YOU'D excuse the nation if it rolls its eyes this morning at George Burley's pronouncement that all is not lost in the pursuit of World Cup qualification. Burley did his best to be upbeat in the wake of a thoroughly disappointing day at Hampden, spoke of Scotland's prospects in the present tense rather than the past, but you really have to wonder now.
"It's still possible," said the manager. "It can still be done." Of course it can, but it may take wins in Holland and Norway and no more lost points at Hampden. The Tartan Army, in their infinite optimism, are left hoping against hope for the best but surely preparing themselves for the worst.

So much of what Burley said yesterday was odd. He said there were not many chances in the game in the first half when quite clearly there were, virtually all of them falling the way of John Carew. Burley added that his team "did enough in the second half to win the match but we were just not clinical enough" but this completely ignores the amount of chances that Norway had, which out-numbered Scotland's.

In the mind of the manager, Scotland had Norway "on the ropes for long periods" of that second half but, at best, Scotland's period of dominance lasted 20 minutes. After that the Norwegians got themselves right back into it and could have, probably should have, scored two goals in the closing minutes, Steffen Iversen missing the first and Carew failing with the second.

But when Burley mentioned Chris Iwelumo he entered the surreal. "Ninety-nine times out of 100 he'd have scored," he said of Iwelumo's startling second-half blunder. "He should have scored but he's shown that he's a goalscorer. He's got height and strength and he gave Norway problems. He showed he can do well at this level."

Quite how a miss from two yards is proof that Iwelumo is a goalscorer is anybody's guess. Quite what a prolific striker like Kris Boyd made of it all from his spot on the substitute's bench is worth a thought as well. In your wildest imagination you couldn't picture Boyd making a hash of that chance. Your frail granny wouldn't have missed it so there can be little doubt that Boyd would have put it away. Iwelumo has to live with this until March for Scotland are not back on duty until then. You have to feel sorry for him. He comes across as a decent guy but he had a horrific debut.

"We felt that if we got the first goal we'd have gone on and won the game," said Burley. "If Chris had scored I think we'd have won. If we'd scored in that period of the second half, which we completely dominated, then the match would have been won. But qualification is still possible. We said we wanted three points and we haven't got them. The away games are important. We've been to Norway before and we've won. It was always going to be a tight group where anybody can beat anybody else. This is a missed opportunity. You look to win your home games but we gave it everything. We should have finished them off but we can still qualify. There will be twists and turns in the group. Norway have two points, we have four. All is not lost."

Burley, quite rightly, mentioned the need, the absolute necessity, to get something in Holland in March. "We did it in France last time and we'll be battling away right until the end."

From his counterpart, Åge Hareide, a different tune. Hareide has been taking some abuse of late for his team's supposedly defensive mindset. More grief followed in the wake of their 2-2 draw at home to Iceland last month. "This is a step forward," he said. Norway play Holland in Oslo on Wednesday night.

"Our defence was good and our chances fell mostly to Carew. It was an OK game for us. We deserved three points here. We had most of the chances overall. In the second half the chances fell both ways but we had most over the 90 minutes. Scotland, obviously, had that open chance (Iwelumo's] but we had great opportunities in the first half and we had two great ones (Iversen and Carew] at the end. The second place spot is going to come down to ourselves, Scotland and Macedonia. We've a good away record so we're in there. Against Iceland we dropped two points but you couldn't say we dropped two points here. One point at Hampden is good. Scotland don't drop too many at home."

They did yesterday and the mood in Hampden was one of mass dejection in the aftermath. Burley is a positive person by nature. He'll comfort himself with the thought that next time his team plays – against the Netherlands away on 28 March – he'll most likely have Barry Ferguson and Alan Hutton in the ranks. That'll be a boost for sure. The cavalry are needed, now more than ever.

Sports writer Andrew Smith will be online for a live discussion of yesterday's match from noon. Click here to join the debate.

Dear oh dear oh dear. Scotland failures again. 1998 a distant memory - the last time Scotland qualified. Incidentally, in the France '98 Scotland only gained 1 point in the group of 4, and lost to Morroco 3-0. So even when Scotland do manange to actually qualify they end up total failures anyway.
If only Scotland could go as far as England and win the world cup, or at least get to the quarter finals or semis like they have done before. It must really hurt the so called "tartan army" knowing that their neighbours are doing so much better than them. I hope they don't feel too sad, and suffer from small country syndrome too much.

Just an opinion,

OK, #'s 2and 3, but let's admit we are no longer an even decent threat in European football let alone World class of the 'beautiful game'.
I watched pre match interviews with John Collins, missed Murdo McPherson, and a bunch of others such as Law, Crerand, Narey, Dave McKay, Caldow, Tommy and Archie Gemmel to mention but a few of world class players we had back then.
Add the late Jim Baxter, Jimmy Johnstone to take the unbelievable Celtic/Rangers bile that comes around every time we play, and you get the picture why Scotland are "doomed", as private Fraser used to say in Dads Army.
Scotland still can do it. Boyd is another Jim Forrest/Wilie Wallace, they can stick the ball in the back of the net just as Gilzean, St John and a host of others who did not wear the colours of Glasgow's big two.
OK, I've drowned my sorrows, but let us not blame Burley, he no longer has Bremner, Gray, Lorimer, McKay, White, and a ton more who were world class back then - and I have not mentioned McNeil, Craig, Auld, Forrest, Willie Johnstone, and a bunch more!!!!!!!!

