SOUTHAMPTON legend Matt Le Tissier is glad former team-mate Scott McDonald's confident approach has been rewarded with success at Celtic as the pair prepare to be reunited.
McDonald will return to St Mary's next week for former team-mate Claus Lundekvam's testimonial as Scottish football's top gaolscorer – just five years after being released by Southampton.

The Australian refused to give up on his dream of playing
at the top level in British football and resurrected his career during a successful spell at Motherwell. That convinced Gordon Strachan, the manager who freed him at Southampton, to shell out £700,000 for his services and McDonald repaid him with a 31-goal debut season at Celtic Park.

Le Tissier is keen to be reunited with the striker, now 24, who impressed him with his determined attitude as a youngster.

"I knew Scott when he was a young, cocky Australian trying to make his way," Le Tissier said. "He's done really well for himself and it will be good to see him again.

"He never struggled in having confidence in his ability, and with that kind of attitude, you thought he would make it. He's done brilliantly to work his way up the way he has and has got himself a cracking move.

"I saw he just signed a new contract in the summer as well, so I am chuffed to bits for him and I have so much respect for the way he has gone about it."

Le Tissier is also looking forward to Strachan's return to Southampton and will pull on his boots against Celtic a week on Friday. "It'll be a first for me and Claus himself, who really had his heart set on getting Celtic for his testimonial," said the former England international.

"Gordon was his favourite manager and he really wanted to play against Celtic and have a special night for his last game.

"I had my last nine months as a pro under Gordon as well and I am just happy that I didn't have to endure one of his pre-seasons – which are quite legendary.

"That was probably Claus's best spell during his career and people have a lot of respect for what Gordon did in his time down here."

When Gordon Strachan gathered his squad around him on the Tannadice pitch after clinching 3-in-a-row, he addressed them thus:

"Don't you listen to them up there . . . them with their laptops and phones who have been telling you all year you weren't good enough. You won this title for yourselves, for this magnificent support and for Tommy. You can all be proud of what you have achieved . . . every one of you."

Now THAT is a man manager if ever there was one, unlike Batty Wattie who apparently kicks the scheidt out of any player who dares to step out of line, especially teenage boys.

#16 You epitomise a section of the rearangurz support that everyone despises, a myopic wee bigot.

LeTissier was a sublime talent who scored some of the most fantastic goals ever seen, why can you just not acknowledge that fact.

Every club the length and breadth of the land has their home grown hero and Southampton's was Matt. A player who would have graced most teams in the world but chose to spend the majority of his career, fair play to him.

You're right mate you can't compare them.

All that skill, class, technique and genius of Le Tissier against the scoring record of McCoist. It's a close one.

But Ally just shades it with his champions league scoring record, international record and the goals (sic) for Sunderland in England's top league.

Yep, he's simply the best.

#28 'Drive and ambition'

How about those who feel they have achieved by playing for their boyhood idols and do see green grass elsewhere, they feel they have achieved the ultimate and stay to savour their arrival?

Once you work to realise your ambition you are entitled to enjoy it........surely?

For thousands of us Paul McStay or Danny McGrain were players who could have graced many a top side in their prime, yet they were happy where they were.

Henrik Larsson was courted by Man Utd yet signed a 4 year contract to stay in Glasgow because he was happy, they were all ambitious but felt their 'lesser team' (compared to the supposed Euro giants) could help them achieve higher goals in the game.

26

Plonker,

Barring injury, McDonald will score a lot of goals for Celtic again this season, because of the confidence and ambition Le Tissier talks about. Although not brilliant, he works hard, he's quick and aware and is always looking to get in where he can do most damage. He'll have dry spells, but will always come back.

Le Tissier ? A career of steady anonymity with occasional flashes of brilliance. Not my kind of player. I like players who give value, consistently.

The spl trophy was barely back in the trophy room at CP when the laptoployalists were printing stuff about the 'huge pressure' McDonald was under to show that he wasn't a 'one season wonder'.

I'm still waiting for any of them to do the same thing about Cuellar.

And McDONALD had already had 2 great seasons in the splat Motherwell, and the question might have been more accurately put as whether he was a 'three season wonder'.

McDonald had a great season with Celtic. There was a 5 week period when he went off the boil, but even the best players in the world can lose their way mid season. Look at Ronaldinho.

McDonald has the perfect attitude and playing for the hoops is a dream come true for him.

Can't wait for the season to begin and so our march to 4 in a row....Walter Smith could be gone by Xmas,

If Rangers don't qualify for the CL, and Celtic are romping ahead in the league by Xmas, Walter will be gone.

48 - Sir Minty. Agree about McDonald but don't really care what the press have and haven't said - maybe I'm just immune after all these years.

As to four in a row, I think it will be tight again. Wattie won't change an almost successful, but ultimately tedious strategy, so they'll be hard to beat again (unless Cuellar - and McGregor for that matter ARE one season wonders). We'll see. McDonald will be important again and I expect him to produce.

Got to say that outwith Rangers, Matt LeTissier is one of a handful of players that I loved seeing on TV (never had the chance to see him live) Some of his goals were absolutely brilliant.
Would also throw in Cantona into that category. Brilliant player and finisher.
Another for me was Mark Hughes. One of the best strikers of a ball Ive seen for a while.

Patrick for some one who seems to know that the press in general are a bunch of wind up merchants who love to fabric stories.

