ABERDEEN manager Mark McGhee is hopeful of making Stephen Hughes one of his first summer signings.
The midfielder's contract with Motherwell has expired and he has been linked with both Hearts and clubs south of the border.

However, McGhee believes his previous relationship with the 26-year-old at Fir Park could be enough to tempt him to Pittodrie.

"I'm fairly hopeful," said the new Dons boss.

"So far Stephen's options that he's been given by his agent and by clubs don't really jump out at him.

"I think we have an advantage in the sense that he knows us and he likes working with us."

Jim Paterson, who quit Motherwell for Plymouth in January 2008, is another target but reports linking Maros Klimpl with a move north are wide of the mark.

"Maros Klimpl is not someone I've been looking at," said McGhee.
On Paterson, however, he added: "He's a good footballer, he's left-sided, he gives you options in left midfield and at left-back.

"I'm just trying to look at all the permutations. Jim Paterson is one that's on the radar."

McGhee is also willing to hold talks with Jamie Smith, who is out of contract this summer and has been linked with a move to Toronto FC.

The former Celtic and ADO Den Haag winger has been plagued by injury
during his time at Pittodrie and McGhee has yet to decide whether to offer him a new deal.

He said: "At this stage, I wouldn't say he is someone I'd like to keep.

"What I would do, I'd like to explore exactly what went on with him, the injuries he has had.

"I've initiated some discussions between the club and his agent and Jamie himself just so that I can try to get to the bottom of why someone who could really be a good player for Aberdeen is leaving and why he has had these injury problems.

"I just want to examine that. I'm not saying at the moment we are going to re-sign but I'm going to look into it."

Hughes WILL be joining the mighty JTs.

Csaba has him top of his list and we've not spent any of the £10m war chest from last season.

frankly i think Csaba needs another MF "maestro" like Hughes like a whole in the head.
i think Iain Black is a better option than spindle leg Hughes.

#2 Iain Black will a fine player for the JTs - just the kind of signing we need. I understand he was ICT's Player of the Year.

Still think Hughes could and will be a decent signing.

Hope Hughes shows more ambition than his manager did. Hearts players have improved unbelievably under Csaba in just one season and Hughes could be a player if decides to join up. The other option is to follow motor mouth McGhee who told us Motherwell were the best team outwith the old firm last year....where did they finish again?

Would that be that the Hearts players who 'have improved unbelievably' who came to Pittodrie just after Christmas and who were so lethargic they deservedly lost 1-0 against a poor dons side? - how they finished third amazes me.
What do we reckon in the coming season if Hearts get knocked out of Europe at the first attempt and fail either to split the Old Firm or finish third, maybe Romanov will finally call time on his investment in Tynie - given that he only did so to try and get Ukios bank accepted here.
Re Hughes's ambition - one good reason why he won't be a Hearts player next season - he wants to be picked by his manager and not by a stay away chairman.....

Another uneducated comment from you.
You only scraped into Europe due to the fact Hearts beat DU and they lost the place in the last two games.
How you finished fourth does not amaze me as they say miracles happen sometimes.
McGhee is a man who promises a lot and delivers little.

#7 if hughes did pick aberdump over Hearts then it would be a first.

Normally players go to the bigger club with a better squad. As a result if Hearts want him he will sign.

Silly wee boy from a silly wee place with a silly wee club=-bottom lobster.

As the artical says it looks like hes heading north. Having one of the biggest debts in Scotland doesnt make you a big club.

Hearts were barely the best of a bad lot last season - I dont expect the standard to be as low this season. Bottom six again for you lot.

As for Black - he was good at ICT - but that was and is his level. Lower end SPL - funny as thats where Hearts belong too.

Bigger Club (No of Fans) - Tick
