NANCY striker Marc-Antoine Fortune looks set to be included in the Celtic squad which takes off for a pre-season trip to Australia tomorrow after being won over by the club and manager Tony Mowbray.
Fortune passed a medical and agreed terms with Celtic last night. A £3.8 million fee had earlier been agreed between the Scottish club and Nancy. The news will disappoint Fulham, Hull City and Portsmouth. All three clubs had hoped to lure Fortune after he impressed during as four-month loan-spell with West Bromwich Albion last season.

Mowbray was always confident that Fortune was attracted by the thought of playing for Celtic but feared more lucrative rival bids from English Premier League clubs might see the 28 year-old opt to make a return to England.

Fortune, however, is reported to have sacrificed as much as a £1 million in earnings in order to make the move to the Scottish Premier League. Team-mate Landry N'Guemo could also join him, with the midfielder set to tie-up a season-long loan at Parkhead.

"Unless there is a turnaround in the situation, Marc-Antoine Fortune will soon sign for Celtic," said a statement on the official Nancy website yesterday. "He will probably be joined by Landry N'Guemo, who will be the subject of a one-season loan."

Fortune was given a tour of the Celtic facilities on Monday and what he saw simply confirmed to him what he already felt - that his career would be best served by making the move to Scotland. The personal relationship struck up with Mowbray when the player was on loan at West Bromwich Albion also informed the player's decision. "I would like to think he likes the coach," said Mowbray last week.

Mowbray had been assured by Fortune that if it was strictly to be a football decision, then he would join Celtic. The manager was aware that Fortune had other, more financially rewarding options, and prepared the Celtic supporters for bad news. He also said that he could not blame the player if he chose to secure his future rather than join up with him again in Scotland.

"He now has that eternal battle between making the football decision or the financial decision," said Mowbray. "I would never judge anyone on that. It is a very difficult decision to make."

"Believe it or not, there's a lot of footballers who play for the love of the game as well as the money that goes with it.

"To play for a club fighting for championships, hoping to compete in the Champions League is a much bigger draw than taking the money sometimes and going and fighting against relegation and playing in a league when there are only really four teams who can ever compete to win that league."

Fortune's choice of Celtic over Premier League clubs in England represents a coup for Mowbray. The French striker was quickly installed as his No 1 target following his confirmation as Celtic manager last month.

Fortune and N'Guemo would be ready-made replacements for two players not offered new deals by Mowbray. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Paul Hartley, who signed for Bristol City on Monday, were told they were surplus to requirements as Mowbray looks to put his imprint on his squad. N'Guemo, 23, is a defensive midfielder and could step in for Hartley. He has been capped three times by Cameroon and made 33 appearances for Nancy last season.

So Celtic move into overdrive on the transfer front, while Rangers can only look on and dream as they attempt to sell the family bling.

I did notice however, that the Scottish media has been raving all week about a big Rangers transfer story. Pity for the poor Gers fans though - it was a 20 year-old story and it was much ado about nothing.

You gotta feel sorry for them though. Kinda like the little boy looking enviously through the window of the sweetie shop as the rich kids spend their pocket money on all sorts of goodies.

#1 - Ah, the fallacy of the mythical loyalty bonus.

BTO - Balde has gone. Strachan has gone. John Barnes has gone. Your obsession with the past is just a smokescreen.

Move on and get over it.

You've got Jimmy Calderwood as Rangers manager to look forward to.

I wouldn't say he was a Nancy Bhoy to his face. I wonder if this is the start of a more imaginative looking Celtic in the new season.

Graham Spiers in The Times has an interesting perspective on Fortune:

"The move marks the latest in a peculiar series of events in Fortuné's career. Born in French Guiana, the tiny département in South America, the striker has played for such humble clubs as Rouen, Brest, Utrecht and then Nancy before coming to Mowbray's attention. In France, some people are staggered by Fortuné's sudden elevation".

The "McManus Saga" will take years to sort out.

Wouldn't be surprised if all of the players turned around and said "Mowbray, we don't want your wee arm band"

No prizes for guessing which one Tony always took. :-)

However, it will be good to see what all the fuss was about. Celtic definitely needed something up front I wonder if this boy is the answer they've been missing.

