Fletcher a major doubt for Hibs ahead of visit to in-form United

STEVEN Fletcher is a major doubt for Hibernian's SPL match against Dundee United tomorrow, and may struggle to regain fitness in time to take part in Scotland's friendly with Argentina next week.
The striker is expected to be included today when George Burley announces his squad for the match at Hampden. But he picked up two separate injuries during his club's home defeat by Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday, and yesterday his manager
could only say he was hopeful rather than confident that he would be able to play this midweek or next.

"Fletch is touch and go," Mixu Paatelainen said when asked if the striker would be available for the visit to Tannadice. "He got an ankle problem during the warm-up on Saturday, then got a dead leg during the match. I would like to think he is fit for (the Argentina] game, and hopefully for Wednesday too."

In recent weeks Fletcher has been playing up front alongside Derek Riordan and Colin Nish as Paatelainen has sought to make the most of the firepower at his disposal by playing 4-3-3. The adventurous formation has not found favour with some fans, who believe it is asking too much of the Hibs midfield, but the manager appears to have confidence in it.

"People look at the numbers too much, say 'It's 4-3-3, the midfield is outnumbered'. It's not necessarily the case."

If Fletcher is not passed fit for tomorrow, either Fabian Yantorno or Steve Pinau could come in as a straight replacement in an unchanged formation. Pinau came off the bench to take over from Fletcher during Saturday's 2-1 defeat, and Yantorno, who has scored five goals in ten games for the reserves, made his first start for the club in an attacking midfield role.

As Dean Shiels was also playing, that meant Hibs had only one defensive midfielder – Ian Murray – and that appeared to leave them susceptible to the counter-attack. Paatelainen, however, does not think the poor result was a consequence of the formation he fielded, and insisted he would not be rushed into kneejerk changes.

"We realise exactly what happened," he said. "The two goals were from sloppy defending and we must do better. It's always frustrating when we don't do what we want to do.

"The players listen. I can see they're trying to do the stuff out there.

"Every player must make sure they do their stuff out on the pitch. On Saturday we had too many players not performing their individual roles and we struggled.

"We did that during pre-season and we showed that on Saturday again. There was the same lapse in concentration.

"You have to make sure you do your job. It's always frustrating when we don't do the stuff that we want to do, but unfortunately that's how it goes.

"It takes a long time to improve. We go back to the training ground and do the same stuff, make sure players go on the pitch focused and aggressive.

"We are not panicking at all. We have highlighted defensive areas, but offensively we were poor as well and it was a very bad day for us."

That result at Easter Road highlighted the inconsistency in the SPL this season, with the majority of teams struggling to put a decent run of form together. Some observers may have deduced it is a mediocre league campaign, but the Finn is not so sure.

"There's tremendous quality," he insisted. "Every team has qualities and weaknesses.

"We realise every game is very difficult. The league table shows that, and it makes it very exciting."

The league table also shows that Hibs are now down in seventh place, but still only four points behind third-placed United, who have recovered from a shaky start to rise to third place behind the Old Firm.

The tenacity of the United midfield suggests that Hibs will be in for a long and trying evening if they do not rectify the errors of the weekend, but Paatelainen can take some comfort from the fact that his team were the last to beat Craig Levein's side, who have won seven and drawn two of their nine matches since.

"Dundee United have different strengths and they can cause problems," Paatelainen concluded. "But I believe we have players that, if everyone is focused and concentrating and thinking about the game all the time, we will be fine."

Come on Mixu ,every body and thier dog knows what ever system your are trying[not sure if you even know]its not working.two up front ,an extra man in midfield against DUFU or Hibs will get embrassed again.
Also you said we had to address the goal keeping situation when we got pumped out the inter toley cup and done zilch about it wake up and smell the coffee.

Not very encouraging remarks from Mixu. Doesnt seem like the penny's dropped with him. From his remarks it seems that he is going to persist with the 4 3 3 line up which leaves us over run in midfield, stopping any quality play up to the forwards (which effectively leaves us with 7 outfield players who actually contribute to the game). Starting any game with 3 men down is never likely to be a policy that reaps much success (to be honest, up until now they`ve arguably done well to keep the poor results to what they have been).

I hope I`m wrong, but I predict a bit of a beating from United. They`ll cut us apart from midfield and Mixu will not make any changes to counter whatever set up they come at us with. He`ll stuff the midfield with offensive players who are light weight and will be bullied off the ball, and then its just a matter of time before Hogg et all make one of their customary slip ups.

