Published Date: 18 October 2008
Celtic were fortunate not to be behind after the first half of today's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash at Inverness.
Young striker Garry Wood was guilty of missing a glorious chance when he shot straight at Artur Boruc with the goal gaping.

However, Caley were lucky to go into half-time with all 11 players on the field as Ian Black looked lucky to escape a second booking for a foul on Aiden McGeady.

Ian Black picked up the first yellow card of the day after 28 minutes for scything down McGeady, who was heading towards the Inverness box at pace.

A terrible pass from Loovens gifted Imrie a chance to run at the Celtic defence and Stephen McManus had no option but to bring down the Caley midfielder 30 yards from goal. Imrie dusted himself down before firing a well-struck free-kick inches over Artur Boruc's goal.

Garry Wood should have given Inverness the lead after linking up well with Cowie but the young striker's shot straight at a thankful Boruc.

As half-time, approached Crosas was booked for impeding Cowie.

Black was then very fortunate to remain on the park after fouling McGeady but referee Iain Brines kept his cards in his pocket.

Scott Brown was booked for a late tackle on Imrie as the game began to get increasingly scrappy.

Maloney had another chance from a free-kick just before the end of the first half but Grant Munro did well to head the ball away from danger.

Celtic had the first chance of the second half but Maloney wasted another free-kick after Robson had been fouled by Imrie.

However, the vocal travelling support did not have to wait too long to see the opening goal of the afternoon.

Robson found Lee Naylor in space and the Englishman delivered a pinpoint ball for Brown, who gave Fraser in the Caley goal no chance with an excellent finish.

Inverness defender Phil McGuire was stretchered off with a serious-looking ankle injury and replaced by Jamie Duff after 53 minutes.

Black had an opportunity to get his side back on level terms after good work by Ross Tokely and Wood but the midfielder's effort was tame.

Celtic made a double substitution, with Wilson and Cillian Sheridan replacing Gary Caldwell and the tiring McDonald, who had travelled to Australia in midweek.

The change had an immediate impact when Loovens ventured forward to head home his second goal for Celtic from a Robson cross.

Craig Brewster responded by changing to a two-man strikeforce, bringing on Adam Rooney for Black.

But it was Celtic who could have had a third when McGeady exploded down the right before firing a menacing ball across the face of goal that Robson was only inches away from connecting with.

With the visitors still lamenting that miss, Inverness went up the park and scored to make for an interesting finish.

Tokely's cross was well won by Rooney for Wood, who forced the ball past Boruc.

Ian Brines bottled it from giving black a second yellow : it was a right dirty kick at McGeady bringing him down as Celtic were breaking forward...a few minutes later, Brines booked Scot Brown for his first foul of the match.

Brown's yellow was deserved, but it wasn't half as bad as Black's kick at McGeady.

Appalling inconsistency by the referee.

the most disturbing aspect of today was having the misfortue to hear radio clydes "super" scoreboard..how the mighty fallen..asking daft questions and all laughing among themselves at wee injokes and generally indulging in unfunny banter...
did also have to listen to mark guidi make up the idea that other scottish players were unhappy with burley whilst admitting he had no evidence for this..prat
then had to listen to the mentally ill feed fat parasite jim traynors ego by attacking george burlewy and likening him to berti vogts..sad that cretins like traynor and guidi pollute our media...

Looks like Mark Guidi is unfortunate enough to be despised by both sides.

I've never complained to a newspaper in my life, but a couple of years ago I came very close to demanding that the Sunday Mail prevent Guidi from reporting on any further Rangers matches because he was always very negative about their performances, and seemed, to me at least, to be a very obvious Celtic fan.

I think we all see what we want to see.

my post dosent comment on guidis club allegences....my point is that he is part of a scottish media that set the agenda and that abenda is small minded negative and more to do with the egos of the parasites that pollute the airwaves and newspapers..the medias attack on burley have been horrendous..i may think my club gets a harder time from the media..partly supported by sir daves 80% statement..but ultimately my point is the media are a pox on all our houses. xxx

I watched the game on channel 67 , and as soon as they transferred from the studio to the stadium just before K.O., I could hear the wind blowing into the microphone of the commentator whose opening remark was that it was 'bitterly cold'.

Immediately I knew that getting the three points would prove a difficult task because the weather conditions suited Caley far more than they did us.

I actually hated playing football in those kind of conditions, when you can't hear a darn thing and your face and hands are frozen, and the ball swirls around, hanging in the air. The blinding Autumn sunlight just adds to the problems.

Still, despite the conditions, the game was reasonably entertaining. Celtic were moving the ball around reasonably well, and despite some fast accurate cross-field passing, Caley hung in there and indeed the best chance of the first 45 fell to them.

