HIBS and Hearts will clash at Easter Road next month in the pick of the Homecoming Scottish Cup fourth-round ties, with two Edinburgh derbies now scheduled within the space of a week.
Mixu Paatelainen's side travel to Tynecastle on Saturday, 3 January for the sides' second SPL meeting of the season, before the pair will meet on cup duty the following weekend, possibly on Sunday, 11 January if, as expected, the match is chosen for live television coverage by Sky Sports.

Scotland manager George Burley helped pick out his former club against Hibs at yesterday's Hampden draw – the last of the 16 ties to come out of the hat – and predicted a game to remember. "Both teams will be desperate to win that game. I think it will be a cracking match," said Burley.

Hearts hammered Hibs 4-0 at Hampden in the semi- finals of the 2006 tournament, before beating Gretna in the final. The only other meetings between the teams in the past 30 years have seen Hearts beat Hibs 2-1 at Easter Road in the fourth round in 1990 courtesy of a Wayne Foster winner, while Hibs won 2-1 in a quarter-final at the same venue in 1979.

First Division leaders St Johnstone have landed a plum home tie with Rangers, while Celtic will host Dundee. If Ayr can overcome Lochee this weekend they will host their rivals Kilmarnock in another derby, while the winners of Inverurie Locos and Vale of Leithen will entertain Motherwell. All ties are scheduled for the weekend of 10-11 January.

It would be nice if the Scotsman would remember that it is supposed to be at national newspaper, not the morning edition of the Evening News, and realise that outside of the capital, no-one is interested in edinburgh's two bald men fighting over a comb.

I think that you'll find that this is the tie of the round and is of interest to most football supporters after their own teams draw.

It's always a derby which shows that football passion exists in abundance outside of the OF, even if that's too difficult a concept for certain Numpties to grasp.

By the way, please don't think I'm calling you stupid, but I should point out that Newton only discovered gravity. He didn't invent it.

You'll probably learn all about this when you go to "Big School".

The tie of the round as far as I can see is Ayr versus The Killie scum. I believe if Ayr win again we get to keep them!

How factually inaccurate is this article. Fozzy on the fence occurred in February 1994, not 1990!

It isn't difficult, Hootsmon!

As a Hibs supporter of considerable vintage I have to think that it might be a bit of a shame were Hibs to actually win the Cup. After all, I've gone all my life watching Hibs not win the Cup. I'm used to it. I'm comfortable with it. I've never known anything else.

Leaving Rangers and Celtic aside there is a bank of clubs like Kilmarnock, Hearts, Falkirk, Aberdeen, St Mirren etc who, at the start of every season have some expectation that this could be their year to win the Cup. Every other club hopes they get a good cup run.

Then we have Hibs. They have a proud record stretching back over a century and surely unmatched anywhere in the world. Despite some close calls, their record remains unblemished and unique and should be a matter of pride to the Hibernian Support.

So lets have less defeatist talk on this and lets parade our achievement to the world. As in many other landmark events in the world of football, Hibs lead the way.

NIG - Did Newton not discover gravity? I'm sure it was around before him. If anything he invented its the name.
But you are right, the Scotsman needs to ignore the Edinburgh clubs just like the BBC - away and boil yer heid.

Hibs have to go out sometime, they might as well get it over with.

#5 Private Pike actually hit the nail plum on the head. I knew there had to be a reason Ive suffered various semi finals and finals of the Scottish Cup over the years. I thought initially it was to see Hibs eventually win but I now realise that I must subconsciously know theyre going to get beat - usually stuffed actually - with the notable exception of the 0-0 series against the dark side back in the 70s. I am purely there to ensure the legacy of non-performance continues. Its like a veil has been lifted from my eyes - thank you pp youre a star.

#1 You're a moron, as mentioned above it's the tie of the round.

If you want to read about the Ugly Sisters, go away and read The Scum, which usually has the pair of t1ts on the Back Page as well as P3.

No question Hibs vs Hearts is the tie of this round of the cup. Will it be shown by Setanta as the main cup match of the day?

Two derby games eh, superb.

The Yams will have got rid of the expensive players made a few sales to try and save their existence - and then bring in some low grade loan / pseudo signings.

And then normal service will be resumed, they will be back to their shambolic selfs again and then get beat TWICE by Hibs and then disappear into a spiralling free-fall of enternal gloom.

Your doomed YAMS.

I have just heard the news that this match is to be played on Sunday at 12:15.
No thought for the fans . Just the demands of television must be met. Fans are just an appendage to the TV companies.

I and my two grandsons will not be able to attend. So despite paying for the cup top up and season tickets we miss the prime tie of the cup.

Who cares . The club has got its money of us . TV gets its high profile match.

We fans are just shunted aside.

I wish fan power could do something about this , but of course Money is more important than people.

Sad but true....as Jock Stein once said....

"football is nothing without the fans"...

The problem with SKY and Setanta etc....is they work very hard at trying to sensationalise and create controversy where it doesn't exist in order to sell the TV game and unfortunatly it does generate fans interest to the point that they can shift and shuffle what they want...whenever they want....

They have pushed football in a direction that is unhealthy for the game in the long run....

Edinburgh derbies happen 4 times a season at least ...for me the most eye-catching tie is Saint Johnstone v Rearrangerz as I think we'll see an upset that night.

The rearrangerz do well in front of 50,000 of their own fanz , but give them a wee sip of adversity and they just don't want to know...they just want to get out of there from the first whistle.

They are jumpy, they flap, and they cannae score...and their captain recently said they'd win every other game this season ...aye...sure.

Hearts always hammer the hobos.

Another EASY win.

Cant wait!