Fulham, Hull and West Ham all had offers on the table for him, substantially more lucrative offers even.
It is quite remarkable that he has taken the decision to join Celtic. He must lay a great deal of store in tony mobray, more than I thought was possible in the modern game.
Both Peter Grant and Mowbray take Fortune to be an excellent striker who can do a great job at Celtic...there are people at fulham, west ham and hull who seem to rate him equally highly. Grant has spoken about the players' all round contribution which more than compensates for his goals/game ratio...and btw, 5 in 17 in the prem is about 10 per season...10 per season in the prem is the equivalent of 20-25 in the spl.

3.8mil is not a big fee for a striker in the EPL. Yes other clubs were looking to sign him probably to add to their SQUAD.

I thought I had read that WBA had the option to buy him for 1.5mil.? If that was true, I am surprised they did not pick him up.

He may turn out to be better suited to the SPL game than with some of his other league clubs, time will tell.

"In France, some people are staggered by Fortuné's sudden elevation".

------

Do you think the same people were staggered by the 'elevation' of another French-raised player following his 4 years with Gueugnol, a year on loan at Crewe, and a year apiece at Sheffield Wednesday then Charlton?

23

Shantaram,

08/07/2009 04:25:08
Daillyman - The desperation of you Gers fans really is funny.

If we sign a guy who nobody else is after . . . he must be a dud. If we sign a guy who a handful of EPL clubs were chasing . . . they only wanted him to . . . er . . . wait for it . . . add to their squad.

Unbelievable but funny as well.

Why do you talk p*sh.

What desperation am I showing.

3.8mil for an EPL striker would be peanuts, and at that cost hardly be expected to be the main man for an EPL side, but a player who could add depth to a clubs strike force.

He may be better suited to the rough and tumble SPL game, as his scoring record in his career, 263 matches and 64 goals hardly sends chills down opposing keepers.

# 29 please read the following "3.8mil for an EPL striker would be peanuts" and then try to understand what the poster is saying... IMO its stating that if an EPL side were to shell out 3.8M for a striker then it wouldnt exactly set the heather on fire.

Its sad that whilst up here we consider 3.8M a major signing. transfers and speculation are floating around for players in EPL ranging from 45M for John Terry, 80M for Ronaldo. 25M for Alonso etc... 3.8M wouldnt not even be considered as a decent salary for a top player or even a signing on bonus.

As for us, we have a good core which won the league. We have and will continue to ship out players and I think that July & Aug papers will not be filled with transfer rumours based on players coming in but more about those who could be going out :-((

With Rangers in financial meltdown, it is perhaps not surprising that with only who they are going to sell next to keep the wolf from the door to concern them, their fans are turning their attention to Celtic signings.

Pathetic!

I hope Tony Mowbray knows something the rest of us don't.

Fortune's goals for in the amount of games he's played is NOT inspiring.

MAF - maybe good signing, maybe not - at least TM is dealing with the glaring inadequacy of the 'tic strikers.

just need a new back four, 2 holding and 2 attacking midfielders and a partner for MAF and he's there - not good for the balance sheet.....please let the polish nutjob retain the number 1 jersey

Toenails was the name given to him due to all posters one day giving their opinion on who he really is and remarkably most people had a similar view that could summarised as follows:

Mid 40's, sometimes semi/sometimes full-blown Jakey, seperated (see jakey reference) from wife and has fractured relationship with kid(s)...lives halfway up a tower block and occasionally the Social Services come round to check up on him, cut his toe-nails etc. Phrases similar to 'urine-soaked' were the most common theme that kept occuring from the other posters, refering mainly to his clothes and furniture.

So you move to the wide open SPL?

Pundit can handle himself alright and will at least venture into a debate and form his own opinions.

If Fortune signs, fair play to him for knocking back bigger money for a chance at winning. Gives me confidence that he has the right mentality for the job at hand. Whether he has the ability to back it up, we'll see!

Hope the Commons link is wrong, Maloney is as good and McGeady is better. £3.5m could be spent better elsewhere.

From what i've seen of Commons he is not worth £3.5 million. He is a decent player that on his day can be dangerous. He is equally as likely to do nothing. I just don't feel he is good enough to play for us. If it happens and i'm proven wrong, i'll be delighted and happy to admit i'm wrong.

Daily, i think it's been reported in a few places he'll travel with the squad to Oz. Adds to the attendance if we get a few new faces over there. Not sure if that would have been an issue anyway mind you.

I think it was Ebbe Skovdahl who said "Statistics are a bit like miniskirts. They give you nice ideas but hide the important bits".

