Hartley keen for more new arrivals alongside Samaras

PAUL Hartley admits the signing of Georgios Samaras has boosted the Celtic players following his impact on the club's successful title push.
The Greece international striker, who scored six goals despite a limited number of starts after his January loan signing, yesterday completed a permanent transfer from Manchester City.

Samaras will now be keen to dislodge Scott McDonald and Jan
Vennegoor of Hesselink from the starting line-up after pledging his future to Celtic for three years. "He made a big impact when he came into the team," Hartley said.

"He scored a lot of important goals for us, so he is going to be a big player for us again.

"He enjoys his football here. He probably had other offers or he could have stayed at Man City but he wanted to come here and show what he can do."

Samaras is understood to have taken a £10,000 cut in his weekly wage to sign for the Scottish champions after taking to the "family" atmosphere at Parkhead.

And former Hibernian and Hearts midfielder Hartley, who signed for Celtic 18 months ago, agrees that the atmosphere is unique.

"This club is special, there is no doubt about that," the Scotland international said. "To play for a club the size of Celtic is a fantastic feeling, and as Samaras said, we have got a fantastic team spirit here.

"We all work hard together, try and win as many football games as we can. There is no better place to play your football.

"Every second week you are playing in front of a full house of 60,000, so why would you want to play anywhere else?"

The team spirit Hartley rates so highly helped Celtic to an unlikely Clydesdale Bank Premier League title win last season.

Gordon Strachan's men won their last seven games to lift the trophy on the final day after consecutive defeats by Rangers and Motherwell appeared to have ended their hopes.

Hartley said: "Everybody had written us off probably four or five months before the end of the season but we knew as a group of players that we were very strong mentally, and knew if we could keep a run of games going that we could win the championship. That's the way it ended up.

"This season is another new challenge again because everyone will have a stronger squad.

"It's not just Rangers who are adding players. Dundee United will be very strong again, Aberdeen, maybe Hearts will be a bit stronger too."

I'm seeing this or similar everywhere:

"Samaras is understood to have taken a £10,000 cut in his weekly wage to sign for the Scottish champions"

Now, as I understand, "understood" when used by the old media means made up.

I understand yer tea's oot McCafferty.

The Laptop Loyal, aka Mad Murray's Poodles, aka Scottish Media report that Rangers had withdrawn their contract offer to Danny Shittu because he asked for too much money.

One English-based newspaper comes up with the truth - Mad Murray offered Shittu a deal which he accepted. Then Watford upped the transfer fee by 300k. Lo and behold, when the player arrives in Glasgow to finalise the deal, he discovers that Mad Murray has reduced the agreed salary to make up - at least in part if not in total - the 300k shortfall. Shittu then says, no way.

So what do the wonderful Scottish Media do in response? - they slap it all over their papers that Samaras is taking a 10k a week wage-cut to move to Celtic.

Question:
How does The Daily Record - which is the origin of this story - know exactly how much Celtic have offered the player, let alone what he was on at Man City?

Answer:
They don't. They took a wild guess. I would imagine any player bought by an EPL club for 6m would put him on between 35k and 40k a week. When that player is subsequently sold on to an SPL club for 1.2m I would not be surprised to find that he is on substantially less than 35 to 40 grand a week.

My point?
Anyone, like I just did, would easily arrive at that conclusion, without knowing the precise details. So why is it deemed newsworthy? Why is it deemed worthy of banner headlines? Because (they think) it takes the heat off Mad Murray's decision to renage on a contract AND the Scottish Media's failed attempt to cover it up.

Only in Scotland.

That should have a few of the drones foaming at the mouth eh?

thepundit - read my post again - or was it too long for your alcohol-damaged brain? I did say The Record was probably right, but did it merit banner headlines and a full page story?

#12 thepundit - you have just made another ass of yourself.

You say the fact that Samaras is taking a big cut in wages is worthy of a banner headline and a full page spread.

Then you say: "so your team couldnt offer him premiership wages? so what? hardly a suprise"

MY POINT EXACTLY !!!!!!!!!

Latest news:

Tamas to sign, followed by Antunes on a 1-year loan, followed by Shaun Maloney. Also chasing a holding midfielder.

