THIERRY Gathuessi and Colin Nish saw red as nine-man Hibs UEFA Cup hopes were dented as Aberdeen came from behind to clinch a 2-1 win at Pittodrie.

Mixu Paatelainen's players had gone into the match knowing a win would take them into third place in the SPL table after Euro rivals Motherwell and Dundee United drew in the lunchtime kick-off at Fir Park.

And they looked on course for victory when Northern Ireland star Dean Shiels fired them into an early second half lead with his tenth goal of the season.

But Dons substitute Darren Mackie equalised within 60 seconds of taking to the park before another moment of madness from Gathuessi earned Aberdeen a penalty. Gathuessi, who conceded a needless spot-kick at Tannadice on Sunday to deprive his side of two vital points, committed the exact same blunder pushing Lee Miller in the back when there was no threat, the former Hearts striker stepping up to convert from the spot.

Worse was to come for the French hot head who, having been booked for dissent, continued to talk back to Dougal who produced a second yellow.

And ten minutes from time Nish, who had only been on the pitch some nine minutes after replacing Steven Fletcher , was sent packing by referee Stuart Dougal. Only the official seemed aware of the striker's offence but there was no complaint from Nish as he headed for the tunnel.

Miller passed up a glorious chance to open the scoring for the Dons after only four minutes. Barry Nicholson picked out his team-mate all alone eight yards out with an inch-perfect cross but, instead of heading for goal, Miller nodded the ball across the area where he caught Chris Maguire by surprise, the Pittodrie youngster stabbing his effort wide.

Hibs hit back with Ian Murray releasing Abdessalam Benjelloun who fired in an angled shot which Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield, diving low to his left, just managed to touch away.

Miller almost made amends for his earlier miss when he got his head to a cross from the overlapping Alan Maybury. But while he managed to beat Andy McNeil in the Hibs goal, Rob Jones had got back onto his line to boot the ball clear of danger.

The Dons continued to make most of the early running and Maguire let rip with a powerful drive which sizzled past McNeil's right-hand post. Then Richard Foster charged down Martin Canning's attempted clearance before delivering an inviting ball across the face of goal, forcing Murray to put it behind for a corner which, thankfully for Hibs, came to nothing.

Hibs hadn't posed too much of a threat by John Rankin went close with a left-footed shot from 25 yards which dipped inches over the bar and right on the stroke of half-time a corner from the former Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder caused confusion inside the Dons penalty area before the ball fell for Filipe Morais who dispatched a shot through a forest of legs which was deflected just wide of the target.

Aberdeen again held the upper-hand at the start of the second-half but they were rocked when Hibs took the lead in the 54th minute. Shiels intercepted Zander Diamond's pass and then danced through the Dons defence leaving Sot Severin, Diamond and Maybury trailing in his wake before slotting a low shot into the net for his tenth goal of the season.

For all Aberdeen's possession, McNeil hadn't been overworked but the Hibs goalkeeper was alert to block a snap shot from Nicholson after Miller had knocked a Maybury cross into his path. But Hibs immediately raced to the other end, Benji and Steven Fletcher combining to allow Rankin a run into the Dons penalty area only for Langfield to beat away his shot.

Aberdeen replaced Maguire with Darren Mackie in the 62nd minute and the substitute made an immediate impact, grabbing the equaliser within 60 seconds. Picking up Stuart Duff's pass, he drove at the Hibs defence only to be blocked by Canning whose clearance broke back into the striker's pass allowing him to roll the ball past the helpless McNeil.

Worse was to follow for Hibs when Gathuessi, the villain of the piece at Tannadice last Sunday, gave away another needless penalty, clearly pushing Miller in the back in the 69th minute when he was posing no danger, referee Stuart Dougal immediately pointing to the spot. Miller stepped up to hammer the ball into the net.

Gathuessi compounded his misdemeanour by getting himself sent off two minutes later, booked by Dougal for dissent after being penalised but then continuing to talk back to the official who then branded the red card, leaving the Hibs players raging at his stupidity.

Aberdeen: Langfield, Maybury, Considine, Diamond, Foster, Nicholson, Severin (Touzani 86), Duff (Walker 68), Young, Maguire (Mackie 62), Miller. Subs not used: Soutar, Lovell, Touzani, Bus, De Visscher.

Hibs: McNeil, Gathuessi, Canning, Jones, Murray, Beuzelin, Morais (Donaldson 78), Rankin, Shiels, Benjelloun, Fletcher (Nish 71). Subs not used: Ma-Kalambay, Zarabi, Stevenson, Chisholm, Campbell.

Referee: Stuart Dougal

Gathuessi is a disgrace. 4 points lost in the last 2 weeks and all down to him. Why does Mixu play him and why after his sending off for talking back to the ref did Nish think he could get away with it?

