Aberdeen 1 Hibernian 2: Riordan double piles pressure on Calderwood

Published Date: 05 October 2008
IN THE game of managerial hangman playing out with Aberdeen's Jimmy Calderwood, yesterday's defeat might prove the equivalent of the rope being drawn on to the gallows sketched following previous home defeats.
The loss to Hibs wasn't as horrible as the reverses against Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hamilton Accies, but that is wholly irrelevant. Aberdeen are now second-bottom of the league and have lost five matches in a row for the first time since the Steve Paterson era.

If anything, the manner in which they were condemned to a 2-1 defeat 12 minutes from time on a day they warranted reward seemed to demonstrate that they are a team powerless to escape a sorry fate.

With the game tied at 1-1, and after dominating for long spells of the second period, the home side invited disaster by allowing Colin Nish to try a low drive from long range. Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield stepped up to block but Derek Riordan was first to the rebound. His effort struck team-mate Steven Fletcher who was in an offside position on the goalline. His touch caused the ball to strike Charlie Mulgrew's hand but no official spotted that Langfield was in front of his defender, leading referee Mike McCurry to issue a red card and award a penalty coverted by Derek Riordan. It supplied the striker with his second gifted goal of the afternoon, following a dreadful mistake by Lee Mair for his opener.

"We didn't deserve to lose but that is the phase we are in," Calderwood said. "We absolutely dominated. We could have played better but the boys gave everything and I think supporters appreciated that. You could see that they were disappointed, but the reaction was worse after earlier defeats."

There were aimless jeers at the end, but no calls for Calderwood's neck. Yet, those who claim to be in the know about the fretting of the Aberdeen board maintain the Pittodrie club's games at the minute are all about either slowing up the manager's demise, or accelerating it. After four years in which he has returned respectability to the club's league status with consistent top-half-of-the-table finishes and presided over domestic cup losses to Queen's Park, Queen of the South and Dundee United, and, the other week, Kilmarnock, Calderwood now finds himself in a precarious position. And this just six months after he signed a new three-year deal that would necessitate hefty compensation should he be shown the door.

The theory goes that, as the Aberdeen punters fail to be won over by Calderwood – and won't ever be – after no wins from five home games they are preparing to desert Pittodrie in their droves. Cue the most ruthless remedial action sooner rather than later to prevent a gate receipt crunch; irrespective of Calderwood's league record, and a post-Christmas UEFA Cup run last season.

Aberdeen's predicament makes the travails of Mixu Paatelainen's Hibs team appear small fry. The Finn had enough faith in his men's attacking prowess to send out Riordan, Nish and Fletcher as a three-man strikeforce. Riordan's return has brightened up Hibs and the striker was delighted to win his first man of the match award, he said, for "ages, since I don't know how long ago. And you can't go wrong with that". His efforts prompted him to kiss the badge. Or, as he put it with a new take on an old football cliche, "the only badge I would kiss". Riordan opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after Mair was guilty of an appalling error of judgment. Hustled remorselessly by Fletcher – unfairly the Aberdeen man erroneously felt – Mair half-hit a passback that was collected by Riordan, who sashayed past Langfield and deposited the ball into the net.

Until that point both teams had traded shooting chances, with Hibs keeper Yves Ma-Kalamby thwarting Richard Foster, Darren Mackie and Lee Miller. The Belgian was only eventually beaten from a penalty, Miller executing a spot kick with utter conviction after he had been bulldozed in the box by Sol Bamba four minutes from the interval.

Aberdeen strained every sinew in search of a second goal during a second half that belonged to them until Riordan's penalty. Thereafter, it was as if all hope deserted them. Their followers would have understood that feeling.

MAN OF THE MATCH

He did so in such grandiose fashion that it was plain obvious he was exaggerating their degree of difficulty, but Yves Ma-Kalamby made enough good saves to consider he had a telling impact on the outcome.

QUICK FACT

Hibs had won just three away games across the whole of 2008 before yesterday's victory.

TALKING POINT

Is there any issue at Aberdeen other than the diminishing career prospects of manager Jimmy Calderwood? His team need to start winning sharpish, and follow it up with more of the same, if his position isn't to become untenable very shortly.

Och, its a bit daft that the headline story is closed for comment but the next one down is.

Aberdeen were a bit fortunate to get a point at home to Rangers, and have been less fortunate ever since.

Celtc had a good home win today too, but we aren't supposed to comment on that.

If anyone is in doubt about Calderwoods lack of talent take a look at the next Scotland squad. Not a single player who owes his career to Calderwood either at Aberdeen or from his time at Dunfermline in the squad. Yet half a dozen owe their career to Mobray and a similar amount to Jefferies. A club like Aberdeen have to develop talent to survive and to prosper, and Calderwood and his coaches are not up to the job. Add to that the teams inconsistency which can only be down to poor team spirit and you see he has to go. And all that's without the dreadful PR skills. He's improved a bit recently in his 'I'm doing you a big favour managing your club' attitude, but it's too little too late. He's not a dreadful manager, we've had worse, but it's a question of when, not if he goes.

