MARK McGhee was unveiled as the new Aberdeen manager today and vowed to build on the progress begun by his predecessor Jimmy Calderwood by bringing trophies back to Pittodrie.
McGhee, who enjoyed a hugely successful spell at the club as a player under Alex Ferguson, joins from Motherwell. His deputy at Motherwell, will move with McGhee.

The pair replace the management team of Jimmy Calderwood, Jimmy Nicholl and Sandy Clark, who left at the end of last season.

McGhee was careful not to be roped in to claiming he would offer the same challenge to the Old Firm duopoly which was shattered in 1980s when Aberdeen under Sir Alex Ferguson were at at their peak.

"We can certainly ruffle the Old Firm's feathers.

"Aberdeen are a club who are big enough and the budget as such is significant enough to expect to be challenging to win trophies and get to finals.

"But winning trophies is the next stage, we have to continue the progress that Jimmy Calderwood made over the last few seasons."

McGhee explained why he felt it was the right time to leave Fir Park.

"It was a difficult decision but I feel it was the right decision," he said.

"Things have moved on a little bit.

"Motherwell had lost two or three players and we looked like losing two or three more due to the circumstances in the Scottish game so it was becoming more and more difficult to maintain the performance and levels that we set over the last couple of years at Motherwell.

"I felt that the opportunity to go to Aberdeen, to a more stable environment would allow me to make more of a challenge over the next few year than it might be possible with Motherwell.

"It is a shame, I loved my time there."

Dons director of football Willie Miller is delighted to be reunited with his former Pittodrie team-mate.

"The board was unanimous in the choice of Mark for our new manager, as everyone knows, these situations can be extremely delicate and you have to allow for all eventualities," he told the club's official website.

"That said, we're delighted Mark and Scott have agreed to join us and with the return of European football next month, these are exciting times here at Pittodrie.

"Mark is well known to most Aberdeen supporters and of course, having been here as a player, he also knows what the club means to them and he's itching to get started."

The new management team's first official day in charge will be Wednesday July 1 when the players report for pre-season training.

Dons vice-captain Zander Diamond is glad the Pittodrie club brought an end to a period of uncertainty by naming McGhee, the popular choice among the fans.

"It's great news for us, having a Gothenburg legend at the club," he told the club's official website.

"It is a bit of positive news coming out of the club from my point of view, having left three weeks ago uncertain about what was happening.

"I think the club will benefit from a new manager coming in.

"They are interesting times and exciting times and fans will give him time because he is a legend.

"Some fans were not behind previous managers but they will give the new manager their full backing."

No 3 watch press conference at 2pm. He will then start touting for his next job at 3pm citing financial pressures, no board support etc. Offski by the end of the year.

No 5. Most accurate user name ever (well the second part anyway)! I am sure he will delight in building on the immense talents, of Mackie, Duff (another accurate name), Foster, Consedine, Diamond etc. etc. Scotland's 3rd best team my pants.

BBC is reporting this as a 2 year contract. That does not seem like much of a mandate to me. I wonder why the term is so short.

Jealousy! It stinks of it. not surprised coming from Hearts fans, tiny little club, smaller than Aberdeen even, no history, empty trophy cabinet, overseas footballers playing for money only (who almost certainly wouldnt have heard of Hearts before coming to Scotland, who has outside?). Anyway Jambo's, keep the comments coming, its pathetic. Good Luck to McGhee!
11

Laddy Saunders,

I forgot to say, Jambo are you still upset because he chose Motherwell over Hearts ha ha, i dont blame him. Joke club, nothing club.

#11 McGhee bottled taking the Hearts job - to big for him.
Last time I looked Hearts finished 3rd and Dons nowhere.

No 11 He failed miserably last season at Well, even Hibs with Mixu beat them!!!. Laslo top manger in Scotland by a country mile last year Hertz were lucky McGhee did not come. Aberdeen broke, bust and need the cooncil to get them a ground at some hell hole in Torry or Altens or wherever. Oh yes the future is bright but it certainly aint red.

