JOSE GONCALVES will leave Hearts at the end of the season when his current contract expires.
The Portuguese defender becomes a free agent in June and confirmed today that he intends heading for pastures new after four years at Tynecastle. Clubs in England are monitoring the situation and the player is aware the Hearts hierarchy could opt to
sell him during January's transfer window if a suitable offer is received.

However, he stressed his desire to see out the season in Edinburgh before embarking on a new chapter of his career.

Goncalves, now 24, cost Vladimir Romanov £700,000 to lure from the Swiss club FC Thun in January 2006.

He initially joined FBK Kaunas of Lithuania, a club financed by Romanov's Ukio Bankas Investment Group, before being loaned to Hearts. He signed a permanent contract at Tynecastle the following year.

He spent last season on loan at Germany's FC Nuremberg and has performed consistently since returning to Hearts in July, but his present contract, worth over £10,000 a week, is unlikely to be renewed.

"In January I will have been here four years," Goncalves told the Evening News. "I've had a great time here and I've learned from a lot of different experiences.

"I hope that, at the end of the season, I will go with my head held high. I hope people will remember me for all the positive stuff I did for the club.

"If I get the chance to go to another team in another country I will be happy. I hope the people here will understand my reasons for going. I've had four great years at Hearts and now I think it's the time to go to get new motivation.

"Four years is a long time at any football club. They have given me everything here and I learned a lot of good stuff.

"I can only be happy at the way the club have treated me, the way the players have treated me and the way the fans have treated me. It's only been positive stuff. I will always remember Hearts."

Goncalves said he has no plans to hold contract talks with prospective new employers even though he is legally entitled to do so come January. "At the moment I'm not thinking about talking to any team," he said.

"You never know what happens during the winter but I would like to stay through the winter. It depends what the club is thinking. We will have to sit down but I want to stay."

Was always going to happen so no real loss.

Good player when he arrived, possibly our best player this season. Will not be short of offers when his contract is up. At a reported £10k a week though, that's over half a million off the bill which helps further with reducing the already significantly lowered wages : turnover.

Now time to bring in some world cup winners (according to Vlad).

In reality you numpties will have to settle for some of Lithuanias reserve team

At no time has anyone at Hearts ever stated that we would bring in 'World Cup Winners'.

Hibs = a footballing embarrassment, a team with one of the most embarrassing derby records on the planet.

Good and bad news for hearts. Save £10,000 a week of your wage bill but lose a player that, looking from outside, has been one of your better players this season.
He wouldn't ask for a transfer in January as that would mean losing his C6% of any transfer fee, which I believe he is entitled to if he is sold by the club.
Still reckon he will be away in January though.

Hearts00,

The Jose Goncalves story illustrates everything that is wrong with Hearts.

Firstly, offering a young inexperienced player £10k a week was ridiculous to begin with and is much to do with putting us in the trouble we are in.

Secondly, not hiring a decent manager/coach in the first three years of Jose's stay meant that he was never allowed to fulfill his potential and became a player who hardly played and when he did was confused, erratic and low on confidence.

Thirdly, he is just another player that came in with a decent reputation and spent more time on the treatment table than played. I am not saying that Jose has taken the mick like Larry and Nade but he has hardly played.

Fourthly, just when his contract is up for renewal, he starts to play well and will leave with a huge amount of money in his back pocket...meanwhile what have Hearts got out of it all? Nothing but a huge amount of debt.

Bottom line again for Hearts, money poured down the drain and nothing but massive and almost unbelievable underperformance in return.

Have lessons been learned? Who knows. Let the purging process continue though and it will not be completed until that downright thief Kingston and joker Nade are off the wage bill.

Yeah, I think this sums up the first few years of Vlad quite nicely. We're almost through the mess he built up now though.
Hopefully we can move forward once the last of the big money players leaves. Nade - I'm looking at you!

Jose Goncalves was one player that Hearts would have LOVED to cash in on. Unfortunately for them, they'll get diddly-sqaut. Seems about right. I hope he does hang on till next summer, another £180,000 slipping right out the Jambos oily hands :-)

~25 "Secondly, not hiring a decent manager/coach in the first three years of Jose's stay meant that he was never allowed to fulfill his potential and became a player who hardly played and when he did was confused, erratic and low on confidence".