Wullie67,

And while I'm at it, all Aberdeen supporters must now baton down the hatches in preparation for the Glasgow media attack.
The supporters 'expectations' will be brought up once again.
So number 1. There is not a single Aberdeen supporter anywhere in the world who expects to win the Champions League.
2. There is not an Aberdeen supporter anywhere in the world who expects to win the league.
3. There is not an Aberdeen supporter anywhere in the world who expects the glory days of the eighties to return.
We'd all like them to happen, but none of us expect it. We do however expect our team to regularly be able to beat teams with budgets significantly smaller than ours. Like Kilmarnock, Hamilton, QOS. Otherwise the manager has to go.

Decent away form from hibs. More to come surely. Chance to kill this game today- fletcher will come good. The prodigal son has delivered as promised so far- already winning 6 points. Anything can happen next 2 games but 3 points would be good from both.
How will Mixu set up against hearts? Yantorno has to feature surely?

Private Pike,

I've just watched the whole game on the new Gaelic Sky channel ALBA. I listened to that bizare radio commentary yesterday and would not have recognised the game.

A couple of comments from the guy. "Thicot, who did nothing in the game". Jones and Bamba...slow.

Well, Thicot had a very good game, holding the 3 man midfield together. Jones and Bamba have as much pace and any two central defenders in the league.

But side issues really because it was brilliant seing the defence playing together as a unit again. And was it a coincidence that Maka plays his best game of the season when he has a defence he can have confidence in?

No one going missing at vital times? Jones, knowing he has a partner that he can trust? Murray at left back again but stll had a very good game. Van Zanten, more relaxed but got turned a couple of times by his opponent.

Stevenson worked hard and was strong and was effective. Even Rankin wasn't bad this game but still think Yantorno would make a difference. Fletcher and Nish both moved well when the ball came through to them but both missed good chances so it was as well that DR was there. Geting fitter, getting stronger, getting better every game.

The team is still not right but definitely getting there. The danger of course is that Mixu will bring Keenan and Hogg back into the team and persist with Rankin when Yantorno gives us far more options.

Perhaps instead of giving Calderwood the sack (with the large payoff that goes with it), the board should give him funds to buy a player like Riordan. Aberdeen still seem to believe it is possible to turn water into wine. JC has brought limited success back to Pittodrie and this is better than the shambles we became used to with Stevie Patterson and his predecessors. Let's support him and perhaps encourage our multimillionaire chairman to loosen the purse strings.

So where are all the gunts from swinecastle today ....

With thier ... the league table doesn't lie

yeah thought so gone missing as usual, well for thier information THE LEAGUE TABLE DOESN'T LIE, roll on the Derby

KingKenny,

Now Aberdeen is 11. St Mirren lost some players but They can win Rangers(If Rangeres strikers off shooting and not score). Aberdeen unlucky Hibs game. but Celtic game too. Dons need more, Many Players leave and no chance replace players. I Don't like JC LEAVE. BUT His team keep lose and lose..Aberdeen will search other manager. That is will difficult.

Hibernian back good attack. but That's all. I think Hibs can better team. Mixu not like big squad but I hope more sign defender and Midfielder January Transfer Window.

Gareth Williams(Watford), Stephen Pearson(Derby), James McNulty(Stockport County), Gordon Greer(Doncaster Rovers)

#7 PP Why do you think Mixu would bring back Keenan & Hogg. Were they injured?
Appears(from match reports) that DR signing has changed 2 points into 6 (Hamilton/Aberdeen)...

#9 Derby Day pending...take it after match party arranged.... no chance of an out of form/miss firing Hearts team spoiling the party...is there?
12

Dood,

#11 TOTT

Owch. Never been one to made outlandish Derby Day predictions, never bet on the game, never come on these boards boasting about the "doing" we'll give you. Why? Fingers been burnt before. So, no party planned here.

Yes, Hearts are more than capable of coming to ER and taking the spoils, but I'd say that the ER faithful is possibly not over confident for this one. After some of our performances and Mixu's tactical set ups this season, I'm not fooled that everythings rosy again after yesterdays result (albeit - very good result).

So I'll leave it to the halfwits to start the bragging, I'm sure they'll be on soon.
13

Private Pike,

05/10/2008 09:44:46
TOTT Hogg was ill. Thats the only reason why we played a centre half alongside Jones. As for Keenan. I suspect that if you asked Mixu why he played him he would say that the fans don't see the unseen work that he does.

