Published Date: 28 August 2008
HEARTS' reported move for Celtic's Derek Riordan was dismissed today by the player's agent.

However, the Scotland internationalist has received loan offers from both Hibs and Leeds United.

Celtic are keen to recoup a fee for 25-year-old Riordan and are currently resisting any loan deals. Hearts have not made a formal offer but majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov is an admirer of the striker and would like to secure his services on a free transfer if he was able to negotiate his release from Parkhead.

Riordan is unhappy at the lack of first-team opportunities in Glasgow, where he moved from Hibs in June 2006 for £170,000, and wants to leave. But with only loan proposals from Easter Road and Elland Road forthcoming so far, his representative, Jim McArthur, expects him to stay with Celtic.

"Unfortunately for Derek, it looks like he will be at Celtic beyond the transfer window as the club are not receptive to loan deals and that's all that's been offered at the moment," McArthur told the Evening News.

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo is monitoring FBK Kaunas' Croatian forward Luka Anicic and Serbian striker Bojan Mamic, and admits his attack needs urgent attention following last night's penalty shootout defeat by Airdrie United in the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

"This is an area we must look at," he said. "We have a lot of options open and a lot of possibilities at the moment. We check any possibility we have but I don't want to comment too much on new players. We always have offers and names and we will see what we can do."

Hearts have also been credited with interest in Alan Gow, the Rangers forward, and Laszlo admitted he would be receptive to a possible loan deal for the 25-year-old. "We are always interested in good players. I think if we can get a player of this quality then why not?"

Laszlo was due to hold talks with Larry Kingston today after his reaction to being substituted last night. The Hungarian said he will not tolerate Kingston's outburst, which involved him angrily wagging his finger at the coach.

"He was unsatisfied with his performance and I think this is normal," said Laszlo. "He must accept you have opponents on the field and not every day is your best day but you cannot lose your face. We will talk today. You have some rules and we can't accept this."

What are you suggesting, Tommy? If you know something then come out and say it instead of coming across like a refugee from hibs.net

By the way, care to comment on the hibs story or are you just another one who would rather see Hearts lose than hibs win?

Larry Kingston needs a rocket up his back-side he hasn't kicked a ball this season , thinks he is better than he is .
Another defender/midfielder , we have about 39 of them already
We need a sniffer of a penalty box striker in fact Robbo would still be better than anything we have right now

If Larry Kingston had even half the effort & heart of Michael Stewart, Premiership teams would be knocking door down to sign him.

Unfortunately for him and us, he does not.

Drop him until he shows that he's ready to do the dirty work as well as his wee flicks & tricks.

I don't think this is the time for knee-jerk reactions.

I would happily take any striker as long as he is a goalscorer... Don't care where he comes from as long as he scores goals.

Awwww poor wee Serg' is still vesting a little too much interest in his bigger city rivals, never mind as long as we are out the Hobo Cup too then it makes hibs exit okay.

IRK is correct... definitely one of the bitter 'Rather see hearts lose than Hibs win' brigade.

Hearts announced his signing tomorrow, you would think barry anderson would at least try and keep up to speed.

#6 "tomorrow"??

Anyway, FFS. Another Kaunas loanee? Another defender/midfielder? Not good.
After Ruben was all but promised a run out last night, only to get nothing, this doesn't seem like good news to me. Even a striker from Kaunas would be preferable to a player in a position we're already overrun with.

Cowno loanees are one thing but why do we keep duplicating positions where we already have cover. Its clear Vald is still pulling strings on some level making the information we get propaganda and Csaba effectively a liar.

10

Who?,

What i find very worrying is the search for new defenders and midfielders. What hearts need are strikers- people who can put the ball in the net not target men. Its obvious where the problems are but nobody seems to be addressing them.

I have never understood why Miko, chesney, audry or zalukus are still at hearts. The club must be paying cow-nass something for their loan deals not to mention their salaries. The problem is that these guys are deadwood that needs to be moved on not kept on the payroll. I really don't understand how Zalukus can start as centre back over Karapidis, nor can i understand how Karapidis can play holding midfielder over jonnsson or ruben.

I would rather field members of the youth team than have to watch Miko running around the field like a headless chicken failing at basic tasks such as trapping a ball, a short pass or running past an opponent without falling over.

