PITREAVIE'S Eilidh Child is finishing the season with a flourish.
Following her two splendid races in the Scottish Championships on her home track the previous weekend, when she twice set personal best times in retaining her 400 metres hurdles title, the 21-year-old Edinburgh graduate set another best for the flat
400m in the British Plate final at Bedford on Saturday.

Child won the race in 53.71 seconds to take almost half a second off her previous best and moves up to 17th on the Scottish all-time list.

In difficult conditions clubmate Ryan Oswald won the men's 100m in 10.93sec, but Pitreavie could finish only fourth overall.

At the same track Edinburgh AC had to settle for sixth in the British Women's Cup event, handicapped by two call-offs.

Nicola Gauld was Edinburgh's only winner of the day, in the 1500m, which ended up being a virtual solo run as many of the clubs had anticipated there being a 3000m event, not a 1500m.

Winsor, Slough and Eton took the trophy, with Rugby second and Newham and Essex third.

EAC fared better yesterday in the UK National Young Athletes final at Manchester where they finished fourth, the highest-ever position by a Scottish club.
