George Burley calls on Scots players to light up the way to Euro 2012

HE COULD, perhaps should, have been uttering a battle-cry prior to the first leg of a World Cup play-off.
Instead George Burley was yesterday highlighting the positives of a friendly with Wales, one which, he stressed, was the first step on the road to the European Championship finals in 2012.

Scotland are required to be forward thinkers since the imminent future is just a scattering of challenge matches. Like their opponents, the finals after the next finals must be the project. A third successive World Cup will get underway next summer in South Africa without Scotland's involvement, but Burley, right, is determined that the next European Championship finals will feature his side. It has to if he is to continue as manager of the international team in the long term.

He only just clung on after Scotland's latest attempt to qualify for a major finals ended in failure. But, like an adrenaline addict, Burley seems exhilarated by the near miss. The ultimate high will only be felt when Scotland again compete on the greatest stages. To have any hope of getting there means making the most of such fixtures as this afternoon's, even though it feels decidedly low-rent compared to the play-off clashes elsewhere in Europe. Burley quickly absorbed the disappointment of finishing third behind the Netherlands and Norway in Group 9. This process was made easier by the lively displays posted in the defeat at home to the Netherlands in the last match, and in the second half against Macedonia five days earlier.

"This is where we are," pointed out Burley. "We didn't qualify. And we haven't qualified for 12 years. So we are trying to build the squad, improve the squad, and get the games in that you can in order to make it stronger. It's a great job. I enjoy every minute of it. It is a challenge. If I hadn't seen the optimism and the passion that I did see in the last two games of the World Cup qualifiers, then I'd have been in a big low, but I feel we are getting better."

The Scotland manager is nothing if not relentlessly upbeat. A raft of call-offs against Japan last month meant some contended that the exercise had been diminished to the point of worthlessness, but Burley managed to return from the other side of the world with a quester's zeal. This despite Scotland's failure to manage a single shot on target. The signs are that today's contest in Cardiff will be a much more profitable assignment, with Burley inhibited by just five absentees. According to Burley, those who are missing, including Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker, should display some unease at the variety of options at his disposal. It is one positive consequence of the trip to Yokohama last month, although of those given a first run-out then, only the West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans is likely to start this afternoon.

"I've got options up front, in midfield and at the back," he said. "Lee Wallace has come in, and we've got Danny Fox – two guys who are new to the squad. In midfield Graham Dorrans came in Japan, as did Don Cowie. And Steven Naismith came in against Holland and did very well, and he is a young one as well. Up front we've got Kenny Miller and Steven Fletcher, who is doing very well, and now Derek Riordan."

It is hoped this vigour will be demonstrated against Wales, who Scotland have beaten only once in their last six meetings. This sequence of results stretches back to May 1983, and includes the 4-0 shaming delivered on Berti Vogts' side on Scotland's last visit to the city five years ago. While that might have been explained away as the consequence of experimentation, Burley is confident that he has identified the core of a side he hopes will take Scotland to the next European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine. Others will continue to flit in and out of the side.

"I feel we have more competition for places," he said. "We have the nucleus of our strongest squad here. The Euros are getting closer and this is good preparation for that. I've been impressed with our training. One or two have shown me that they are desperate to be in our starting line-up. That is always encouraging for a manager. We now no longer have players taking things for granted, thinking that they are an automatic pick. That is what we need."

"I think we are progressing," he continued. "We've had some games at home which I was very pleased with. We have the nucleus of the squad that will, hopefully, take us into the Euros. In every squad you need competition. You need guys looking over their shoulder. And we've introduced a few younger players. There is a hunger and desire – that is what we are trying to build in the squad."

Burley's enthusiasm is shared by the Tartan Army, over 4,000 of whom are expected to be in the crowd today for Scotland's first visit to the new stadium. They will be heartened to hear Burley speak of the need to get the best from James McFadden, who has tended to be a peripheral figure under the manager.

"What we are trying to do is get James McFadden into the right positions to hurt teams," he said. "That is what we will try to do. McFadden has got ability that no-one else in the squad has got, so the more we can get him in those areas, the better."

The Birmingham City forward is likely to feature in a more central role against the Welsh, where he will be urged to make a menace of himself between the home side's centre-halves. It is hoped the likes of Ched Evans, the Sheffield United striker, don't manage to cause the same amount of mischief in the heart of the Scottish defence, where Gary Caldwell and Stephen McManus will look to banish the memory of conceding three goals to Falkirk in 45 minutes in their last game together with Celtic. As always, Burley backed his preferred centre-half pairing.

"They are two very strong characters," he said. "If you went to war, you want these two guys in the trenches with you. Of course you get ups and downs in football, everybody gets those. But when you play for the Old Firm every game is magnified. They are used to that. Their characters are never in doubt."

This guy was hired to take us to the World cup finals. He failed. Why is he still there blethering about good performances too late. Begone man. You grovelled to keep your job and the blazers had no guts to fire you or fall on their own swords. Out, out all of you and let some professionls come to the rescue of Scottish football. How long do we have to put up this incompetence at all levels? The nation and the fans deserve better. You are not fit to run a pub team.