4:1 prediction

You may have been the last team to beat us (and we played you off the park that day !) but you wont be the next.
1 of the 2 bad defeats tomorrow I should think.

Normally, I look forward to a United Hibs game, but I'm dreading tomorrow to be honest...we have no width in the team, the midfield when they get the ball muck about with square pointless passing, the defence when they're not mucking about hoof it aimlessly up front, and if we look at the goals we've lost this season we are incredibly vulnerable to the quick breakaway when we lose posession in an attacking area. The amount of times an opposition player has been left free on the wings is unbelievable. What's really worrying though is it was the same in the games against Elfsborg - we've got talented players alright, just not playing the right formation. You can see Murray busting a gut every game but he's out of position, Shields is lightweight and would have more impact coming on when the opposition tire and our goalkeeper(s) need punted. Sorry to be so negative, but Saturday was dire and maybe I'm still feeling sore...having said that we'll probably go to Tannadice and win!

#5 - SHEILDS, if you hadn't noticed, left a while ago. Sheils (no D) is still there and unfortunately still in the starting lineup of our shocking 4-3-3. Im a fan of sheils on his day, but he needs a bit of time on the bench, along with Riordan.

MIXU - you are f'ing clueless. you sit in the stands and see the game from our prosepctive, you see how bad your formation is, and you persist with blaming the players. what a way to get moral up. nobody tried on saturday, im gonna guess this is the reason why.

"People look at the numbers too much, say 'It's 4-3-3, the midfield is outnumbered'. It's not necessarily the case."

im not a mathematician, im a football fan. I dont need numbers to see we are outnumbered, outclassed and overrun in midfield. when you resort to defending your case by basically saying "well, sometimes we aren't overrun" is pathertic. we should never be in this situation, and if you don't change it IMEDIATELY, me and a lot of others wont be going back to watch your garbage...

... and to think after the celtic game I was on your side.

How deluded/incompetent can he be? Up until quite recently I was willing to give mixu a break, hoping he was just learning the trade and fleshing out some new ideas but he seems to be becoming even more incoherent and babbling the longer the season goes on. The formation is not working, its clear enough for everyone to see, maybe if we had 3 solid, ball winning players like murray I could understand it being used on some occasions but he really seems to have no clue how to set a team up and then talks garbage when trying to defend it and himself.

He talks about how 4-3-3 doesnt necessarily leave us outnumbered in midfield, clearly by the very definition of the term you will always be outnumbered playing with 3 in midfield against 4. He also mentions how sloppy defending is costing us goals, something I would agree with but could that not be because the defence is under increasing pressure due to a total lack of a midfield? One final thing, another reason im seriously questioning his sanity is the manner in which he seems to blame the players for every defeat, great manager like Ferguson, Wenger etc always defend the players no matter what, he seems to use them as an excuse for his failing. Pathetic

Not quite sure why it took me so long, but having read this mince from the blabbering fool, the trip to Tannadice is cancelled for the Dood.

I've gone into his failings for long enough. It's simple now.

MIXU MUST GO.

No Mixu, I don't look at the numbers, I look at the pitch and "SEE" that we are outnumbered, which is "necessarily the case". Sorry to say but a good gubbing is all we can expect from the DUFC game, if we persist with 4 - 5 attacking players we are doomed, doomed I tell you. Maybe we need a right good "doing" for Mixu/Petrie to wake up and see what is glaringly obvious to the rest of us "THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK FFS!"
I hate to say it but mad Vlad from the manky side of Edinburgh is doing a better job of picking his side, choice of formation and more of a clue about tactics for games than Mixu!

Wake up call for Mixu.

I can't see him lasting of he does not get this formation sorted out fkn pronto.

You never know though. From some of the games I've been to I have seen Hibs 'look' like they could score goals for fun - and inevitably not.

Maybe it will all come together on the night and DUFC will get humped? Chances, but I live in hope.

Ayegudyin, apologies - you're quite right of course - it's Shiels not Shields, just shows how upset I am...the thing is I was impressed by the attitude of the players during the Celtic game, but why didn't Mixu use any substitutes? It was a manky day - I was drenched - the pitch was heavy and it's a big pitch. I feel if he'd freshened up the defence by bringing Hogg and Thicot on we might have got the point we deserved. One thing about the Hibs - it's never dull. Frustrating as hell at times, but never dull!

We might get 4-4-2 for once.