But the champions just kept working with patient build up play and eventually we breached them through a great finish from SB.

Robson was instrumental in both goals, later putting in a superb cross which Loovens bulleted home with a header from around 8 yards.

Caley pulled one back and it made for a nervy finish although Celtic looked more likely to go 3v1 up.
Nevertheless, there were some anxious moments during the last 15 minutes, but Celtic defended well when we needed to and collected all three points.

It was vital that we took three points today which puts pressure on rearrangerz.
More than a few rearrangerz fans would have put this one down as a banana skin for the champions, but now they must think again.

Whoever wrote this needs the proverbial pair of (clear not tinted) glasses.
The shot was never straight at Boruc, Boruc had to stick out a toe to save it !

Nice three tricky points for Celtic to go clear at the top, and another sometimes tough fixture out of the way..

Happy hooppy days are here again.

I agree Hugh...losing both Jan and Sami is a major blow. I get the impression that Strachan doesn't bluff, and if Sami was fit he'd at least have been on the bench today.

I'm sure he would have wanted to rest Sami today, but I would have thought he'd have had him on the bench just in case things went awry.

So whilst I share your hope that it is a bluff, my money's on Sami not being fit...the bluff theory holds little weight anyway as I doubt that Fergie's preparation and strategic planning will be altered to the slightest extent.
Fergie will assume that we play with 1 up front and his back 4 will be expected to deal with whoever we throw at them.

So, it is a major blow as are Crosas and Caldwell...on Friday I was very upbeat about our chances at OT, but in the last 24 hours we seem to have lost three players that I wanted to start.

Not Celtics best performance but the Champions killed this one off in a fifteen minute spell after half time to put clear daylight between us and the also-rans.

Bit bemused to see Loovens at right back with Caddis sitting in the stand. What does this boy have to do to get a game.

Midfield all played well. Robson tenacious and determined, Brown full of running and energy, Crosas cultured and composed (not sure about the Teenwolf beard though) and McGeady creative and entertaining as usual.

Sheridan played well when he came on and gives the Gers another Irishman to have the "banter" with. Unconscious in Ashton Lane this time next week probably.

Daunting trip to Old Trafford on Tuesday but thats what the Champions League is all about and we have to show self belief. Game on live on ESPN for us exiled in Oz at 5:45am. Too early for a beer?

And Hinkel ? Hmmm...he hasn't really set the heather on fire and I share the exasperation of Big Stevie at 21 about why Caddis wasn't given a shout today.

But I expect Wilson to start at RB and if Hinkel is fit, likely he'll make he bench.

BTW

I wouldn't bet heavily against Cilian Sheridan starting.
He doesn't have a tenth of SM's experience, but he might have a locker more suited to what we need on tuesday...he's a big strong lad and he's got a decent touch and an eye for goal.
He links up well with the midfield and sees the bigger picture coming forward. He holds the ball up well back to goal.

Bhoys...

Entertaining though it undoubtedly is to debate tactics, formation and personnel, let's face the grim reality.

It's all rather akin to East Stirling pondering their choices prior to a trip to CP. Ultimately, put out 11 players, ask them to play out of their skins, and pray to the Virgin Mary.

Because, if the home team hit top gear... you're TOAST.

I think you're right about his reason for selecting him but IMO its no use having a physical presence there if he's uncomfortable playing full back especially for a left footed player at right back. For me Caddis's lack of game time is this seasons biggest mystery . He has looked dynamite any time I have seen him.

I would have liked to see Ben Hutchison get a game on Tues but he is not match fit having only recently came back from injury. No choice but to play Skippy up front on his own.

My shout injuries permitting

The same could be said about any team going to the home of one of the top teams in Europe . Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan or Man U. If any of these teams hit top gear most European opposition would be toast.

But football is not as simple as that. If Hull City can go to Arsenal and win then anything is possible.

The main thing is to enjoy rubbing shoulders with Europes elite.

Enjoy the spectacle.

I would never pray for Celtic to win...whatever divine intervention is available let it go to alleviating child poverty.

Were an angel to visit me tonight and say that if I agree to Celtic being beaten 10v0 every match for the next hundred years in exchange for zero child poverty, I would try to negotiate, but if it was take it or leave it I'd say I'll take it and then I'd tell the angel to F. off.

Man Utd have that bit more flair than most, and when they hit top gear, they can leave you chasing shadows.

Slowly would be the only honest answer to that one, Hugh. Holding down a job, three kids to keep me busy, and moving house in a couple of weeks.

But hope springs eternal, and once I get settled in and get down to a normal routine, I plan to speed ahead.

At this rate, I'll end up like Kate Bush (a neighbour of mine, BTW) and give the public something new once every eight years!