In the past few seasons we have been represented by Dunfermline and Gretna in the EUEFA Cup, neither of whom progressed beyond the early stages. Just as well that Hibs chances of EUFA Cup qualification are diminishing or Scotland's standing in Europe would drop even further.
Only the top teams should represent us in Europe, which excludes diddy teams like Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibs.

Dood,

So here we are. Bickering about the manager. Aye lets just all jump on the bandwagon and criticise him. Cause it must be all his fault, eh?

Well no actually, it's not. The legacy that Collins left was there for everyone to see. We were at the wrong end of the league, confidence was low and performances were poor. Mixu came in and, in a limited space of time, turned things around and made some astute signings. Agreed, Gathuessi is p*sh, but what other options are there?

Third place is still there for us. If we get it, Mixu should be regarded as a hero for turning things round. If we don't then hey ho, we re-group and start afresh next season, with a new influx of players.

If that fails, then we start looking at the manager. But to give him abuse now, and to call for him to go, is nothing short of disgraceful.

Dood,

#7 - Yes, the Scottish Cup qualification issue is a problem. But you clearly think that we should only have Rangers and Celtic qualifying for Europe? What's the point in that? And is it not the case that Aberdeen (diddy team according to you) have actually improved Scotlands co-efficient this year?

Got to agree with your defence of Mixu Paatalinin. He has worked wonders building the team up to the top 6 after the ridiculous run under Collins.

Now we will see his real ability (or not??) as he restructures the playing staff in the close season. Players I would like to see leaving (but most under contract) include Gatheussi (obvioiusly), Noubissi, Kerr, O'Brien, Zarabi, Benji and possibly Donaldson who obviously does not figure in the manager's plans. Not that impressed with Rankin.

We need to tie up Shiels on a longer better contract.

11

Dood,

26/04/2008 19:00:09
#10 - Exactly - give him time.

I think most of those you mention will be away. I do think that Benji is worth a chance thought - clearly has talent and I reckon that a good pre-season could make him.

Wasn't at the game today but sound like we threw it away. With the other two drawing though, we're still right in it.

The way to decide whether a manager is a good one or not is to see whether he picks teams that the majority of supporters would pick. Mowbrey did this nearly all the time. Collins started out well but by the end he couldn't pick a straight forward team and he and we paid for it.

Mixus come in and I've hardly agreed with any team he's picked. Still better than Collins and far too early to be talking about a replacement.

#10 Aye right Benji's rubbish.Especially when he's match fit and on top of his game. Oh, how I booed his two goals in last years Cup Final.

Get a grip.

go and beat Rangers next week and the Dons will try and do their bit last game of the season .

I think alot of us forget about what mixu has done, I am positive that we would be wandering in the bottom 6 with hearts had it not been for mixu, a few months back any Hibee would have taken a top 6 place never mind a European place, I admit Gathuessi (sp?) is a complete liability, moments of brilliance are out-weighed by moments of madness witnessed on 3 occasions over the past 6 days. I will reserve judgement on mixu and next season in accordance to who hibs axe and sign in the transfer window. Many of us are getting carried away and mixu has done a magnificent job in turning down a club low on morale and momentum. Next season is his first full season so let’s get behind him. Don't forget in the short winter window he brought in Murray, Rankin and Nish who have been successes so far! Mixu has admittedly conceded that hibs are not playing the football that he wants played at this moment. That proves that he is trying to build a team that’s solid and full of "flair", I mean Zemmama, Sheils and Makalamby look different players under Mixu, so stay positive, next season I predict Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United to be main competors for 3rd with Motherwell dropping out.

Lots of work to be done to that Hibs side. A misfiring Dons side should have been 3-0 up before you snuck you goal on the counter.

AND IF YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY>
You will know that Hibs had little chance yesterday with a certain S Dougal in charge. He and Hibs do not walk the same path. Some of his performances in the past have been abysmal so it was no surprise against the Dons. Two players red carded for dissent. Watch the game today and see how many of the OF players even get a yellow for it. none I bet.
Dougal is anti Hibs. It is as plain as the nose on his face, brings the meaning of consistant to a new level.
A sick incompetant buffon who must have recieved a whistle in a lucky bag, he certainly didn't earn it.

Your obviiously talking P!sh.

If your trying to claim your team is great by having more points this season, then your obviously a deluded Romanov follower.

If you end up with more points than us then the only reason is that you've been playing the bottom six clubs for the last few games.

We've shown over the first 3/4 of the season that we've deserved to be in the top half of the league, you're joke of a team didn't and if you were playing the top clubs no doubt gretna would be getting a bit worried about securing relegation.