I'm still happy to give Csaba time as he can obviously spot a player. The improvement since he has taken over is very positive but he needs to be able to do his job.

What is strange is that Celtic are holding out to recoup some of the money paid for Riordan when they got him for pennies!!! Something is going on with him and the manager as they let Graveson walk for nothing and want Bobo to walk for nothing. Agreed these two are on huge wages however DR is also on a decent wage which would also reduce the wage bill. Very strange!

Anyone think it's ironic that the guy who said he was an amazing penalty taker missed his penalty last night?

Like most I believe Larry hasn't kicked a ball all season however it seems he gets subbed after 70 mins in almost every game. I think it's more to do with Larry not committing to the club long-term and Vlad is sticking his oar in until he does.

-just a thought
18

Who?,

28/08/2008 12:44:28
#17- A fair point the two of them came of better than the others in maroon. What you must remember is they were playing against Airdrie Utd not real madrid.

IMO if Miko and chesney haven't done in in the spl by now then they never will. Both have been in scotland since 2005 showing sporadic flashes of quality. Neither have done it on a consistant basis nor do they look like the have the ability to put in performances on a consistant basis. Hearts are paying cow-nass a few quid i'd imagine for their services not to mention their salaries. Surley the money could be better spent elsewhere?

Everybody knows its going to be a season of transition so why keep people who are not up to the job when you don't have to?

#11 WHO? Commented on another thread re as soon as HEARTS loose blame the liths

With all due respect were you at last nights game?

Of the 14 players involved i would put Zali/Miko/Chesney in the the top six performers. There was a lot worse than them last night.

Further i'm out on a limb here re KINGSTON:::could give more /do better but to compare him with Pinilla(#14) is OTT. Was better/contributed more than than Obua & Kari last night.

FFS we all know that unless we sign a goalscorer we will draw/loose games we should win(24 shots/9 corners/dozen or so cut backs from bye line should produce a goal)but massive OVER REACTION to last nights failure IMO.

21

Hearts00,

28/08/2008 12:50:53
Unless this new Polish player we have signed is a very competent RB and CH as well as a DM then it's a complete waste of time. We have at least three players who are more than competent in defensive midfield in Karipidis, Jonsson and Ruben (although I think we would all like to see Ruben play there).

We defnitely need to find a solution up front, but with Glen, Nade to get fitter and Tullberg there are hopefully some options. Mole and Larry just off him is clearly not the answer.

The major issue so far this season has been Larry Kingston - very very poor and already starting with the tantrums. Hopefully not another overpaid enigma who does not carry his weight or make any positive contribution.

Another concern has to be Obua. Is he going to be another player that arrives at Hearts with a huge reputation and delivers nothing. On the basis of last night, no real pace, no real dig in the tackle and not the great shooter, freekick taker, penalty taker we were promised. What is his best position and is he going to make a real impact????

Far too early for knee-jerk reactions and we have to give Csaba the season to see what he can do before judging if anything has changed on the park or off it.

#34 Agreed 100%, also think that Zal looks a completely different player this season, amazing what a wee bit of confidence can do for you, I actually feel more comfortable with him at the back than christophe at the moment!

As for Larry, agree with the folk that say he hasn't tried this season, undoubted ability but he needs to apply it. When he came off I thought he was saying to shabba "U put me up front! I cannae play up there! I'm a midfielder!" or words to that effect, well Larry, TOUGH!! You will play wherever shabba wants, and you had better run your heart out while you are there, you could ask mikey stewart to play anywhere on the park and you would get 100%, he may not like it but that won't stop him trying! Look at how many centre halfs get chucked up front, they can't play there but you will see them trying their hardest! Time to start earning your wages wee man!!

Not even gonna mention Obua!!! (woops, just did! ;-) lol)

Just a thought but if we are going to continue with what I believe looks like a 4-2-3-1 then it might be interesting to see miko play in the central role off the striker which kingston played last night. Think Kingston takes liberties in free role in not working hard enough and better suited playing deeper. I think Miko's work rate is ok with regard to closing down defenders and might benifit in a freer role. I could be wrong but did he not play in more central role under Robertson when he first came over and he looked ok.