Burley has no appeal.

Ih he doesn't know how to manage, maybe he could just have some wee quirk that helped him be remembered by.

Wear a bow tie to all away games, a wee blue doubled brested suit with white buttons for home games.

Anything is better than nothing

Burley was going on the other day about how McFadden and Fletcher will be the new striking partnership.

How are the team going get the ball to them with McGregor in goals to punt it up the field?

15

Media for one,

14/11/2009 06:34:45
Burley did not fail to get Scotland to the world cup finals, Scotland as a nation failed.
As I said before, no compulsory sport at school, less impressive facilities at schools than in prisons, no SFA plans to change anything, a league system that is so fundamentaly wrong that teams play each other four times in one season, a play off system that defeats the meaning of league football and a national psyche that is defeatest.
2012 will be a non starter because non of the actual reasons for failure will be sorted out. It will be the same old almost, nearly excuses.

Good quote from Burley there. That gives him the air of a great war leader. I'm thinking along the lines of a Captain Manwairing or a Colonel Sanders.

"In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom."

These are words which stir the blood and come from the Irish Proclamation which Padraig Pearse, resplendant in his Republican Army uniform, read out to bewildered paedestrians from the steps of the GPO in Dublin on 24th April 1916. Ironically, he had spent much of the evening before filling out tax forms to ensure that her majesty's customs and excise would get their due after his inevitable and imminent death.

It was a courageous move from which the Irish Republic was born, and today against France the bold f enian men must look to Pearse and his colleagues for inspiration. They should fear none but the lord.

Go on Ireland. Be bold. Win.

A very generalised answer...

Why where they allies against the English centuries ago? be more specific..instead of quoting something you've heard..

As to WW11? your reasoning in that statement is full of contradiction...Ireland was neutral...yet there were tens of thousands who joined the British armed forces...there was a mass of executions after the war of frenchman who colaborated with the Germans...

You really need to get a grip of history before attempting to use it a means of hate or justification of your behaviour..

The war ended 64 years ago...how sad you need to use such a thing to justify your actions for a football match..

As for a poster trying to drag sectarianism into a neutral football match in Ireland, time to get a life, and move on, some people just have to be pitied.

It is fair to say that France during the medieval period was an ally of Scotland. The English invasion of France which cumlminated in the battle of agincourt in 1415 is in point as the French, concerned about the build up of english forces on the south coast , sent ambassadors to Scotland to try an persuade the Scots to launch an invasion from the north. Scotland had its own troubles at the time and wasn't able to assist.

However, after the reformation and the treatment meted out to Mary QoS, 'all bets were off' so to speak and France became one of the most potent threats to the new scottish protestant regime.

The Stewarts turned to France for help during their drawn out attempts to reclaim the throne and they weren't entirely disappointed. France supplied arms and money to support the 1745 uprising although it failed to deliver an invasion force as had been promised which was the main reasons why the jacobites turned back at derby.

After Culloden, Prince Charles Edward fled to France where he was the toast of Paris, his presence sought at all the dinner tables of the French aristocracy.

Some years later, the French and English reached an accord and the british made it a condition that France would expel the bonnie prince and after a some diplomatic gymnastics, he took up residence in Avignon which technically wasn't part of France at the time.

The peace deal with Britain turned sour a few years later and the prince was again flavour of the month, but this time the French meant business. A massive invasion force was boarded at Calais , but the weather was unsuitable for a crossing and they waited for weeks but the conditions didn't improve until the whole thing was called off.

So, post-reformation, it is quite ludicrous to suggest that France was any sort of ally of Scotland. Au conrtaire, my good fellow, given half a chance the French would have changed the face of Scotland in a heart beat and would have done so by force.

Tactics...as I see it George is caught between a rock and a hard place...set out to attack and play an open game...and get tonked...or play conservatively and make a dead rubber an eyesore to watch.

Brian, I was reading a book about the German occupation of France during WW2 and it was quite an eye-opener. I think the French always use the precedent "vichy" as a psychological coping mechanism to distance themselves from what went on during that period of history.

I was aghast to discover that their definition of who was a jew was actually wider than the nazis who drew the line at a grand parent who was a practising jew. The French defined someone as jewish if they had a grandparent who was jewish regardless of whether that grandparent actually practised the jewish faith.

As Dailyman has noted the French capitulated far too easily in WW11 and mustered very little resistance when you compare what the Greeks did.
It also has to be said that of all the occupied nations the French were the most 'enthusiastic and efficent' at rounding up the Jews for the Nazis.

That being said today is about football and lets be honest, the French on the pitch have been arrogant to**ers for a while.
Players with huge ability but even bigger egos.

As an Irishman i hope we can scrape a 1-0 today but if we both play to our potential it could be a long 90 minutes at GAA HQ for us in green.

Real pity that the Glasgow divide results in many decent Scots only wishing ill on their neighbour.

As for Kennedy having to retire, a pity that a very crude tackle has ended what looked like a promising career for club and country. I agree with you talking about the lads potential, but I think he would have fulfilled it and had a good career, the few matches I saw him play for CFC showed he was well on his way to proving he was able to play at the top level. Best of luck to the lad in all his future endeavours.

