CAPITAL pro welterweight Gary Young has decided to try and boost his boxing career by moving to the United States and basing himself in Los Angeles.
Young has gone to California with his partner, where he will link up with another Edinburgh exile southpaw middleweight, Craig McEwan. Young said: "I was out in LA at Freddie Roach's gym with Craig last month and I was hugely impressed by the set-u
p and the far greater chances to progress my career in the US so I'm planning to settle there and hopefully enhance my career prospects.
"It's a gamble, but worth taking especially as some of the people at Freddie's gym told me they were impressed by me in sparring."
A brilliant amateur, winning many gold medals in international competitions, Young turned pro with English manager Frank Maloney in March 2002, subsequently running up a 15-bout winning streak before suffering a traumatic first-round knockout loss to Fauldhouse rival Colin McNeil at Meadowbank in April 2006.
After leaving Maloney's fight stable, Young then joined Barry Hughes' Glasgow-based Braveheart Promotions, for whom he was unbeaten in two bouts, although he had a long recent spell of ring inactivity after breaking his right hand while outpointing Englishman David Kirk last year in Paisley.
Young's former ring coach at Braveheart, Billy Nelson, confirmed: "Gary has received his contract back at his request and parted from Braveheart."
