Money talks, but sometimes the common man won't listen

THE most difficult decisions are those which have to be made when there is merit on both sides of an argument. This is the case in the controversy in Aberdeenshire over the American developer Donald Trump's plan for a lavish golf resort which was rejected last week by the county council's planning committee.
The fact that this rejection was determined by the casting vote of the committee's chairman, Martin Ford, demonstrates just how evenly opinion - and also, it may be said, merit - are divided.