I hope I'm wrong and that we see neither of them back on any sort of regular basis.

Incidently, that after match party was a bit embarrassing but I would have let the Hearts supporters stay if thats what they wanted to do. I feel better about our prospects of winning the game than I did a couple of weeks ago but you can never tell. I really think that Hibs have better players than Hearts at the moment but that doesn't always count.

Derby Forecast:
Hibs 3 (Nish 1, DR 2) Hearts 1 (Stewart pen)

PP: I am incapable of being objective therefore least said the better!!(but i'll go 1-0 HEARTS!!)
To be honest at the moment we do not carry a goal threat & it might not matter who you play in central defence. Our best bet is to try and take control of the midfield (as no doubt in my mind we have better midfielders). Other than that hope that wee Deek gets lifted on friday night & cannot make the game.

Radge 21,

106 years in a row !! 05/10/2008 10:00:45
Not wanting to cause any controversy, but yesterday I went up to the Lothian region transport offices at Waverly Bridge to renew my bus pass. Derek Riordon was in the queue right behind me. I said Hi Derek what brings you in here.
He said that Hibs had given him £53.00 up front to get a bus pass and were prepared to pay the £35.00 a month standing order payments.
Only condition was that he was to keep it all quiet in case any of the other Hibs players found out and went radge.
He said they had even given him money for a day saver ticket just so he could get there.
They asked him to stand against a wall to get his photograph taken.
A few minutes later a lassie came through from the back office and said "Derek we need a photo of you and not your pet Rat". Derek said that is me ya cheeky bint.
I said never mind them mate, I will take you for a pint but he said he only drinks buckfast in the house nowadays. And said something about saying to bouncers “do you know who I am” not sure what he was on about there.
Said he will now only venture into a pub when hibs win the Scottish cup. He then said do you know anyone who supplies buckfast by the train load.
17

Private Pike,

05/10/2008 10:04:29
I hope you don't believe everything thats said about young Derek. I prefer to believe that "teetotal" Derek is tucked up in bed at home by 9.30pm every night.

All this nonsense from the supporters, the papers, the television the police. They're all wrong.

As for taking control of Hibs midfield. You;d have to find it first.

Apologies if sombody else has suggested it - but there is a very good midfielder playing in Coventry who must be getting sick of the rest he is getting sitting on a bench on Saturday afternoons. He would certainly fit in nicely as a piece in Mixu's jigsaw.
19

Private Pike,

20

Big Red,

Aberdeen 05/10/2008 10:31:19
Well, when you're down, you're down.

Calderwood must be wondering if he walked under half a dozen ladders, smashed a mirror, then booted a black cat.

Aberdeen were much better than a very ordinary Hibs side yet lost because Mair couldn't pass the ball back and because the linesman couldn't spot a player 5 yards offside.
Saying that it's our own fault that we couldn't finish off Hibs when we had the chances.
There are lot of teams in the SPL playing worse than Aberdeen (Hibs are one of them) but hardly any getting as much bad luck.
21

Dan McMichael,

Balerno 05/10/2008 12:04:33
All Hibbies should cherish Deek whilst we have him!

He is our Robbo and if encouraged and handled well could become a club legend in succession to Jimmy Dunn, Harry Ritchie, The 5, Baker, Stanton, Sauzee et al.

If you know yir history!!! (in saying that we'll probably still lose the derby - that's Hibs)
22

hairystovies,

Glasgow 05/10/2008 13:29:58
Face it Dons fans, Calderwood is from the "belt it into the channels" school of football tacticians. You were never going to get attractive, intelligent skillful football from him. His team was always going to be full of hard running workmen with little flair or guile.
Mind you, skilless, brainless hard working runners, instead of skillful intelligent athletes is what Scotland produces these days.

You are absolutely correct that there is an element of evil scumbags that follow Rangers but don't forget there are thousands of reasonable people who just want to support their team.

Also, while maybe not as vociferous, there is a nasty element who follow Celtic. I have just read an article on Nacho Novo which pretty much proves that point.

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11781_4248717,00.html

While I admit that our lot seem the worse of the two there is much work to be done on both sides.

I have no argument with your view. Ive said before the best thing that happened for my kids was for me to move my family away from Lanarkshire to where nobody cared what school you went to.

I have to admit that other than one outing to Ibrox for my daughter I always took my kids to see Motherwell who my son still follows.

I do feel a bit away from it all down here and believe it or not until the last couple of weeks brought the famine song thing into the spotlight I thought the fans were singing something about wanting to go home themselves. Its only now that I realise what they are really singing and it has no place in football.

Re: nacho I know he comes on a bit strong and a little verbal bashing hurts no-one but I didnt realise how bad that stuff had gotten either.

Ps
Another bad one for your local premiership team today. Maybe Hutton is better off injured at the minute.
