DAVID Beckham has admitted that revenge is on the agenda when England meet Croatia in Zagreb tomorrow.
Croatia famously edged England out of Euro 2008 with home and away wins in the qualifying campaign but while some in the England camp have been keen to insist that the slate is clean – with a new manager and a new campaign to focus on – Beckham concedes Slaven Bilic's side represent unfinished business.

Asked whether revenge would be a motivating factor, he said: "Totally. All players like to get their own back on a team who've beaten them and we'll be no different going to Croatia.

"The game comes early in the qualifying campaign, so it may not be decisive, but we have to go there and perform better than we did in the Euros.

"Passion is never a problem in any England team I've played in, but the results haven't always gone our way."

The former national skipper started on the bench against Andorra at the weekend but could be back in place of the exciting but raw Theo Walcott on the right of midfield. And, if he is selected, the Los Angeles Galaxy player knows overturning Bilic's side will be a tough ask.

"Croatia are a top side, as they proved against us in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign," he said.

"They have some quality players and their coach, Slaven Bilic, is a good motivator. But we have to make sure we go into this game believing we can beat them."

Beckham, meanwhile, also confirmed he has set his sights on maintaining his place in Fabio Capello's squad all the way to the 2010 finals in South Africa. "That's certainly my target. It's a massive challenge for me and I don't know whether or not I'll make it, but it's where I want to be. My age isn't an issue, as far as I'm concerned, and as long as I can stay fit, I believe I can help England get to the next World Cup and play a significant part in South Africa itself.

"I've always said I'll never retire from international football and that's still my position. Pulling on that shirt means so much to me."

Meanwhile, coach Fabio Capello insists England must play "without fear" against Croatia – after claiming he currently prefers to play away from Wembley because the players lack confidence in front of their own fans. The Italian can expect his side to enter a hostile atmosphere in the Maksimir Stadium tonight, but he says he has sensed a growing belief among his players during the ten days they have been together.

The former Real Madrid manager said: "I think we have worked very well for these nine, ten days and I see the players having a lot of confidence. They are getting better day by day and I am sure that tomorrow night we will be okay and we will perform.

"Of course, you have to pay big attention to the counter-attack of Croatia. I think they are also very dangerous from free-kicks and corners. This is one of their strong points.

"But we have to play with confidence and without fear and play very quickly. I understand the spirit of the group and the team and it is going up. We know Croatia never lose at home. Also, I think when England play at home at this moment, we don't play with a lot of confidence and I prefer to play away from England at this moment."

Capello has stressed the importance of experience and applying the team ethic against the technically gifted Croatians.

He said: "We have a lot of players with big experience. Seven of them played in the final of the Champions League last season and we have to play like a group, like a team."

Defender and vice-captain Rio Ferdinand has been passed fit to play after recovering from a neck injury which forced him out of the Andorran clash.

Dream on, Dave ... they're better than your lot as last time out amply demonstrated.

They are better than you because as well as having some outstanding individuals they play as a team which is more than England have managed for some years.

Must agree with you, England had the so called golden generation (Scholes, Becks Owen etc), some fine individual players, but as a collective team unit have failed to deliver over and over.

I think they will find it tough to win tonight against a quality side, and they struggled badly in their first match.

Croatia are at present better than England.

In the last two games they defeated England by scoring more goals than them.

Hence they are better than them.

England were better than them in Euro 04 as they beat Croatia then did they not ?

If Beckam plays Croatia will increase their chances of winning so a bit of an oxymoron this one.

Article should read, "Beckham yearns for Croatia revenge", although admits revenge will not come through his consistent poor efforts and retires.

So why did he move to LA?

Croatia are a far superior team to England as they play collectively and have the backing of their fans. England have it all to do and although they have some very good individuals in their side, noone seems to know how to play them together effectively or bring out their EPL form. 2-1 to Croatia.

Firstly, i wish the England guys the best of luck for tonight, secondly, all you to--ers on this thread that trash England,NEWS FLASH, we don't care! At least we have 3 points which is more than the scots do.

#10 guenevere,

Oh come on, I`m English but Addie has a point, we are a third rate team, and have been for the last four or five years, when was the last time you actually enjoyed watching England? the 5-1 over Germany springs to my mind.

Dont get you hopes up for tonight either, if the Andorra game is anything to go by Croatia could well be approaching double figures.

Its compulsary for the Scots to slag us off and "support whoever plays England", as it is compulsary for we English to laugh our sock off when the "tartan transvestites" trudge home after failing to get to another world cup or Euro competition, you see, thats what all good footballing neigbours should do, isnt that right Addie.

