NEW dad Anthony Edington rounded off a dream week with a superb bowling performance to help Heriot's defeat Capital rivals Watsonians by 80 runs in the SNCL Premier Division on Saturday.
Australian Edington took 4-24 with his right-arm seamers at Goldenacre as the visitors were dismissed for just 103 chasing the home side's total of 183-9.
The impressive personal performance came just six days after Edington's wife Nina gave birt
h to their son Brodie.
And the little man had been there for part of the day to see his dad's new-look side put in a clinical performance as 'Sonians were beaten for the second week in succession on their return to the top flight.
Edington said: "It has been a hectic week for me personally, but it was pleasing to round it off with a good team showing.
"We thought our total of 183 was pretty good on that wicket and the guys who opened the bowling (Ali Farooq and Cameron Farrell] bowled really well which made it a bit easier for myself and the others.
"We have a good team spirit this season and everyone contributed against Watsonians.
"If we work hard for each other we know we can compete at this level."
Australian professional Farrell had helped Heriot's get off to a decent start, hitting some nice shots on his way to 53 opening the batting. He departed after setting a good platform and opening partner Steve Knox continued the fine work done by the youngster.
The ex-Grange man played sensibly for 48 before Watsonians' own Aussie pro Andy Delmont captured him and skipper Gavin McIntyre in quick succession.
Some clever running and big hitting – most notably a huge six off left-armer Delmont – by Chris Goodard towards the end of the innings helped Heriot's get up to a useful total. Delmont was the pick of the bowlers for a depleted Watsonians' bowling attack that was missing Gordon Drummond, Steve Paige and Andy Learmonth. The 22-year-old took 3-38 while spinner Ross Paxton bowled a tidy spell.
Watsonians, who had only scored 87 against Grange the previous week, got their reply off to a bad start when opener Euan Stubbs was trapped lbw by an absolute beauty from Farrrell that kept low.
They ambled to 24-1 off ten overs, before Heriot's left-arm seamer Wasim Abbas took a wicket with his first ball for the club. It only got worse for 'Sonians as Edington came into the attack and the visitors were soon struggling 67-6.
At that point, young Ewan Chalmers was playing some nice shots, but once he was gone it was effectively game over. Euan Robertson did show some resistance with 26, but Ally Fleming's unfortunate run-out just about summed up their day.
For Heriot's, it was a great win in their first completed match of 2008 and McIntyre and his troops must be in a positive frame of mind ahead of Saturday's trip to table-toppers Carlton at Grange Loan.