I think people outside britain understand perfectly well why many irish people still feel a degree of resentment towards britain.

Old brittania got up to some very dirty business during its occupation, and other european countries were well aware of that. The European Court of Human Rights became sick sore and tired of dragging britain in kicking and screaming for another skelping.

State leaders from around the world know exactly how dirty the brits got in their increasingly murderous efforts to pacify the country. The Irish resisted, relentlessly, generation after generation, and now they sit as a proud nation at the international table where they have many, many friends.

Next time it happens, take a deep breath, take that white hood off and calm down. Try and avoid your initial instinct to start frothing at the mouth and think:

"why does that person differ from me? Why would a person of Irish Origin retain affection for Ireland in the same way as Scots American retain affection for Scotland...etc etc..."

I never once asked why you were not supporting ROI. I gave my reasons for not supporting the French. You keep harping on about the Irish dogma in Scotland, methinks you lead a very sheltered life, when you sole limit in life is to slag a rival football team on b!tch about another nation. SDM was right its people like you and your one sides views that bring the great club of RFC down. Try travelling a wee bit and see the world it might open your bigoted eyes, you half wit.

Burley out.

Im looking forward to seeing England vs Brazil later. A draw for us i reckon. As for the ROI against France, thats a difficult one to predict. I think the Irish may be able to sneak a 1-0 win.

How about the capitulation of the French in WW2.
How about reporting of Jews to the Nazi's en mass by the French public.
How about the coward DeGaulle running and sitting in the UK for 5 years while the underground fought for "him"
How about DeGaulle blocking the UK's entry into the common market for years.
I support any side playing against the French and today it happens to be ROI.
Hope that answers your question.

I really think it's time for the Scotsman to ask for credit card ID to allow people to post. Everyday we have to put up with this moron spouting his usual garbage. Ninny you must be a masochist to come here every day and get a humiliated day in day out, go and read a book or take a course - you need to get out more.

On to the football, Scotland are a shambles but it is only a friendly with a relatively few new players and formation, it's too early to call for Burley's head. Chopping and changing managers is just going to set us back even further.

George Peat, Gordon Smith and George Burley should be removed from their positions with immediate effect.

An SOS should be sent to guys like Fergus McCann or Brian Quinn (ideally both) to sort out the mess from top to bottom.

Gordon Strachan seems to have made a mistake a Boro. Get him in.

Gordon Smith was chuckling like he'd just seen a sunny weather report for the 12th of July. Get him tea eff

Could not understand his starting line up. Fletcher, Berra on the sidelines and playing weekly in the top league in the world. McCormack sitting at the start and sticking with Miller on his own up front.

George is not the answer, and losing to Wales 3-0 should be the last straw.

You've already snapped. I am trying to help you pick up the pieces because I think you are not a bad dude. The best way to help you is to show you where your thinking is going wayward and your lies more transparent and laughable.

Expect it to go on for a long long time. Remember no pain, no gain. You'll emerge a better person from these lessons I am giving you and maybe you will be laughing someday at just how stupid you were.

Peace out wee man.

Course not all Irish are nice people, for example;

Johnny Adair
Billy Wright
Ian Paisley
David Trimble
Peter Robinson
Kyle Lafferty

There are many more but these are the most loathsome that come to mind and I am sure you'll agree.

The majority of Irish people are nice friendly people -take the plunge leave your caravan for a few hours and go find an irish pub, they'll make you feel very welsome - if you don't spout your usual hatred.

How about a boss with a bit of tactical knowledge for a start. A boss is needed who will garner a bit of respect from the players in the squad.

Burley and Scotland were in the easiest group for securing a play off place for SA, and he has not delivered, how many more competitions do you let this guy be in charge that we dont qualify for.

He is living on a 12 game unbeaten run he had at Hearts a few years ago, it is time for a new man.

Its true that Leveins side drops points and can be inconsistent vs other SPL sides.

But as you say seems to motivate his team for the big games vs the OF. As a Scotland boss he would only have to get his team up for a few games a season not 38matches, at present I think he is a better option than Burley, even being hired on a part time basis with other people to help him out.

Excellent first half in Brazil. End to end stuff with both teams really going for it. A makeshift England side are rising to the challenge. Its more like an England B team at the moment. If this is the kind of talent we have in reserve then our chances of World Cup victory are looking good.

I agree, Brazil were different class when knocking the ball around. I believe that if your team is good enough to reach a quarter final then with a bit of luck you're also good enough to go on and win it.

I like the way Capello's teams are always so organised. We've lacked that in recent years. There's a togetherness which is needed if we want to progress.
266

GRMpundit,

14/11/2009 19:16:02

Me neither, unfortunately.

I think Holland will be a big threat as will Germany.

The Germans always come good in the big competitions, especially when nobody expects the to do well.

It will be tough, but we have the players to compete if we knuckle down.
267

GRMpundit,

14/11/2009 19:17:32

Do you think they'll make it through to the WC?

Well, i cant really argue with that.