It was also said by a senior manager at one of my previous employers during a nationwide "where the company is going" type stayy broadcasts and resulted in him being found a new job......

Samaras seems to be a "confidence" player. When he has it he is excellent, when he doesn't he is an empty jersey. Most Man City fans seemed to think similar. Started poorly, hit a good run during the middle of his first season, then died on his feet and was flogged to us. Sounds quite familiar. Shame really as the bhoy has a lot of ability and most of the attributes needed to be a very good player..

Really a higher level than Miller.

Where do you get your info.

Angouleme 4 years there, French 6th division

Roulen French 4th division

Stade Breast French 2nd division

Utrecht finished 9th in Holland ist division

Nancy French 1st division finished 15th and he could not get a game for them loaned out.

You still think he has a better pedigree of teams and playing level than Kenny Miller had.

I told you last night I expect your new striker to score between 10 and 12 goals. I'll bet I am not far off that mark.

I did not list all of KM clubs as CFC, RFC, and HFC are miles above any of the clubs level that your new striker played at.

Nancy finished 15th in the french league, and they let him go on loan.

Utrecht finished 9th in the dutch league when he was there.

But he has scored goals in the French 6th, 4th and 2nd division.

I compared clubs that Fortune and Miller played for, you stated Fortune has consistently played at a higher level than Miller, you are wrong.

You made a statement off the top of your head, saying Fortune played at a higher level than KM. he has not get over it we all make mistakes.

I am not debating that the Dutch and French leagues are better than the SPL, on the whole the quality is much better than the SPL. Your man played one season in Holland, and 53 games in the French top flight for Nancy who finished at best 15th, and loaned him out.

Miller has had a better career than Fortune has had up to this time and played for better clubs.

25% of Celtic's £20m warchest spent.

I think we'll see another 25% to 35% spent before the season starts and then the rest will be spent in

Ah, the invigoration you feel when you get a new striker. Add to that, a new manager with an attacking style, Landry N'Guemo announced on the Nancy site as on his way, and several other intriguing possibilities, it's great again to be a T1m.

A few weeks ago I was ridiculed for suggesting Celtic would give Mowbray £20m in his first season.

The usual suspects started all the "biscuit tin" talk now they must be curling up in a sad wee ball, waiting for the blitz next season. I fancy us to win the treble. Our last two managers dominated the Scottish game and both had memorable first seasons. Expect similar under Mowbray - I'd think a treble will be on the cards and maybe a Uefa Cup run - quarters or semis. I think we'll fall at the second qualifier.

Vincent Rangers are scrabbling about trying to collect enough cash just to buy a Biscuit Tin. The wolves are at their door and big time. Murray thought some of the bigger names would have been sold off by now but it's that bad that Watty had to make a public announcement recenlty to remind the football world that the whole squad is still for sale.

As it stands no one has come in with a concrete bid for any of their sub standard players except 500k for Adam and he doesn't want to go. Yet the gers fans have the bareface cheek, the absolute gall to slag us. You couldn't make it up.

Rangers have got it coming and how.

The three titles they have won in the last ten years have been handed to them on a plate - had we not done so there would have been serious fan rebellion at Ibrox, and I mean serious. I am talking lynch mobs outside the ground, empty stands inside the ground and banks closing in.

If Rangers (or Celtic) were to close it would be the end of the Scottish game. Currently Rangers are closer to closure to Celtic, it would therefore make sense for Celtic to start seriously looking further afield - either as part of the EPL or as part of a European League set up.

The truth is, Celtic who are miles away from being a great Celtic side could have and should have won 9 in a row and should be capable of winning the title every season if they stay in the SPL. Only Rangers offer a any challenge and if they go bust then it's game over for Scottish football as Celtic would need to move on - ie. I doubt Uefa or Fifa would approve of a domestic side say winning 20 leagues in a row or something ridiculous lke that.

We are witnessing a power shift in Scottish football like never before and Rangers and the rest might never recover. Just think if Celtic had a bold chairman who wanted to to spend 100s of millions. Imagine our billionaire owner saying "I want the CL and here's the money to buy the best" Where would the rest of Scottish football be? It would be league over in December every season.

By my math, Murray will have to spend £8m now to match CFC's spending.

Wonder where the £8m is going to come from?

Bank? Nope

Private investor? Nope

Murray's coffers? Nope

The fans (ie buy a brick scheme)? Nope

Firesale of players? Maybe but I doubt they'd get £8m for the lot of them.
