THE golfer Colin Montgomerie is to help build a cancer support centre in memory of his mother.
The new £3 million Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre will be the first project to be funded by the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation.
Montgomerie and his family established the foundation in tribute to his mother, who died of lung cancer in 1991.
The new centre will be based at Monklands Hospital in Lanarkshire. The county has a high incidence of cancer, with around 3,500 new diagnoses a year, according to Maggie's. Montgomerie, 45, said:
"The death of my mother from lung cancer was a devastating time for my family and me.
"I had always wanted to create a lasting legacy to my mother and am grateful to Maggie's for helping me realise this dream."
