much credit given to european titles. #4 or 5 at best. A real #2 would have several US tour titles.

He has a great Ryder Cup record, but that is only a bit of fun. Like big breaks in Snooker, only to loose the match over 15 frames.

We measure the greats by majors - 2 is the real cut off, especially these days. You can hold your nerve and be lucky once, twice means you can do it meaningful.

For me the British list has to be:
1.Faldo (6 majors wow!)
2. Jacklin (2 in the Nicklaus era)
3. Cotton (3, beat who he had to in the 30 and 40's)
4. Lyle (2 and some US success)
5= Woosy (1 and a little terrior)
5= Monty (Mr European consistency and our nearly man)

All time golfing greats.... sorry but he will not feature top 25!

He played well at last year's San Antay. Mebbe he should wear a lurid yellow check patern and blend more with the spectators. Nicklaus scored a 3 on his last hole.

If you were to spend 3 hours with Montgomery, you would know everything about him - and he would know absolutely nothing about you, MARTIN !! He wouldn't ask you about yourself, because the only thing that matters to Monty is HIM.

He is arrogant and completely self-consumed. He is an embarrasment to Scots everywhere (a big Jessie) and the sooner he realises that, only then will he perhaps grow up.

I would be delighted to see him do well, quite simply because of his Scottish label. But whilst he is so far up his own jaxi, he will never see the Woods for the trees (gerrit?).

Speaking to us from Saint Andrews big Jack said, "We're only entertainers." Hit's a flying circus with a moody python act.

THE SILVER CROC,

At the "snappy" billabong of plenty - drinking.... 17/06/2007 09:27:08

For all the dosh he seems to have accumulated, this big-headed self-obsessed pillock is a choker, a loser.

He's not even snappy, nor a "genuine" Scot.

9

Eddie,

No 6 -
He'd get on well with Sean Connery, then!

PJ Walker,

and Rod Stewart...... Monty moved to Yorkshire when he was four years old. All that growing up mastering the wind at Royal Troon is romantic clap trap. He played for Yorkshire as an amateur, before going to college in Texas. In spite of this and his Yorkshire accent, he still sees himself as a patriotic Scot.

As a golfer, he will be remembered as being slightly better than Peter Oosterhuis, though he does't have any of Oosty's natural charm. Shame really.

Paul Voltaire,

Monty had the game.
He just wasn't game for it himself.

But some of us just ARE driven, obsessed, moody.

He should be OK on the Seniors tour if he can mellow with age.

I said the other day he should not have sacked his caddy as it not him who is playing the shots. The guy`s had it now and last year he missed his big chance. What he did then was unthinkable.I still think it was a dream ,god knows what he must think.Time to potter about till he`s 50 and can get on the Senior Tour.
As for comment 3 I fully agree with your top 5 British golfers. As far as records go it`s that order for me too.Pity Sandy doesn`t get the full recognition he deserves. He was for a few years a far better player than Monty and I`d bet Monty would trade his European Order of Merits for Sandy`s 2 Majors.

A typical back biting article by Tom English. At the first opportunity he get his "irish connection" in the story and somehows stabs people in the back. If he is so bitter about Monty, and Scotland, then maybe he should b****r off and write about hurling.

It's an easy time to give Monty a rough ride and Tom English has taken it to new limits. A school yard bully hiding behind his typewriter.

We know Monty's a pain in the arse but that's why we love him or hate him. If Tom English understands anything about the Scots it's our ability to see both sides of the coin. But then again he's Irish and b**lsh*t is commonplace to him.

Will we ever see him giving Harrington or McGinley a hard time? I bet your life we won't because giving his countrymen a hard time is not in his nature. Its easier to do things overseas!

An insecure and bitter man? Oh yes!!

Great, brave article which has been long everdue in its objective critique of this particular golfer.
Amazed that there are still those who "Don't get it!".

Why do the Scottish media and press always say that this is Monty year the man will never ever won a major, he is not good enough, he can,t even won the British in his own country "SCOTLAND" even at his own golf course Royal Troon were he learned to play golf.
He is not a very well like person in the golf circles especially with the press and the public and he is a very dour man no personality.

I wish he would shut up and get on with it , how many people in the world who plays this magnificent game would trade all they have to do what he does every weekend ? Look at Ben Hogan the man was practically a cripple did you here him complain NO , he just got on with it, and look what he acheived. I apologise to the late Mr Hogan , Fat mummy's boy shouldnt even be on the same page. Anyway enough is enough just dont write about him and he will go away. Bring on the final round today , at least we wont see any cry baby,s.

you people on this board are a disgrace as is the reporter monty is 43 and just is not as consistent as he once was and just hates playing badly because he is a player motivated by winning which is more than can be said for the usual european 'major contenders' donald, garcia, stenson, westwood who play badly and seem almost happy and are always 'taking the positives' but in the last two years monty has been second twice because he addresses when he is struggling and makes changes and is honest and does'nt spu some rubbish from a mental coach like the others monty just has high standards and is driven by winning which he is a whole lot better at most than so you should all stop overeacting and picking at the easy target because monty shows his emotions.

the_big_kev,

Monty has won nothing in the US, that pretty much say's it all. only Monty and a few hacks remember the second place guy.
I'm not sure what the future holds but I can see him staying the course until 47-48 and then turning up for some easy money on the european seniors tour.

not having won a major means that he'll soon need to start qualifying for majors and I can't see Mr Mont. lowering himself to do that - just don't give him a TV job!! I already know all about him!

21

gb1985,

17/06/2007 17:12:58

too many before like you lot have written monty off and every time he has come back because he just loves competing and hates losing and it will be intresting too see in 10 years time the people who shoot 80 too miss a cut in a major and smile and say bad luck or whatever and just turn up doing the same thing next time end up with over 30 career wins monty will be back there is no doubt about that and you will still probably say he is finished then or it is his 3rd last hurrah.

22

Tricia,

17/06/2007 21:20:51

Monty needs to visit a psychiatrist or sex theapist to solve his putter problems. He's apparently too bothered to play well. The fault dear Monty, lies within. It's not in your long term or short-lived caddies.

I dont beleive TSN ( sports network in america ) cuts its program because Tiger Woods didnt win. I watched the program for 7 hours and wanted to see the winner A Carbrerra pick up the US Open Trophey and listen to a hard working class Pro winning speech. But No USA doesnt like it , shows you how they are nothing but idiots. well done A Carbrera all the power too you. Hope to see you at THE OPEN at Carnoustie in July.
P.S. This is the only Championship in golf.

The British open in Scotland is the Best ever

25

Dekester,

Canada's westcoast 18/06/2007 02:00:37

Have you ever played Carnoustie? I have, and grew up a few miles from there.

It is an awesome course, but like most British links courses,if the wind doesn't blow it is relatively straightforward.

Oakmont, nearly perfect weather. Rain to soften the course at the start of the tourney. No wind to speak of, and just look at those scores.

The US open is year over year a tougher win.

Dod fae Aiberdeen,

Deep rough....... 18/06/2007 07:46:17

Monty is a sad, pathetic individual and as stated, an embarrasment. His continual big bairn face and demeanour is tiresome and he is running out of supporters, methinnks. Unless he lightens up, he'll bomb on the Seniors Tour, where guys seem a bit happier to be there.

Unfortunately, we'll have the same rigmarole at Carnoustie with His Royal Torn Faced-ness, so we can all look forward to that. Hmmm.....