Felt sorry for Iwelumo every striker misses sitters, and he is probably still wishing the ground would upen up and swallow him.
Whether the same chance would have fell for Kris Boyd ,had he been put on in place of Iwelumo,we`ll never know.
Burley and the team now need our support, more than ever.Heres to a positive result against Holland in march.
Mistakes??? We`ve all been there!!!
We need to get our lads back to the same level of confidence they showed against France.
Come on SCOTLAND!!!

I dont see what all the fuss is about Scotland are the same as before we play not to lose instead of going out to win, 80% of the team is full of 2nd and 3rd rate players so Burleys hands are ties the same way as Eck and Wattie but George will turn it round and the clowns who call themselves the terten ermy will have egg on their faces as usual

The lead story is Kris Boyd stating he will never never play for Scotland again under George Burley!

Still I suppose it stops him pretending to be injured later in the season...

Scotland seriously missed 3 main elements from last year yesterday; 1. Composure in midfield (Ferguson) 2. Attacking threat (Hutton bombing down the right) 3. and a goalscorer (Boyd). I remember when Iwelumo played for Stoke and he missed chances like the obvious one yesterday frequently. He is a horse and you do not play him as a goalscorer. This guy is never an international striker. When he came on with Fletcher which one was the goalscorer? because neither of them has scored an international goal yet!
Also, Maloney needs to slow down. I don't know what he is going to do next so can you imagine what it is like to play alongside him? It's like the boy plays like he has ADHD. I dunno what has happened to him down south but he is not the team player he was and is trying too hard. If he adds some composure to his game he will be a fantastic player.

I have read the Sunday Mails online report and fail to see where Kris Boyd states any intention, perhaps you could enlighten me. Does the hard copy article expand on this story with actual quotes from Kris Boyd. Although knowing Mark Guidi's track record I wouldn't read too much into it.
By the way there no paranoia here, just wanting to deal in facts.

I dont support Rangers or Celtic, but I fail to see why Burley did not play a natural goal scorer in Kris Boyd. Instead he chose a diddy to match the other 10 diddy's who cant even do the basics. As Jimmy Greaves used to say, they can trap the ball further than I can hit it.

Burley boobed by not playing Boyd at some stage.
The pressure in the 2nd half would have resulted in a win if a man who can score goals had been playing.

Morrisson was gash, we had 2 too many passengers in midfield in Fletcher and Robson, and as for Caldwell and Weir at the back.

We are an average team full of average players BUT we should have won and could have if the right team had been on the pitch!

Burley boobed by playing two many overpaid OF players who could not give a jot about Scotland. Bring in players who want to fight for the cause not OAP's like zimmerman Weir.

"here"
"well you're a fat t##d traynor.." etc etc

also i cant believe that burley is taking more flak from the media for not playing boyd iin this one game than smith has takrn for the last 2 seasons for his treatment of boyd...but hey as a celtic fan im delighted miller and darcheville suit me fine ..xxx

See Chris Boyd has not been slow to show his feelings on the matter. Just how far the poor wee wean managed to throw his teddy out of the cot is debatable. If it's as far as he is prepared to run during matches it won't be far.

Burley is right in the Boyd v's Iwelumo issue. Boyd probably wouldn't have made it to where Iwelumo was, any Burley is the boss.

Also, I the thing that gets up most peoples noses about the English team, is the commentators, not the players.

Unfortunately we now have similar Scottish puddings from the media ranks, like Jim Traynor, battering on about getting rid of Burley.

Time to put a sock in it Jimbo.

boyd knows that the brown nosed parasites will be right behind him and it will also get him a few brownie points with the rangers fans who have went all "anti scotland" due to the booing at the norehern ireland game..however one hopes that scottish football fans may dish out the same bile for boyds traitorous act as others have suffered...although boyd doesnt play that much...first choice against st mirren..eh no..no appearences in the last 5 old firm games and 3 starts in the last 21 european games for rangers..boyd is the perfect example of the over paid overhyped modern player...he will look back at his career with some sadness thats for sure...

Boyd's decision seems petty.

OK, the guy is miffed at being left out. But he isn't even a regular starter for his club - doesn't he understand Burley's reasoning?

It seems to me that Boyd has used Iwelumo's howler as a convenient justification for his pettiness. A sort of "I told you I was better, Mr Burley..." response.

Boyd's timing - in the middle of our qualification campaign - is both crass & unpatriotic.

Why doesn't Boyd knuckle down and prove Burley - and Walter Smith - wrong by playing consistently well?

Does Boyd think that his status as a Rangers player will inevitably generate a media campaign to heap opprobrium on George Burley..?

boyd really had little choice but to retire. his record shows that he is a lazy player, but, and it is a big but, he scores goals and at a time when scotland really needed a goal he was left mon the sideline. scotland did not score and the draw makes qualification for the world cup unlikely. burley is responsible and only one person should pay that being burley. does anyone remember dennis law not the most energetic player on the field, but if i remember correctly rather a good scorer of goals.
time for the new berti voigts to retire before he humiliates scotland further
