READING have signed striker Noel Hunt from Dundee United after the Tannadice club accepted an improved bid.
The 25-year-old has secured a three-year contract with the Coca-Cola Championship side after United agreed an undisclosed fee thought to be around £600,000.

The Irishman will join his new team-mates, including brother Stephen, in Sweden today.

Hunt, who joined United for £50,000 from Dunfermline in 2006, scored 18 goals last season. He was due to reach the end of his contract next summer and had told United manager Craig Levein he wanted to move south.

Levein had already strengthened his forward line with the loan signing of Cardiff's Warren Feeney and the capture of Valencia striker Francesco Sandaza.

After a third Reading bid proved too good to resist, Levein said: "This transfer represents an excellent deal for Dundee United and helps bring further financial stability to the club.

"Following an initial inquiry last season, we were aware that Reading might make a formal offer before the close of this transfer window and made plans accordingly.

"We knew that a formal offer would require serious consideration and we knew we had to plan to replace Noel before it became too late to do so.

"I'm delighted therefore that two strikers have already been brought in as highly capable replacements and that we will not be short of quality strikers as a result of this transfer going through at this stage.

"It may also be that I can now perhaps look at strengthening the squad further, if necessary, as a result of this transfer.

"The move is also an excellent opportunity for Noel and we couldn't stand in his way."

Reading manager Steve Coppell was pleased to land a player he has tracked for years.

Coppell, who saw forward Dave Kitson leave for Stoke in a £5.5million switch last week, believes Hunt's versatility will prove to be an asset. "He's a player we have known about for quite a while, obviously with the family connection," said Coppell.

"He is flexible, he can play across the line up front, and like Stephen, he's a whole-hearted player. He led the line on a number of occasions last year."

Very doubtful your team would be interested.

£600,000 is not good money. he deserve 1M~1.5M. I hope If he leave..January is right time..

anyway Levein back Mark De Vries. and Derek Riordan or Alan Gow. Hope.

Celtic young boy Paul McGowan is another good target.

Steven Hunt is well over rated. It is "daft" for you suggest otherwise. He is no better than the current midfielders we have. He is much like Steven Davis in that regard, a player you cannot afford.

That is your opinion. You will never know because your team would never sign him.

Your team would probably sign the likes of Donatti, Sno, Hartely and Robson, but never Hunt. Why is that?

Actually, this ISN'T an Old Firm thread.

It's a Dundee United thread which, once again and like almost every other football thread that appears on this site, has been hijacked and ruined by the bigoted ramblings of the one-shoed minks and their cheating knuckle-dragging comrades from Castle Greyskull.

Why don't you lot - ALL of you lot - just **** off?

Nice try. (joined 1912!). ROI players are fewer than Catholics at Rfc with only Stevenson making it, just and no more. In this "modern" age name me one? Hunt would have no chance at all, and that goes for his brother too.

Good bit of business by Levein. Hunt will be missed but they have brought in Feeney and the Spanish lad both have hit the net in friendlies.

Hunt would have walked for nothing at the end of the season, United end up with 550k profit on the player.

£600K for Hunt seems a bit of a bargain to me. Always thought he was most threatening striker Rangers played against in Scotland other than probably McDonald. Not displeased to see him go.

#12 & #14 - Typically peasant, dhim statements from Jerrymanders who like most of them on here try to engender pseudo religious slants to practically any story in orer to illicit desired response. They can proclaim ,with woefully misplaced moral paiety, that we're Scotlands shame - they're just the same as those they so profess to dislike but are too thick to see the double standards.

Thanks Noel.
Go maire tú do shaol nua i gReading!

A good piece of business by United, as if Reading get back to the Prem, and Hunt is capped at full level by Ireland then the fee jumps up to £1 million.

Stephen Thompson will use some of the money to reduce club debt, but Hunts salary release will enable Craig Levein to bring in a winger.
That winger may well have been Paddy McCourt as United were keen, but he chose badly and will join Riordan and Killen in the plastic stiffs.

I have faith that Craig Levein will find that player.

Why are loads of posts calling the lad 'Steven' Hunt. His name is Noel, or am I missing something? In any case he's left and DU semmed to have done well financially out of him. Just a pity the lure of being in the reserves in 'the most fantastic and bestest' league in the world was too much for him.

Yep, with a year left on his contract and Noel making it clear he wanted to try his luck down south, £600k is a very good deal. Robson and Hunt cost a combined £100k and we've made £1.5m profit on them - nice work in this day and age.

Next players to coin us huge profits - wee Morgaro and Danny Swanson.

Good on Noel, and although it's a shame to see him go because he was a good player and such a hard worker for the team, I'm glad he's got what he wanted and United got a reasonable amount of cash.

It's unusual these days for supporters to accept some of their players moving on to better things, but Noel will only get wished good luck, as he gave his all.

Thankfully puts an end to the disgraceful sectarian garbage he was subjected to last year too! Some "Scottish" supporters should be ashamed of themselves, absolutely pathetic...

#27 Stoobing - stop trying to tout our players. Both Gomis and Swanson could play for us for a good few years yet and I'd be looking to get them on another contract after this one before cashing in on them. Agreed if they continue to progress then we will inevitably lose them but no need in encouraging that day to come soon.

Good luck Noel, you've done yourself and United proud.

Great move for Noel going to a better League with actual filled stadiums for nearly every game. He has been one of the players thats been backbone for Utd success last season with his excellent play and goals, that is apart from Leveins tactics of course. I would have loved to see him in a Hearts strip obv that wouldnt happen.

Good luck to the lad in the rest of his career.

Ive been really impressed with Utd, Well and Falkirk last season and i only hope Hearts and Hibs get back up there and we see a better SPL thats been missed and declined for years with constant rape with the Ugly sisters.

15# is that the reason the Ugly sisters threads have no comments aye?

Deadpan - not touting them for sale, more highlighting their talent. Think Swanson could have a huge season this year, esp if Feeney and Sandaza are the starting strikers. Will need a wee buzzbomb racing around them.

Need to be realistic though - Levein is an outstanding judge of talent. The more he's proved right, the more money we'll pick up in transfers.

Delighted for Noel Hunt – he will do well at Reading.

I thought Celtic should have paid the small money for him because he's a lot more mobile than JVoH and tougher than Samaras and would have given us another (and cheap) option to play with McDonald. I recall him scoring with a brilliant chip against us when with the Pars in a game we went on to win 1-4.

As for the Celtic fan who wouldn't have his brother Stephen at CP, all I can say is that I don't share your opinion, mhate. Stephen is a skillful terrier of a player – the player I thought we'd signed in Scott Brown.

Its Stephen not Steven.

Levein likes the Irish market, and shall look there again. If we can get another quality midfielder/winger, it'll be better than last year - a cup at least!
