Ice hockey: City side clip Flyers' wings

EDINBURGH Capitals edged a 12-goal thriller with Fife Flyers in the FFDR Cup at Murrayfield last night, writes NIGEL DUNCAN.

The home side won 7-5 as Fife slipped to their second defeat in three games in the inaugural ice hockey competition.

Fife led 1-0 early in the game but Capitals, who iced Doug Christiansen, their American-born director of coaching, and his countryman, defenceman Joe Dustin, were 2-1 ahead at the end of the opening period and three quick goals stretched the home side's lead to 5-1.

Fife fought back to be 6-5 behind with 90 seconds remaining and withdrew their goaltender to give them six skaters but Capitals netted an empty net goal.

Steven Lynch, Fife's assistant coach and a former Capitals hit-man, said: "The three quick goals meant we were chasing the game but we played well.

"They have players who play in the Elite League which is a higher level and they punished our mistakes but we fought hard and came through without any injuries."
