Published Date: 10 October 2008
ABERDEEN have lost their appeal against Charlie Mulgrew's controversial red card in the 2-1 defeat by Hibernian on Saturday.
Mulgrew was sent off for handling on the line after Steven Fletcher flicked on Derek Riordan's shot with goalkeeper Jamie Langfield stranded.

Fletcher was standing in an offside position in the six-yard box but neither assistant referee Wes Boulst
ridge or referee Mike McCurry spotted the offence.

However, the Dons had been told not to expect success in their claim for wrongful dismissal as the mistake would not be considered.

The SFA insisted Aberdeen would have to prove Mulgrew did not deliberately handle the ball.

McCurry yesterday upheld his decision to dismiss the Scotland Under-21 left-back for denying his opponent a goal.

An SFA statement read: "Having viewed the video evidence, the referee acknowledged that it clearly shows player Steven Fletcher was in an offside position when he struck the ball.

"However, given the circumstances (ie, the offside decision having not been given], the referee had to conclude that the player was correctly sent off."

Riordan stroked home the resulting penalty to win the game for Hibs and help consign Aberdeen to bottom spot in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

And their punishment will continue as Mulgrew is now suspended for the visit to Falkirk on 18 October.

Aberdeen midfielder Fraser Fyvie, meanwhile, has been included in the Scotland Under-16 squad to face Wales next Friday at Broadwood. The match will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Squad: Goalkeepers: R Thomson (Celtic), S Thomson (Hearts). Defenders: Hunter, Noble (both Rangers), Kerr (Motherwell), Ketterer (St Mirren), McAusland (Rangers), Young (Celtic). Midfielders: Fyvie, Grimmer (both Aberdeen), Main, McGeogh (both Rangers), C McGregor (Celtic), G McGregor (Falkirk). Forwards: Lindsay (Hamilton), Ramsay (St Mirren), Smith, Walker (both Hearts).

Never mind Jimmy - McVittie and McCurry and Asst Referee must go. This SFA decision is a disgrace, surely mitigating circumstances because McCurry admits Fletcher was in an offside position could at least replace a Red for a Yellow Card. And to think of the money paid out to these 2 officials incl expenses they are no better than the senior Bank Executives who caused the "Crunch".

#2 yep, Aberdeen getting a red card has to be up there with the current financial disasters which are impacting everyone right now. Job losses at HBOS? Cannae sell your house? Nothing compared to what Aberdeen FC suffered during Black Saturday in October 2008.

Since 4 mentioned the unmentionable, what about SDM's comments to the AGM yesterday. If and it's a very big if he wants to stop this bile and other nonsense that is associated with his club there are two things he could do immediately that would prove his intent. 1 Stop the playing of flute music over the PA system at the stadium especially the ditty about following on to Dublin which the perpetrators of this bile sing with some gusto. " If the warnings are not heeded then take the team of the park making a stand against the apparently unwanted. No surrender to the bigots, that would be admirable and prove to the better supporters that he means business.

Yeh yeh yeh - and once upon a time a throw-ins was given the wrong way and as a result a defender tackled an attacker and was given a red card..............
Stop yer bleating - yer team's sh1te and bottom of the league where they should be.
JC's excuses, like his face, have dried up and reality is on the doorstep ( unless of course, the relegation rules are changed again to keep the lambs from the slaughter )
And by the way, Miller should have been booked for his illegal challenge from behind on Bamba and the penalty reversed - no comment from Jimmy on this one ?

Just goes to show how out of touch the SFA are. Baaad (sorry, that's childish) enough that the sheepies concede a penalty because of incompetency from the officials, but to sanction the sending off - thus endorsing incompetency - speaks volumes of the SFA's ability to regulate football in Scotland.
