(Elfsborg win 4-0 on aggregate)

Hibs' faint hopes of making further progress in the InterToto Cup came to an end in the Boras Arena this afternoon as Swedish side IF Elfsborg, already enjoying a two-goal lead from the first leg in Edinburgh, completed the job on home soil.

A deflected goal from Mathias Floren after 20 minutes killed off any chance of what would have been a remarkable comeback by Mixu Paatelainen's players who again had to concede second best to a slick, well-organised and disciplined Elfsborg outfit.

And to emphasise the gulf between the sides Emir Bajrami, scorer of the first goal at Easter Road, hammered home a spectacular and unstoppable shot from 22 yards which flew beyond Hibs goalkeeper Andy McNeil and into the top left-hand corner 11 minutes from time.

As promised, Hibs boss Paatelainen (pictured below) made four changes to the side which had gone down 2-0 to the Swedes six days ago, the previously announced replacement of Yves Ma-Kalambay in goal by McNeil brought up to four as Ross Chisholm, Colin Nish and Alan O'Brien joined the starting line-up at the expense of Brian Kerr, John Rankin and Filipe Morais.

For their part Elfsborg made one change, Andreas Augustsson, the scorer of the second goal at Easter Road, being replaced by Stefan Ishizaki having picked up an ankle injury during his side's 1-0 defeat by Gefle in midweek, their first setback at home this season.

Elfsborg began clearly determined to kill off any hope of a Hibs comeback, employing a multi-ball system to ensure there was no break in play as they sought to put Paatelainen's side under early pressure, Anders Svensson fizzing a shot just over before Ishizaki fired a drive into the side-netting.

The Swedes should have taken the lead after just 11 minutes when McNeil's first touch from a Rob Jones passback was heavy, the goalkeeper placing the ball into the path of striker Denni Avdic who took it round the stranded youngster but was dispossessed by a great challenge from Hibs' towering skipper as he prepared to pull the trigger with the goal gaping.

Having survived that scare Hibs went on to enjoy their best spell of the match, O'Brien providing a rare glimpse of his blistering pace to leave Johan Karlsson trailing in his wake only for Elfsborg goalkeeper Johan Wiland to claw away his rising shot.

Teddy Lucic was forced into a terrific block by the effervescent Dean Shiels but, just as the home fans in the sparsely populated Boras Arena were becoming a touch nervous, Elfsborg got the goal they were seeking in the 20th minute and, just like their second goal in Edinburgh, it owed a lot to luck as Mathias Floren's shot took a wicked deflection off Chris Hogg.

McNeil made a despairing effort to get to the ball but it appeared to take a strange bounce off the plastic pitch and into the corner of the net.

McNeil kept Hibs in the game if not the tie as he denied Avdic by pushing his nearpost shot behind before Shiels' corner eluded everyone but Jones at the back post but, caught unawares, he was unable to do anything but let the ball bounce off his midriff and wide.

Despite the loss of that goal, Hibs were still in the same position as they started the game at half-time, needing to score three goals to progress.

But to do so in just 45 minutes was a tall order against a side which, up to this point, had conceded just one at home all season.

O'Brien, however, embarked on a lung-bursting 70-yard run before delivering an inviting cross which Wiland was happy to clutch before Steven Fletcher (pictured top) could get on the end of it.

Colin Nish should have pulled one back for Hibs in the 58th minute when Ross Chisholm's chip found him all alone deep inside the Elfsborg penalty area. The striker chested the ball down only to drill a low shot beyond both Wiland and the far post.

In all truth, Mathias Floren's goal had turned the match into little more than a training exercise for both sides, Elfsborg content with their lead while Hibs watched the clocks above either end slowly tick off the minutes to the final whistle.

But Bajrami brought the home crowd to life again 11 minutes from time with that stunning shot.

IF Elfsborg: Wiland, Karlsson, Lucic, Andersson, M Floren, A Svensson, Danielsson, Ishizaki (J Floren 65), Mobaeck (Berglund 40), Bajrami, Avdic (Kurbegovic 82). Subs not used: Hassan, Sjoberg, Nordmark.

Hibs: McNeil, Van Zanten, Hogg, Jones, Hanlon, Shiels (Stevenson 84), Murray, Chisholm (Rankin 63), O'Brien, Nish (Campbell 84), Fletcher. Subs not used: Ma-Kalambay, Canning, Kerr, Morais.

Referee: Marijo Strahonja (Croatia).

Hibs have been crying out for a keeper for three or four years now, but Hibs fans have been too obsessed with Hearts to notice that every successful team starts at the back.

Hibs have a board that has used the turmoil at Hearts to excuse themselves from buying players and strengthening. They invented a non-existent conveyor belt of youth talent to make false promises that new young players were waiting in line to take over from Riorden, Brown, Thomson, etc.

And Hibees have lapped it all up, ignoring the fact that when Mowbray was at the club with the best crop of young players seen in Scotland for a while, the bpard failed to back him by letting him buy experienced layers to balance the team out. They then flogged all the players, when they could have at least kept Boozy and Sproule and one of Brown, Murphy, Whittaker and Thomson.

