SCOTS drink almost two litres more alcohol per person a year than people in the rest of the UK, campaigners said yesterday.
Figures showed that last year over-16s in Scotland drank the equivalent of 11.8 litres of pure alcohol per person – compared with 9.9 litres drunk in England and Wales.

Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (Shaap) said it disproved claims by
the industry that Scots were drinking less than people elsewhere in the UK.

Research has suggested that a one-litre increase in average alcohol consumption is linked to a 30 per cent rise in alcohol-related liver cirrhosis deaths.

Most of the difference between Scotland and the rest of the UK was seen in spirits. While Scottish over-16s drank 3.5 litres of spirits, the figure for England and Wales was 1.8 litres.

Shaap said previous comparisons of drinking habits had been made using data from population surveys and drinkers often under-reported by as much as a half. But they had analysed figures based on alcohol sales in the UK.

Dr Bruce Ritson, who chairs Shaap, said the figures reinforced the need to act now to reduce overall alcohol consumption in Scotland.

"The most effective and efficient means of reducing the demand for alcohol is to regulate price and availability," he said.

After having the New labour Sleaze and Corruption Party in power for so long in Scotland, it's no wonder that people have been driven to drink. Maybe being without them in power over the next fifty years will cure the problem.

We'll no doubt get the usual comments making fun of the drinking habits here. Its not funny, its an illness. Take a step back and look at the mess we are in. We accept to much bad behaviour.

or is that data presented to warn scots

is this an increase or a decrease,
over what time scale

what was the study size, the age ranges
are they sure questions where answered

and now for the crunch question
and why do 'they' think the scots

And it needed a survey to tell us this? At what cost to the tax payer?

So what?

The other countries had better get their acts in gear and catch up then. Hadn't they?

And where did these figures come from anyway? Presumably from the alcohol sales figures. In which case they include alchol sold to Dutch, French, Italians, Americans, Spanish, Latvians, Poles, English, Portugese, African, Icelandic, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Austrian, Australian, New Zealanders, Canadians, Chinese, Japanese, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian, Nepalese....

...In fact, it includes people from almost every nation with the possible exception of North Korea.

Here we have yet another meaningless set of statistics that has been turned into a scare story by the anti-everything brigade.

#6. Yes. Depends on what survey is done and where it is carried out. Next week they will have a story to tell us we are drinking about the same as the English. All this means is that the Hootsman can fill its pages up with uninteresting drivel that nobody gives a t*ss about.

#9:

I tell you who does give a t*ss about it... the antis.

The reason they give a t*ss about it is because their propaganda message is slowly getting through.

Think back 20 years when all the anti-smoking propaganda started. Everyone (with the exception of a few fanatical loonies) thought it was a joke and wished they would shut up. Of course 20 years on, look what happened. The same will happen with drink next... unless of course we stop giving these loonies a platform and people start standing up for their rights.

What more can be done to stop drunks congregating in the city’s streets?
The police should step up patrols and move them on
More use should be made of public drinking bans
Nothing, such people will always be with us