I alluded to this earlier in the week folks, and I am convinced we will be looking no further than Vlads "empire" for new signings.
Of course there will be the odd exception to that, but in the main this is where we will be "strengthening" the squad from.
Sadly Obua does not look like the proof Vlad will need to accept Laszlo's judgement in the future.

Two old Hears players that might be considering signing given current need for players and likelyhood we wont be spending big.

1) Alan Maybury - is currently a free agent, always remember him as player with fire in his belly and a bit if drive something I thought we were lacking last night. Not sure how he performed at tail end of last season for Aberdeen?

2) Andy Kirk - has scored goals were ever he has been at 29 would have a bit of experience up front which could be of benifit. I think he has only recently signed for Dunfermline would could be stumbling block. But that is the type of penalty box player we need

Both maybe not our first choices but possibly an improvement on what we have

I'm happy for Laszlo to get plenty of time to get things right - at least a couple of seasons.

But while the useless "sporting director" botchup is hingin aroon like a bad smell, most of the "signings" are once again loanees from Kaunas for the wrong position and the team plays one up front at home, I am wondering if Laszlo is just being paid lots to look and sound the part but has no authority at all.

A British manager would never accept this. I hope Laszlo stamps his authority and soon. Then again, if he does, he'll be off to the salt mines and branded another traitor, killing the club every day he comes to work.

Lets not get carried away, the manager is entitled to bring in players to replace those he does not deem good enough. If Ruben and Jonnson were as good as people think we would not have finished 8th last season. We were over-run in midfield by average teams on a regular basis. Jonnson has potential to be a player but that time may not be now.

That said, we desperately need another forward by Monday!

Dont agree with the singling out Lithuanians - Miko was our only real threat last night. Chesney was the better of the two but his finishing and crossing are poor and I think Miko is now shading it ahead of him. As for Kingston, either try as hard as the others or go - he is no longer the star and he does not like it - no good to man or beast that attitude.

Just when will the Hearts regime realise that Kaunas players are lessening the quality at Tynecastle.

I keep hearing Shabba the Puppet going on about he wants to add quality and not quantity, well this is utter garbage as they have not been adding quality, they need to search further afield.

I have no confidence in Shabba or Romanov any longer, last night's result was a total disgrace, even a blind man would notice that they have been lacking fire power for quite some time!

Back to the storyline! I think Riordan has ability but there has to be a good reason (or reasons) why Strachan has marginalised him at Celtic Park.

So, even if there WAS any truth in the Hearts-Riordan link, I've a feeling it would be a potentially fraught deal for Hearts.

I suspect Riordan is too much of an anti-Hearts bigot to entertain the idea anyway.

In my view, Hearts should have serious look at Gow instead.

Good to see that you have given the new manager a fair crack of the whip before losing faith in him. I mean that's over 50 whole days he's been in the job now and you have written him off. I think it's about time you took over the manager’s office yourself. You are obviously verging on the omnipotent when it comes to all things football related. You would not stand for any of Mr Romanovs "nonsense" (he only owns the club and pays the wages after all) and would be out there signing top stars to take us back to the glory days of Burley.
Give the guy a chance for gods sake !!

In todays happenings around the world i do find you're statement about the Rangers chairman well below the belt,
uncalled for, myself personally will be puting in a protest to the EEN AND SCOTSMAN PUBLICATIONS,

You are obviously a minor on some sort of distraction drink, or worst.

Your comment is a disgrace. You should not be on this forum with your outrageous statements. Hearts does not need fans like you (if in fact you ARE a Hearts fan - I suspect you are not).

87. Disgusted by your comment on David Murray, ok Rangers and Celtic are fair game for a right good slagging from the Jambos but this, ... words fail me - if you are a Hearts fan, and I sincerely hope that you are not then I think an apology is in order, are you man enough to do that?

Isn't Zoom owned *0% by John Boyles BROTHER??..........and are we to draw conclusions like these to every one of the flood of airlines and similar ventures about to fail.Airlines all over the world are failing EVERY DAY right now, and the loss of this airline is a serious blow to private individuals and business in Scotland, and makes us even more dependent on the huge carriers who don't give a d4mn about the ordinary passenger.
However, don't let sense get in the way of your thoughtless rant!
