THE Edinburgh Cup swings into action tonight with the preliminary round of the event sponsored by Specsavers Opticians involving 12 of the 38 member clubs of the Edinburgh Bowling League.
Queensberry are the highest-ranking club on duty with the promoted Division 2 champions currently sitting fourth in the highly-competitive Division 1 and start as strong favourites against Division 3 outfit Brunstane.

Tramways are the pacesett
ers in Division 4 and it will be interesting to see how they cope with formidable Division 2 opposition in Corstorphine.

Foot-of-the-table Division 2 club Seafield will be looking for a good result against their Division 3 counterparts Summerside while Liberton, of Division 3, clash with Lutton Place of Division 5 and Coltbridge of Division 5 take on Civil Service of Division 4.

The remaining fixture features foot of the table Division 4 club Trinity against The Edinburgh, who are sitting joint bottom of Division 3.

All the matches start at 7.00pm.

Elsewhere, Slateford scored a 3-2 home win over defending champions Sighthill to retain a slender two-point lead over chief danger Carrick Knowe in the race for the First Sixteens title of the Water of Leith League.

Carrick Knowe failed to make ground on the leaders but their 3-2 home win over Bainfield did a bit of damage to their third-placed rivals. Sighthill are some seven points off the main the pace in fourth place.

East Lothian import James Hogg was the star figure in Carrick Knowe's win over Sighthill, skipping Craig Aitken, Bill Little and Graham Pringle to a 19-8 win over Brian Stoddart.

It was Hogg's margin that tipped the bonus point for aggregate in favour of the home side when added to the 20-17 success of Fred Carter, Colin Spence, John Mitchell jun and Richard Tough against John Storrier.

Bainfield's Paul O'Donnell skipped Stuart Clark, John Milne and Alec Ross to a 21-13 win over Darren Hush.

And a trailed jack for three by his third player at the final end saw Craig Moss skip Adam Brock, Willie Dyet and Martin Cameron to a 13-10 win over Kevin Tennant, Robert Mitchell, John Priestley and Alan Poole.