Argh! You got me there! I didn't realise I had put the word idiot in my username! Oh, how the barb stings.

Hearts will be lucky to be the 5th force next season.
15

GersFanOfFitba,

12/06/2009 11:49:55
Well, Mr McGhee will no doubt be gutted that his overtures for the Celtic job that he's been making since he got the motherwell job.

I remember such quotes as "when I used to go and see Celtic as a boy", and such....

....Will the Aberdeen fans hound him like they hounded Tango and Sash out of a job? :)

16

Johhny Jambo,

#14 what a riposte. That must have taken you all of 5 secs to think up.
17

Johhny Jambo,

12/06/2009 11:53:12
No 15 off cousre they will as they have done with the last 10 mangers since Fergie. They want to win the Europa Cup don't you know.
18

Laddy Saunders,

12/06/2009 11:54:37
#12 and #13 OK he bottled it - Hearts are massive, a mighty Scottish & European force, their trophy cabinet is full and has always been full - bottled it, i know you are being sarcastic. Finished 3rd! Awesome well done you. As for the council bailing us out - as a business Aberdeen is sustainable, if your dodgy owner decides to pack up which he inevitably will then your going under, not a good position to be in. Council bail us out or dodgy Lithuanian - what’s the difference? No History, small club.
ps Hearts are awesome and always have been.
19

Useful Idiot,

Glasgow 12/06/2009 11:57:32
The bottom line is you're all jealous. Admit it. You'll feel better for it.

@18 'no history' Hahaha, how exactly? What's YOUR history? Bottling the legaue in 1986...beating a diddy team to win the cup a couple of years ago...and that's about it.
20

You couldn't make it up,

12/06/2009 12:01:39
I am sure for Mutley this was sentimental decicision to join Wolves (sorry), I mean Scotland, no sorry I meant Celtic, no Sorry I mean Aberdeen. He is a mercanary media wh@re. Best place for him with the worst fans in Scotland

He is a manager who cannot take decisions!

Agreeing to manage Hearts and then changing his mind as he gets on a plane because of a phone call is unbelievable. Leadership skills=nil!

Perhaps it was his wife telling him he still had to do the dishes!

Anyway good luck Aberdeen, I think you will need it.

Did he not want the Celtic job anyway. Yet another OF fan for the Dons.
24

You couldn't make it up,

12/06/2009 12:13:10
He is the least trustworthy manager in the SPL. He lied to Hearts after shaking on the deal. Lied to Well about staying for another year, telling the fans they were the 3rd best team etc. despite finishiing a poor 7th. In the meantime trying to get the Celtic job. But it shows how highly he is thought of in that his name was not mentioned for any of the English championship teams nor 1st division teams needing a manager. Total failure at almost every club he has managed at, never left a club on good terms. Lets see if his extensive European contact book brings many players up the the frozen north.
25

Laddy Saunders,

12/06/2009 12:16:38
#24 very bitter, is he your estranged dad?
You seem to think footballers and managers are generally very loyal?? The rest of what you wrote is not true, total failure? have a word.

Thanks, Pazuzu (fantastic username BTW, I know EXACTLY where that comes from...!) Not surprising to find the only generous, reasonable comment coming from a supporter of Edinburgh's more pleasant club. For what it's worth I hope Yogi does well for you guys too - most of my mates down here are Hibees.

As for me I'm happy enough. The saga dragging on and on was beginning to get tiresome in the extreme. Ultimately we could have done a lot worse, though I fear that if he does have a decent season he'll be offski as soon as a bigger club comes in for him. Hey ho, that's a nice problem to have.

Welcome back, Dengus!

Excellent move all round and let’s get to work. Should be 2nd placed team in Scotland within 3 years…no problem if MM then moves on to a bigger job with Celtic or Scotland.

#34 Money doesnt buy happiness! Look at how bad Rangers are and how much money they have spent in the last 10 years, 1 decent (lets not include the Uefa Diddy cup) European run might have been good. I doubt Aberdeen will split the old firm but if they do we can be sure it will be Rangers who are in 3rd place as FACT shows Celtic are the bigger club.