Balde, Naylor, Riordon and Gravesen to leave.

What is this pundit moron all about? It does nothing but provoke trouble and antagonise everyone.

Hey pundit, away back to yer hole and let people at least try and get on with each other.

Hey rask, is your post "19" wishful thinking or do you have inside information. If you are right then what you have posted is VERY exciting.

We will have Hinkel and Antunes as the two full-backs, backed up by Perriere-Doumbe and Wilson.

I think Scott Brown will be like a new signing this season, after his family problems and having to live up to the huge transfer fee last season.

The pressure will be off a bit. He is fresh and fit and raring to go.

Thought Hartley did ok for us last season nad I like the way he asserted himself in the last two OF games.

He's getting on a bit but I reckon he has two more season at the top and if we can get two good season out of him then he'll have been well worth the £1m quid we paid for him.

Scott Brown can only learn from him and Barry Robbo - who has been a revelation.

I think we will have some team next season.

I'm not convinced by Brown. I went to Easter road for the 2-2 game just before Thomson and Brown were punted.

Hibs were 2-0 up at half time and I thought if the pair were THAT good they should be able to shut the game down in the second half.

Celtic brought on Sno and McGeady at half time and the absolutely bossed the game.

In fact we should have won it in the last 5 minutes but our centre forword missed a 1 on 1 sitter........guess who?

Yes been decent in patches but £4 Million? I absolve the lad of any drop in form last year however and I am fond of hunmble pie.

Mr Hartley, Samaras did have an impact on the side when he arrived, but lets not forget, when you and Barry Robson took over in the midfield, you had a bigger impact! You two dragged us over the finish line. I firmly believe that and Strachan deserves credit for making the switch and sticking to it. So well done to you sir.

18 months ago you were the villan at Tyncastle, today you're a hero in Paradise.

Thankyou!

#5 - Raskolnikov, you know you are totally correct. It really is an injustice what you, as a Celtic supporter, have to put up with. The Daily Record and their other pro-Rangers cohorts are just dastardly. Have you thought about writing to Gordon Brown? Maybe Alex Salmond? Surely someone can put a stop to it all!!

Failing that, maybe just lay off the waccy tabaccy for a few weeks until the paranoid delusions go away. And avoid alcohol too, its a depressant don't you know.

McGeady signs 5 year deal - Fishal!
News I gave you this morning now confirmed, ya dancer.

delight as mcgeady signs new five-year deal
Paul Cuddihy
CELTIC are today delighted to announce that Aiden McGeady has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract.

McGeady was voted Scotland’s Player of the Year by his fellow professionals last season and his form throughout the campaign helped Celtic win their third league title in a row and reach the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for a second consecutive season.

And the news that McGeady has signed a new five-year contract will delight Celtic supporters, who voted him their Player of the Year at the club's annual awards dinner last night (Wednesday, July 16).

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “This is wonderful news for the club and our supporters.

“Aiden's performances in recent seasons have made him the outstanding player in Scottish football and clearly we are delighted that he has committed his long-term future to the club.

“Our priority has always been to try and keep our best players at the club and the Board is delighted to support Gordon in his plans for the future by securing Aiden on this long-term agreement.

Well predicted there Chucky ....superb news about Aiden

Must say he was worth season ticket money on his own last season ,and I'm so glad to have the most skillfull player in Scotland in a Celtic jersey .

He silenced a lot of critics re consistency and goal scoring last season ,as well as improving work rate and timing as to when he can best impact a game .

Deserves all the praise he gets...got booked more times than he deserves ...the price of brilliance

Been a quiet close season ...would like to see a quality left back getting signed up as soon as,other than that cannae wait ,even got a game to watch on shitanta tomorrow night...

hail hail

#36 I was one of the many who doubted the lhad could improve.

Where he got the extra pace from last close season is something that needs bottling, he's obviously got some great coaching available to him and he's using it.

Fair play to the bhoy, if he keeps improving at the rate he is then the sky is the limit.

If you cannot be enthralled and appreciate the kind of stuff he was doing against Aberdeen and AC Milan then football is not for you.