The result is that, three or so years ago when Hearts were in turmoil, the OF were weak, and even Dundee Utd, Aberdeen and M'well were no great shakes, HIbs blew an amazing chance to make progress - all because Hibs fans failed to put pressure on the board due to their obsession with tynecastle.

And now Motherwell, Aberdeen and D Utd have all strengthened and Hibs are far, far, far weaker. Even Hearts could turn the corner at any time.

Bleak days for Hibs. Long way from the gloats of flair, best run team in Scotland, the real 3rd force, etc, etc. Lesson for Hibs fans - focus on your own team.

Don't panic Mr Mannering!

Most Hibs fans won't panic. But hopefully the performance of the team as a whole will show Mixu and also the board that rconstruction is necessary in certain areas of the side - notably the midfield and the striking department.

I know it's early doors but this doesn't look too good. I'm not going to accept all this "no friendlies to warm up with", "lack of fitness", "players not sharp enough" stuff.

They've had a shorter than normal break so why the hell can't they still string a few passes together and find each other with passes crossfield? Surely you don't forget to do the basics after a month's break? If I did that with job after my summer holidays I'd be out the door pronto and quickly replaced. Does the same not apply here or are we really too tight to spend some money?

#25 mrhibs07, i wouldn't call you a serial poster and i don't know when you were last on the hearts stories. all i know is you have bee there in the past, having a good laugh.

lots of hearts fans are going to have a good laugh about hibs now, just got to accept it otherwise it's hypocritical.

hearts situation and hibs getting horsed oot the intertoto are hardly the same thing but you've got to understand that hearts fans will gleefully take the opportunity to have a pop.

i've had mine now and i don't want to be hypocritical either so i'll stop.

Farmer in meeting with Anne Summers chief executive on Monday to transfer lease of sticklebrick arena as there aren't enough bricks that can be sold for the last stand (pipe dream) and with dropping land values feels it's time to cash in.

The hobo board want to give ER to property developers and make slightly more each but TF feels the pervs need an Anne Summers handy for all the bondage gear & gimp masks!!

OK Rod, you've learned lesson one of making it in business, and learned it pretty well - Make sure you a do not have bigger debt than can be paid off by what you manufacture - (You've still to learn this Vlad.)Now for lesson two! If you sell off all your production line to actually succeed at lesson one then you'll be in debt again pretty quickly unless you buy a new production line.
What do you reckon? Are you up to learning that lesson? You have a clean slate now with lots of customers ready to buy. Do you have the business acumen to make the adjustment from saving to investment? No? Then hand on to someone who will.
The customers won't wait indefinitely
Finally, to the Scotsman IT boys. Using an apostrophe in substitute for "do not" or "cannot" does not mean there is a swear word intended. Perhaps you guys should get more education before trying to implement regular expressions.

These last 2 results are nothing short of an utter disgrace to a team of our stature and history, and such an accurate reflection of all that's been rotten at ER for a good long while.
There's an awful lot of blinkered and deluded Hibs' fans out there if they think there's no cause for sounding the alarm just yet.
Believe me, we're in deep doos at the moment - possibly throat level - and sinking fast.
I suspect it wont be too long before we see Mixu jump ship, and he'll go for the same reasons Collins did, I feel.

Not any kind of excuse, we got beat far and square but i think we are all allowed to wonder that...

Your post is absolute rubbish. Its a FACT that Hibernian, or at least the holding company, owns the training ground. Have you forgotten that Tom Farmer's company owns all the voting shares and that your shares, like mine, are worthless. These shares were given to those who invested in the former company by Farmer as a supporters' token.

So if Tom Farmer owns the club, which is part of the holding company, within the holding company he owns the training ground and Easter Road and Hibernian. So, taking all three together means that they are part of the same entity.

Too much sangia maybe?

Gorgiegoalmachine. You can spout all the statistics you want but it doesn't even begin to cover up the one thing that nobody could argue with: It takes a special kind of ignorant low-life to bring the Hearts heroes of World War 1 into the rants you've been making. The huge majority of Hearts supporters must think you're a disgrace.

private prat oh sorry i mean pike i think you will find that all hearts supporters are proud of macraes battalion being a serving soldier i can imagine how hard it must have been trying to rebuild the team after the war not that you scumbags wi yer casuals and yer tricolours would know about loyalty to scotland and the uk

#61.

Funny that, I also have the hibs accounts in front of me. So you'll be able to back up your wild and fantasical accusations with what exactly? Name the landowner at the training ground, give us your own name so we can check you on the list of shareholders. Tell me exactly how much debt we have. Can't, can you, eh Bily Liar?

Not difficult really. Hmmmmm..... because from where I'm standing (and from what I'm reading), you're talking pure p*sh.

Fantasist.

#61 Solemio etc

Just to demonstrate your lack of credibility, this is an extract of what you wrote on a Hearts story.

'As for our new manager he has said nowt wrong, speaks better English than most of the morons that come on here, probably knows more about football that tht same lot and I for one(with my 5 pid for season tickets and shareholding) will let the man get on with the job.
As for The Hibernians, good luck today but I did put 200 € on the otra team last week at evens.Adios'

Wind-up over son!
