Hearts signed off at Tynecastle for another season by clinching third place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
Assured of a berth in next season's Europa League before a ball had even been kicked, following Aberdeen's defeat at Rangers, buoyant Hearts surged at their opponents from the off.

Lee Wallace grabbed an impressive opener after 11 minutes – only h
is second goal of the season – to end the club's four-game drought.

Bruno Aguiar then netted after 26 minutes to effectively end the contest, before Eggert Jonsson's late penalty sealed only Hearts' second win in nine matches.

Former Hearts manager Craig Levein has enjoyed happier afternoons in Edinburgh and his fourth-placed Taysiders will still require a point next weekend to guarantee their own European spot.

Marius Zaliukas dropped out through suspension for Csaba Laszlo's side, along with injured Laryea Kingston.

Christos Karipidis and Ruben Palazuelos were restored while Andrew Driver remained absent.

United pair Sean Dillon and David Goodwillie came in for Mihael Kovacevic and Danny Swanson.

Given Hearts' European qualification, there was a feel-good factor around the stadium and it was almost helped by an early goal from the hosts.

Wallace's fine run and cross down the left picked out Aguiar whose sharp eight-yard shot was straight at goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska.

Laszlo's team appeared in the mood and continued their lively opening when Lee Wilkie blocked a Calum Elliot effort, before David Obua saw a shot deflected wide from Palazuelos' centre.

But a deserved breakthrough was only delayed until the 11th minute. Elliot held the ball up superbly in the penalty area and the on-rushing Wallace burst through to collect and strike a sweet finish across Zaluska.

United, backed by a strong away support, replied when Marian Kello turned Goodwillie's strike around the post, before Prince Buaben flashed a shot wide from distance.

But Hearts were soon back on the front foot and Aguiar curled a dipping free-kick over the bar.

United claimed for a penalty on 25 minutes after Goodwillie went down just inside the area under pressure from Jonsson, but referee Brian Winter was unmoved and instead spoke to the young striker.

Within seconds, Laszlo's men had rushed up the park to net their second. Elliot did well on the right to cut back for Aguiar who clipped the ball beyond Zaluska at the near post for his seventh of the season.
David Robertson fired over as United sought a foothold in the game, before another failed penalty claim on 35 minutes again riled the Tangerines.

Francisco Sandaza went down trying to turn Karipidis, but Winter instead cautioned the Spaniard for diving.

Levein's charges were in need of an early reply after the interval, but Hearts appeared content to stay compact and frustrate them.

The first opportunity of the half fell to Elliot whose close-range overhead kick was parried by Zaluska.

Craig Conway's 55th-minute free-kick was deflected wide by Jonsson, but United were generally struggling for openings and Palazuelos was next to threaten for Hearts from long range.

Levein made a double change to spark more urgency from his side just after the hour mark. Andis Shala came on for Sandaza and Swanson for Robertson.

But the match became a scrappy affair as Hearts held on to their advantage, with Garry Kenneth picking up a booking for his obvious displeasure at proceedings.

Elliot had a glorious chance to increase the home side's lead on 70 minutes but his volley soared over.

As United pushed more players forward, Kello did well to turn away a dangerous Kenneth cross before Morgaro Gomis struck a 25-yard drive straight at the goalkeeper.

However, it was game over for the visitors 11 minutes from time.
Elliot was pushed over by Kenneth in the box and Jonsson stroked home the spot-kick. Home substitute Christian Nade could have even added further gloss to the scoreline late on, but blasted high and wide.

Utd now have to avoid defeat if they want to secure Europe - this is a good result for celtic.

Agreed. Rangers should have put 6 past them on wednesday. Celtic I fancy to beat them tomorrow.

I don't think this will be won on GD, I think it will be Celtic's by a couple of points.

Interesting last games thinking Hearts and the hobbits will both draw with the tics leaving the title at Ipox.

Great performance, Hearts were to strong for Utd and finished the season at Tynecastle in style , Aguair and Karipidis were outstanding so was our keeper Kello surely they won't let him go. Obua well hopefully the new season will see a better player, don't think Nade will be at Tynecastle next season.

C'mon the Gorgie !!

