Calderwood calls on Dons to serve up Celtic shock

Published Date: 27 September 2008
ABERDEEN manager Jimmy Calderwood wants his players to silence their critics by pulling off a shock Clydesdale Bank Premier League win at Celtic today.
Dons supporters booed their side off after last week's home defeat to Dundee United and then watched in horror as Kilmarnock scored four goals in the first 33 minutes to knock their side out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Wednesday night.

With the pressure mounting on his players, Calderwood believes the ideal way for them to respond would be by beating champions Celtic on their own turf. He said: "Some people will say this isn't the right time for us to go to Celtic Park but when is there a good time to go there? If we can get a result down there then people may realise things are not as bad as they think. We won there in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup last season and nobody expected us to do it then. Most people won't expect us to get a victory this time either so hopefully we can prove them wrong once again."

The manager hopes the fans who are growing increasingly impatient after seeing their side slump to three defeats in a row will remember the highs of last season, when the Dons produced a series of impressive performances in the Uefa Cup. "This is a great football club with great supporters and high expectation levels," Calderwood said.

"When things are going well, it is absolutely brilliant and when it doesn't, the supporters get upset and rightly so because they pay good money to come and watch us.

"We're letting them down at the moment but I hope they remember the good times we've had. Not so long ago we took 8,000 people to Madrid, not forgetting all the other journeys we made in the Uefa Cup, which were brilliant. Everybody is disappointed right now but we've been in this situation before and we have always come out of it and I'm sure we will get through it again."

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan played down the problems Calderwood is having but admitted he was immensely satisfied with his own side's domestic form. He also said the Champions League match against Villarreal next midweek will not be a distraction to his players.

He said: "Our priority is the Aberdeen game. They made it hard for us last year, we beat them 1-0 at the end of the season and we got beat by them in the cup. I know how hard it can be against them here but this has been a good spell for us."

Strachan also confirmed Celtic will sign American goalkeeper Dominic Cervi. The 22-year-old turned down a contract with Major League Soccer after being selected by Chicago Fire and had a trial with Portsmouth without being offered a deal but Strachan was sufficiently impressed to take him on board.

This is a no win situation ! Who do you hate the most ? If pressed I'll go for a 1 all draw. 5 players sent off from each team and both clubs fined £15 each for bad behaviour. Now if that had have been the Premier club ? Who knows ?

C'Mon the Hoops today.

A victory by a few goals and Mighty Celtic go to the top of the pile.

Last season, "Walters" ReaRangers blew up under pressure.

Would be interesting to see how they cope this time out.

"Walter" is all in for the league, demonstrating his "Less Mair Games" mantra in negotiating ReaRangers oot a Europe against Kaunus and doing his damndest to get oot the league cup against Partick.

Even this early, it could be a pivotal weekend.

Can "Walter" cope?

A poor mans Nakamura, without the quality of support around him he will flounder.

Hibttthhhh (following BBC Scotlands newly defined pronunciation of s) will have too much for "Walterttthhh" team on TTThhhunday.

2-0 to the Hibbeettthhh

Are you still stuck in the pre- Mendes days? Rangers are a much improved team this season and don`t have the pressure of Euro football tae worry about ... given that you sorry Smellic`s needed the help of the officials and crawled over the line for a narrow last day victory ... common sense tells you that Rangers are favourites for the title by a distance!

Though I hate to say it I have picked Celtc to win by two goals in the predictor minileague, my predictions for the week are,

Celtc 3 Sheep 1
D Utd 1 Hearts 1
Falkirk 2 Hamilton 1
ICT 1 Kilmarnock 2
Motherwell 2 St Mirren 0
Rangers 2 Hibs 1
Boyd for the first scorer

After my debut last week and a very respectable 10 points I am going to back these up with Mr. Ladbrokes.

Did we know that ReaRangers have been measured as 10X better than last season with the inclusion of Mendettthhh?

Scientifically proven as being a team as good as one with 110 men in it?

Its amazing just how great our commentators are.

We should be bleedin' grateful!

#5 aye right but even if this does happen we can at least count on 9 points when we play our banker games against Celtc to ensure normal service resumes.

Looking at the corresponding games between ReaRangers and the Hibees last season at Easter Road, ReaRangers win 2-0.

Now improved 10X by Mendettthhh, can Hibee's keep the score under 20?

Right in the stones...eh "Walter"?

20 - you have a goalkeeping crisis. McGregor is off form and Alexander is rotten.

You sold your best defender

Davie Weir is another year older.

Barry Ferguson will struggle to play many games this season.

"Walter" will revert to 4-5-1 and drop fat Boy(d).