Its amazing the number of Jambos who having hailed Csaba as the best in the SPL for so long are now turning against him in ever increasing numbers by the day.

Wake up guys, Csaba is still the same competent manager, its Vlad you need to start demonstrating against.....before it really is to late!!!

Go Gorgie Dalry,

#24 I just think that Jason Thomson is a pretty poor footballer. Poor touch, poor passing and isn't very quick. He's a really poor version of Robbie Neilson :-)

Craig Thomson is by far the better player, but still has plenty of learning defensivley to do. He's great doing forward and his crossing is better than anyone else at Hearts.

#25 Spot on. Once Goncalves, Kingston and Nade are gone by the end of the season the club can focus on sorting out its finances. You don't have to pay silly money to do well in the SPL. You just have to spend what you've got wisely.....something we havn't done for a long time now.

Happy that he helped us win the Cup in 06 with against performance against Hibs in the Semi.

Happy that we finished 2nd in that same season getting a wee taste of what being in the Champions League could be like.

Happy in the fact that Romanov has tried to invest money - something no one else has tried to do for any club outside the old firm.

Happy in his performances this season

As for the situation now - yes it does look dark but at least we gave it a shot - if things do turn pears then at least we gave it a go.

Wee suggestion mate - Cheer up.

#25 You missed one point. Following this public announcement that he will not be signing another contract at Hearts, Jose probably just kicked his last ball for Hearts. Romanov is likely to view this as treason and demand that Jose is left out of the first XI and made to train with the laddies from now on, a la Webster. So, his only prolonged spell of form in 4.5 years at the club is likely to be spent in the stands.
We can now only hope that somebody offers £200k in January and he can leave and be replaced by Zaliukas or Kucharski. Perhaps Csaba had this in mind when signing the Polish lad, who's barely played since he came on board in the summer?

Shame still hoped he'd stay on another season or two but he definately has the quality to play at the highest level. I personally would take a few hundred grand for him in January now to recoup some of the wages and transfer fee. Plenty of cover in the centre of defence with the likes of young Mcgowan and sure his current loan spell will be doing him good in the meantime. Players come and go nothing new in that. Maybe his wages can be spent up front??

Same old derby that game really...

Hearts with their usual rugby like tactics.

Long throw ins, long punts from their own half, rugby tackles, big strong players, hitting the ball over the bar and expecting it to be a goal...

Hibs were dire in that game (no doubt about it)... but the fact that you lot have to play ugly in order to scrape results against us is rather sad.

Last 8 league derbies - Hibs 3 Draws 4 Hearts 1

Which have all been 0-0's 1-0's and 1-1's.

Hearts tactics have always been to stop other teams playing football, by not playing football themselves.

They really are an ugly freak of nature, and thankfully they are about to be put down.

Oh dear Pele!! You have been on the grumpy pills.

How you could assess Hibs to be 6 years ahead of Hearts is mindbending. Like us, you are a selling club. The good players you may have now will leave. Your prospects of winning trophies are no higher now than they have been since 1952.

Hearts are one step away from a cup final and when the ball starts hitting the net, we will be charging up the league table to a 2nd or 3rd place finish.

Same old story I'm afraid Pele. Another season of mediocrity in prospect at good old Easter Road.

We're currently on a 7-match unbeaten run. In the course of that we've played every team in the top 6 bar Celtic, plus a local derby away from home. In the seven games we've conceded three goals. I think that would indicate that there's a lot more to this Hibs side than their striking force, to anyone who understands anything about football.

Aye keep telling yourself that and you might eventually believe it.

That derby was the most one-sided in years. If it had been a boxing match the ref would have stopped the contest after half-an-hour.

Rugby team indeed - we were the ONLY team that passed the ball (recall the flowing passing movement which ended with Stewart just shooting wide) - whereas your 'team' bypassed the midfield entirely by punting long balls up to Nish.

Poor, poor show from a team somehow sitting in 2nd place - a false position on that showing, frankly.

Still, if you have to resort to self-delusion even when, by hibs standards, you are having your 1-in-10 years 'freak' good season - then it betrays the fact you have little confidence in your purple patch lasting!

Precisely. Three wasted years whilst Romanov played live fantasy football and mismanaged the club's finances.

Sadly for the fans, the people who love HMFC, there are now a few Romanov chickens coming home to roost.