You certainly surprise with you're responses about the articles.

Stories in the off season by football reporters are a cr+p shoot, out of 30 articles written by a journalist maybe one will have credence.

Rearrangers have been back in training and word is that Darcheville's €rse has expanded further and the fatty tissue that ripples around 'neath this hulking mass is becoming tidal.

Walter watches his hoofers and humpers plod around Murray Park acknowledging with weary resignation that this bunch of duffers carry his future as SS manager.

He casts an eye over at Bazza and wonders how many decent games he'll provide this season ....couldn't be much worse than last season, says Walter to himself.

Walter turns his head away and catches a glimpse of Weir and Dailly doing thirty yard sprints, and just manages to gag his vomit.

Walter reaches into his pocket for a hanky and holds it to his mouth . He steadies himself, regains his composure and looks up only to see Kenny Miller blast a penalty twenty yards over the bar.
Walter can take no more and wrenches violently, emptying out his breakfast onto the clipped murayfield lawn....

Richards probably will but any transfer between premier clubs will always be more. Great player tho!

Wouldnt argue with Ferdinand, i just hate him!

Fabregas i cant argue with, my only criticism would be a lack of width fom your midfield three.

101 - torres and ronaldo not natural "through the middle" strikers, similar to Henry.

Score a barra load coming in off the flanks where there is more space.

them and the full backs!

And no...I am not the man to help ReaRangers stop 4 in a row. The die is cast in that respect I am afraid!!

Who do fancy for the Celts then? Ronaldo or Torres? We all know big bluechip never fails to deliver eh? ;)

Seriously though Rangers are being criticsised for less than inspired signings but IMO it was players on a similar level to them that one the league for you lot last season.

All the talk was of the partnership of Donut and Brown when in fact had you not replaced them with Robson and Hartley you very probably would not have won the league.

He likes to use his head.

It's a cliche but Brown will be like a new signing this year.

Don't envy the past year the lad has had to endure.

Robson I agree was one of Scotlands top midfield players with United.

Point of fact Robson only got a regular run of matches with the tic due to injuries and suspensions. SNO and Donutti were regular selections before BR, by WGS.

When Robson and Hartley finally got a regular shot together in midfield with 8 matches to go they contributed a lot to the tics winning run, making WGS look like a genius.

Wouldnt argue there. Its hard enough to deal with Cancer in your family if its your Gran or grandpa. Your younger sister would be absolute hell.

personally would take torres first.Ronaldo had a better season, but I think the goals flattered him a bit and he is unlikely to be as prolific again.

He actually looks to have lost the ability to beat men out wide that he used to have. The double shuffle seems to have been rumbled.

Agree, Donati and Brown underperformed last season. and yes, the season turned when we moved to Hartley and Robson.

Both Donati and Brown started well and were considered good signings at the time, but both underperformed overall.

Strange that WGS signed Greveson and Donati whose performances in the Premiership and Seria A (2 of Europes top leagues) got them moves to Real Madrid and AC Milan (Euros 2 most successful clubs) and they have struggled for form in the SPL.

Maybe they have been written off too quickly?

Still - being able to sign players from Milan and Madrid (squad players albeit) is still a ton better than a 5 goals a season Burnley man!!

We bluenose supporters will come on and slag Brown because he plays for the tic.

What the lad went through emotionally last season was tough. He will bounce back.

Would have loved to have seen him at Ibrox.

What a ridiculous statement to make to compare two very expensive flops to a 20yr old has not yet played a game for us.
Especially given the only player you have signed couldnt hack it at Rochdale and has only ONE cap for NI. A country Lafferty has shown great promise for in his 16 caps so far. And he's 4 yrs younger.

Agreed on wee Scott Brown, it must have been a complete nighmare for the wee man.

It show how strong a character and it is to his credit that he tried to play on through such difficult circumstances at home.

I think he will be a star for us.

I do agree but in the real world thats what you need to do. Grit your teeth and get on with it. Footballers are no different from anyone else who go's through a bereavement.

Metzelder set to move to Celtic

09.07.2008 16:02 Uhr

Dortmund (dpa) - Since his transfer to Real Madrid at the beginning of last season, Christoph Metzelder has failed to establish himself in Spain. The defender is now set to leave Madrid. However, contrary to recent speculation of a move to Bayer Leverkusen, dpa understands that Scottish champions Celtic are the probable destination.

Celtic are currently in their training camp in Lennoxtown, where manager Gordon Strachan said on Monday that he was keen to add a defender to his squad. The Scottish champions have apparently found what they have been looking for in Madrid, and seem unconcerned that Metzelder has been unable to breakthrough into the first team at Real.

27-year-old Metzelder has turned down a move to Leverkusen. He played only 9 times in the Primera Division, appearing twice as a sub. He also played three games in the Champions League. He did not score any goals in his time with Real. Before moving to Spain, he played 126 games in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund, scoring twice.

It is as yet unclear whether Metzelder will be bought by Celtic, the 1967 European Cup winners, or just taken on loan. Real Madrid acquired Metzelder on a free transfer last summer.

OK, The 5 was a red herring.

By all means the Romanian looked reasonably impressive at the Euro's but the fact that he has never stayed more than a season at any club would worry me.

Not bothered about Metzelder. Have seen him loads of times and have never been impressed.

Have you seen much of the Watford boy Shittu than we are both being lnked with?