Actually I do not automatically slag England, I usually wish you well against any team except us and Brazil but just think what I said at post 3 is an accurate description of the current position.

#14 invictage,

I hate to admit my earlier comment about England but its true, and I agree with your comment, and I wish I was argueing with you but I cant, we are pants.

You must admit though, its pretty rare that a Scot will support England, but cheers for that anyway, I use to be the same with all the home sides, I found myself shouting for Wales on Saturday by instinct, but how many Welsh would cheer for England?? Not many.
14

guenevere,

10/09/2008 15:29:07
13. My point of view is that we should stop all this separatism,if it wasn't for the scots we would have a Great Britain team, the best players from all 4 nations,as we do not,i ofcourse will support England.
The problem with the English team is that they get to much money, they know it doesnt matter if they win, lose,or draw they will get paid,a better way would be: A win full pay, a draw half pay if they loose no pay, they would soon buck their ideas up!

You are correct it is rare but that can in some way be explained by the attitude adopted by your press, the tabloids in particular, who constantly hail you lot as potential world cup winners etc. In the end they usually just p#ss off everyone else who gets sick listening to them.

I support you because I have lived down here for a while and consider myself to be Scottish and British. I have no time for the EU and will never be European in any circumstances so will obviously favour the brits in all sports ( except Man Utd ).

The Brazil thing is just a favouritism after all they are recognised as the team to watch for entertainment.
16

guenevere,

10/09/2008 16:11:40
17. Then,do you support a GB team?
17

invictager,

Kent 10/09/2008 16:35:57
Only in competitions where there are no individual teams like the olympics.

As I said Scottish and British not rather than.

The problem with a GB team is who would be in charge. The English as the biggest part of Britain would expect to have most of the influence and that would never work.
eg if the manager chose, say Craig Gordon and he made an error the English press would murder him despite it probably being a correct decision.

To be honest you do not need the other two countries as you have the players to make a great side but I go back to my original point that you do not have a good TEAM.

19. With the greatest respect,we have a better team than Scotland, at least we won our opening game. Despite what most of the posters on this thread have said,we will do England proud tonight.
20

guenevere,

10/09/2008 16:50:09
19. "who would be in charge" that is pretty well obvious, Capello.
21

#17 Invictager,

I think you are right about the media building expectations, but they are equally brutal when, as usual, we play badly, who could forget Swedes 2-0 Turnips with Graham Taylor`s head fashioned like a Turnip in the Sun.

I dont know if you watch Sunday Soccer suplement on a Sunday morning, where four member of the press give an opinion on all thing football, and are rightly scathing of England performances.

The fan base is also coming to terms with the inept performances, any delusions we had are about to evaporate, probably as I speak.
So when you Scots slag our team off, not on here of course, and thank you for that, there are alot of Englishmen who would agree with you, secretly.
22

invictager,

Kent 10/09/2008 19:28:22
#21
I have no argument with that but do you have a better team than Croatia was the actual question.

#22
You just prove my point with that assumption

#23
Unfortunately I am a shift worker and dont have many Sunday mornings off so have seen very litle of that programme.

I think individually you are capable of beating Croatia but will need to perform as a team which you did not do under Sven ( possibly the most overrated manager you ever had.) If Croatia have a good day they are a formidable side, especially at home.
23

invictager,

Kent 10/09/2008 21:23:55
Looks like the humble pie will be coming out. Finally a great team performance.
24

Addie,

10/09/2008 21:55:51
#23 Peter, although I cant profess to be an England fan, its the press who I dislike not the actual team. Fair play though it was a great result and humble pie is being eaten.
25

An Englishman Abroad,

Although I have lived in Scotland for 23 years and have a Scottish wife (as well as three Scottish children) I will always be proud of my Country (as I will bring up my children to be proud of theirs). Never more so than tonight! At last potential has been realised and a decent start has been made.
We are not there yet but we are on our way. Wonder if Steve McLaren was watching?
26

guenevere,

10/09/2008 22:16:55
24 The answer to your question is YES,AND TO ALL THOSE WHO DISRESPECTED THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL TEAM,HOW LOW CAN YOU GROVEL,I said England would do the English nation proud and they did, well done Theo you did England proud, and to all the back stabbing twaters out there,go forth and multiply.
27

Brave of you to wait until you had already won to answer the question though.

What was there to respect before tonight? Had I claimed a team that beats Andorra 2-0 were superb then you would have laughed.

You may be correct about doing the English nation proud but as you may have noticed you are posting on the Scotsman where most( not me as I said earlier) dont give a to#s.
28

invictager,

Kent 10/09/2008 22:33:03
To Peter and the other sensible Englishmen. Well done.