Hearts proved today that they have the bottle to finish the job - Walter Smith must wish his side had the same level of commitment when it needed - Hearts in the Europa Cup, Celtic the League Champions and Rangers probable Scottish Cup winners -
Now all the SPL need to do is change the league so that each team plays each other twice per season -

Hearts are deservedly in Europe next season.

Utd also deserve Europe but first they have to take something at next week's game.

I expect they will come out of the traps flying against Rangers. Anything other than their best next week could see Aberdeen pip them.

TM -

Dundee United will definately come out the traps fast. Rangers have no chance next week, they just dont have the bottle for it - Their team is as spineless as their manager! No grit, no fight, no spirit -
Tell you another thing, Celtic will bury Hibs tomorrow - Hearts could go to Celtic Park and win because they are good enough to do so, but I can't see Celtic losing this one.
They are champions elect, 5 in a row and deserved winners. They have the bottle as do Hearts as we seen today.

41 I agree Oysters at The Ritz is a bit over rated.

Had fish and chips at The Ivy a few weeks ago - was great but expensive even though I wasn't paying.

Best fish and chips I ever had was in Cleethorpes in The Kingsland Hotel.
40

Roscoe P Coltrane,

16/05/2009 22:28:03
I've got family connections in Liverpool so not allowed to say anything bad about the Hollies, even if I do think it!

You've got to wonder though if ANY of the bands that are about at the moment will still be talked about 40 years later as great bands. Simon effing Cowell has a great deal to answer for.
41

The Kids Are Alright,

16/05/2009 22:32:12
The Hollies could knock oot a good tune, even without the chips.

Bus Stop is an all time classic.

Only ones who might be talked about in 40 years will be the likes of U2 and Oasis - but they are hardly today's bands are they?

The Kaiser Chiefs are just like the clash but not as good, the Killers are not bad but not great, Keane are not bad but again not great.

I doubt we'll see the likes of The Beatles, the Stones etc ever again.

I'm Alive...great opening number.

The Hollies....Crosby, Stills, Nash

That harmony vocal created in the UK.
45

Roscoe P Coltrane,

16/05/2009 22:42:16
CSN were better with Y!

I'll give you U2 and Oasis, but they've both been around for years, as you alluded to. Over the last, say, five years or so, since the advent of Pop Idol etc, the music industry has realised it's a lot easier to make a quick buck and a number one from a singer who's had weeks and weeks of cross-media coverage, not to mention the revenue streams from the phone lines, and then drop them after one half-baked album and then do it all again rather than actually invest in and nurture talent over a long period.

But Tim - Keane? Bl**dy Keane? Bed-wetting music. About as rock 'n' roll as a hand-knitted tea cosy. They took the worst bits of Coldplay and forgot the good bits. IMHO obviously!

Just can't bring myself to trust a band without guitars in.......
46

Roscoe P Coltrane,

Saw the Jam in Falkirk (had mu visa and everything to go there), in c. 1973.

Thought they were a good band then.

Weller matured and wrote several classics.

Ever Changing Moods, one of the best?
51

Roscoe P Coltrane,

Sultans of Swing was one of the first tunes I ever learned! Big fan of the Jam too, brilliant power-pop stuff but with a message as well. Loved Stanley Road, time and place and all that.

Bit leftfield, but did you ever listen to the album Mark Knopfler did with Chet Atkins? Not the biggest fan of Country, but that was a fantastic album.

Anyway, this is supposed to be about football, so I'm off. Have a good one all.

Can anyone confirm how the tax mans inspection is going at Tynecastle?

Do you think that they have asked Hearts for details of the additional 45 staff that are registered on their payroll?NI numbers tax returns identification verification etc.

Do you think that they will be asking for chapter and verse of the Bednar deal and the whereabouts of the interest on the Gordon deal?

Do you think that capital gains tax will be sought on some of the deals that Romanov has made with Hearts money?

These are the only results that matter.

I wonder if it's down to pure coincidence that none of our 'strikers' contributed to our goals, but then again, who cares in these circumstances?

Think we should have qualified for the Europa League by the Fair Play Award a lond time ago.;o)