You don't have another 20 goals a season striker.

Kevin Thompson is going backwards as a player.

Mendettthhh will struglle on the harder grounds as the season goes on.

All roads lead to 4 in a row.

In your dreams!

Cuellar was sold and the money bought Davis, Mendes and Edu, now that's good management!

Weir is still good enough for any team in the SPL, he never had any pace to lose in the first place.

Barry will be back next month to put the final nail in your coffin. What a midfield to choose from, Mendes, Ferguson, Davies, Thomson, Edu, De Beasley, etc. to name but a few.

Walter has the luxury of having the personnel to pick the formation to suit the opposition, does Chesney?

We will score goals from all over the team, including Boyd running riot once again with 30+ this season.

Kevin is part of a fantastic midfield and a player you would love to have.

Mendes tore your lot a new ersehole and will chip in with at least 10+ goals this season, face it you are sh!tting yourself at the thought of playing him again!

52 is coming!

"Rangers are a much improved team this season".....???

To date....you've been knocked out of Europe...

If you beat Hibs....you will be 1 point better off than at this time last season......and scored fewer goals?

On the other hand....if you don't beat Hibs...far fewer goals....fewer points and out of Europe.....

But you keep believing yer better than last year....

Celtic win today....we will have the same number of points as last season...still in the Champions league and depending on the score 2-3 goals fewer than last season.

Why did they lose 1-0 to Hamilton?

Aye rearrangerz are so good they need 120 minutes to see off the Partick Jags whilst champions Celtic, faced with the first division league leaders, simply shrug their shoulders , stick 4 in the net and prepare for spl duty today.

Eberdeen at home are most often no match for the Scottish Champions...but they retain a moderate goa threat throughout the match and so we'll have to take our chances when we're on top, which will probably be for 70-80 minutes.

Runners-up rearrangerz have a chance tomorrow to demonstrate that their early season run of results can be sustained over the season.
Defeat to the hibees would be a set back ....rearrangerz have quite a few new faces and if the going gets tough, the espirit de corps that carries a team through lean spells simply won't be there.
It's been fairweather from the word go for rearrangerz this season, and the challenge for a 'new' team comes when things are not well and dandy....and a good seeing to tomorrow by the hibees would be a step in the right direction , from a Celtic perspective.

Ask any Spurs fan about Pedro Mendes, and they'll tell you he started off on fire, then after a few good games, he disappeared.

Ask any Portsmouth fan, and they'll tell you the same thing.

The time to judge a southern European player in the SPL is in February/March, when they have come through an SPL winter.

Let's see how good Mendes is at Brockville on a cold, wet Wednesday night.

Same goes for Crosas too.

Well done to the champions.

We started well, got the goal, should have added to our lead two or three times, then in the last few minutes of the first half we let aberdeen right back into it though we took a 1v0 lead indoors.

Second half was end to end stuff from the start, and Aberdeen deserved their equaliser when it came, and the champions couldn't really complain when mulgrew lazered a belter of a free kick past Boruc for his and aberdeen's second.

But, the champions aren't champions for nothing, and , finding themselves 2v1 behind, the green machine burst into life. McDonald came on for Crosas and the scottish champions coiled into a 4-3-3 formation and put their foot flat on the floor and simply laid siege to the Aberdeen goal.

Celtic tore forward in wave after wave of attacks and eventually a dangerous cross in from mcgeady was steered into the net at the far post by McDonald.
But The Scottish Champions would never settle for a draw, and continued to surge forward , mcgeady eventually firing in a low cross which Jan beat everyone to and with his quick second touch drilled the ball into the net.

The Champions take all 3 points and rearrangerz will have to be at their best to hold the 3 point lead.

Most enjoyable game for a long time. End to end stuff, and the bhoys showed real caliber to take the three points. In fairness we couldn't have complained if we'd only got a draw. Believe that takes us top now-where we belong obviously.

Watched the 2nd half and it was a good match to watch.
Last 10 minutes it was all one sided, the rest of the 2nd half was fairly even and as R. said end to end.

Don't understand the changes Calderwood made late in the 2nd half it seemed to disrupt the Dons.

Had the tic down for a 2-0 win in the mini league, so at least they got me a point with the win.

Sadly, had visitors and had to spend afternoon in pub so now catching up-seems to have been a good game for the neutral (who are they?)Trademark last minute winner from Big Jan. Happy Days! Of course the Sheepies only try against the Currants-yeah right, they have probably taken more points against the good guys than against the guys in the black stetsons but why let facts get in the way? If only raGers could score a valid last minute winner against the Sheepies eh?
