Published Date: 27 June 2008
TURKEY striker Colin Kazim-Richards accused Germany of failing to adhere to the spirit of the game following his side's heartbreaking late defeat in the Euro 2008 semi-finals.
Turkey produced a superb performance in their first European Championship last-four appearance but ended up tumbling out of the tournament following a 3-2 defeat at St Jakob-Park in Basel.

Despite winning plaudits for their display, Turkey were le
ft with a bitter taste due to Philipp Lahm's 90th-minute match-winning strike for Germany.

That goal came after the London-born Kazim-Richards had gone down injured near the halfway line, and the Fenerbahce striker feels Germany should have put the ball out of play.

"I personally think they (Germany) will be a little bit upset with the goal that won the game for them," said Kazim-Richards after the match. "This whole tournament has been based around fair play and I think you saw that we did it (put the ball out) a couple of times, we've done it throughout the tournament. Although I can't say that if I was in the same position I would have done the same thing, but it would've needed to be more like a screamer – he (Lahm) had to make a pass before scoring, so it's a bit upsetting," added Kazim-Richards, who insists he was genuinely injured.

"I'm not the sort of guy to stay down if it's not something serious, I got subbed off and would've played on if I was all right," he said.

Lahm, who had been given a torrid time by Kazim-Richards and his team-mates in the first half, was reluctant to talk about the incident after the game, but pointed out he also had reason for complaint.

At the start of the second half he was blatantly brought down with the only apparent debate being whether the foul occurred inside the Turkey area or not, but Swiss referee Massimo Busacca stunned the German camp by giving nothing. Lahm said: "You can always argue about that at full-time but I was fouled close to the penalty box before, whether inside or outside I don't know. I don't want to talk about it (the late incident)."

Turkey had reached the semi-finals on the back of three thrilling matches in which they fought back from deficits to win right at the death in each one.

Those wins did not come without cost though, as injuries and suspensions robbed Turkey coach Fatih Terim of a host of players for the semi-final against Germany.

The makeshift Turkey side did their nation proud with a hugely impressive performance, but while he believes his side were the better of the two, Kazim-Richards felt the Germans had that little bit of extra know-how at the end of the game. "In the last couple of games the teams have been better than us, they've played better, and we won," he said.

"Today we were better and we lost, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Turkish player, I'm saying that because I saw the stats and our stats were much better.

"They (Germany) are very experienced, and they were more experienced than some of the Turkey players."

Turkey's next major assignment will be the World Cup qualifiers. They begin their Group 5 campaign away to Armenia on 6 September.

While Turkey's future looks bright, it also looks likely to be without the guiding hand of coach Fatih Terim who will now return to club management.

The former AC Milan and Galatasaray coach – nicknamed 'The Emperor' in Turkey – feels his players should hold their heads up high for what they achieved in the tournament, and in particular against Germany,

"I said I was proud of them, told them not to feel bad," said the 54-year-old. "These players have been here to serve their country, what they did was impressive and I wished them a lot of success for future."

After the undignified and ignominious words and actions of Rangers FC and its followers towards the end of last season, I have had my fill of bad losers.

There is no way Germany, in possession with a minute to play, should have kicked the ball out. There is so much play-acting in Football nowadays, who is to decide who is faking injury to scupper a last minute attack by the opposition? It is up to the referee to stop play if he feels the injured party may be in such a parlous state that treament must be administered without delay.

Bad losers? GIRUY

#3 How can I agree with your point but still think you are an idiot? Oh, it's all that bile...

Germany had the stones to finish the game off. I'd have called it a pen and they would still have won. Also, how did that #9 for Turkey stay on the park. Kicking everyone in sight. Shameful. We would never do that...

He's just happy cos they signed Pat McGroin or someone from some footballing colossus. Barca, was it? Cannae mind. but when he is happy he needs to go rangers-bashing. It is the substance which fills the sorry vacume in his life...

Why, oh why does football have to stop when a guy is injured? They hardly ever are. A player lying on the park can be atttended to, game on.

So disturbed, you posted 2 comments about my comment.

Just how gullible are you? Is it worth a hat-trick?

Probably.

Anyway divine condom, what is a vacume?

Incorrect spelling.

Vacuum. but the point still stands.

I see that you have also posted a second time. I suppose that makes you gullible? Go back to your hypocritical rantings and stop talking about condoms and other things you will never have a use for.

Dirty condom - I see you fell for my two posts trick. You're even more gullible than I first thought, and predictable to boot. I stopped using condoms when one of my many girlfriends advised me that the thin elognated part at the end was NOT for standing on to remove it after use.

Raskolnikov,

And anyway, it wasn't the posting of 2 comments per se I was ridiculing. It was the posting of 2 comments to say the same thing.

Get it?

Probably not.

Yes Turkey lost thats fact, Germany made heavy weather of it, another fact, however for Richards to say that Germany should have put the ball pout of play is ludicrous there is no law to state they should and if the ball was played out every time a player went to ground the ball might be in play for a heck of a lot less than it is today.

I also hear that a Premier league club is looking at Richards and tend to agree with Mark McGhee's comment that he is not good enough for the EPL.

Why don't players just accept defeat gracefully and get on with it.

I noted the incident at the time and on watching replays Kazim seems to crumple with nobody near him which has been a common ploy by time-wasters in this tournament. Also Lahm had his back to Kazim and was accelerating away from him so he was not aware of the Turk having been stricken down.

I was favouring the Turks in this match but Kazim's outburst is just sour grapes.

If there was any doubt that Colin 'kazim' Richards was really English, this outburst of sour grapes puts an end to it.
I've admired Turkey's gutsy performances, but I would have had so much more respect if they had just given the Germans the credit they deserved.

There's so much talk about how 'diving' or 'simulation' is wrecking the game. I'd like to see an end to players making pathetic excuses and throwing about accusations about other teams, and start showing a bit more dignity in defeat.

Funny how no one saw fit to comment when and Italian went down with no one near him and the ref stopped play right away with France in a good position...not that they would have scored but you get the point, interesting that Kazim complained as he is an Englishman who does not even speak turkish but on the score of ability he gave Lahm a real hard time and he is easily good enough for Scotland if only the dons were so lucky. Never mind Kazim the Germans will get tanked in the final.

I am sick of this. It is up to the referee. He abdicates his responsibility when he asks the players to put the ball out, in my view. The player should just stop and point to the ref, saying, "blow the whistle then if you want but I'm keeping the ball if you don't". Not saying he should go and score but at least protect the position. Haven't you noticed how the team which puts the ball out never gets it back in the same position?
