Miller was booked and received an angry reaction from Potter after he threw himself to the ground when taking on Cuthbert just inside the box.
St Mirren were seeing more of the ball but could not find a way through and Aberdeen substitute Jeffrey de Visscher forced Howard to dive low to save his shot on the break.
The hosts eventually created one half chance with seven minutes left when the ball broke kindly for Dorman 18 yards out, but his low strike lacked power and was easily held.
St Mirren paid the price for missed chances and sloppy defending as Darren Mackie's sucker punch earned Aberdeen their second away win of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season.
Billy Mehmet went from saint to sinner following his midweek hat-trick against Dumbarton when he missed two glorious chances as St Mirren dominated the opening half.
Centre-backs Will Haining and John Potter both slipped up to set up Mackie to fire home two minutes before the break.
