Gerard: Murrayfield mauling won't pique Fletcher's gas

GERARD PIQUE knows all about Steven Fletcher having played against him in the Under-19 European Championships final two years ago.
And he believes the striker, who has been linked with a move to Spanish champions Real Madrid, has got what it takes to go all the way to La Liga.

However, Barcelona's new signing believes there has been too much pressure put on the 21-year-old at
too young an age and reckons that Fletcher still has some learning to do before he's ready for a move like that.

Pique made his Barca debut on Thursday night following his £7million move from Manchester United, the only player in the Catalan side's line-up to last the 90 minutes in the Murrayfield friendly. He reckons Fletcher has all the attributes to be a hit in Spain or England – as long as he is given enough time to develop.

He said: "I met him when I was playing in the Under-19 final when Scotland played Spain a couple of years ago in Poland.

"He is a very good player. I heard something about Madrid watching him but he is still only 21 years old and people should not put so much pressure on him.

"He is just a young boy and if he eventually moves to Madrid I am sure that he will learn a lot. But I also think that he can still learn a lot with Hibs.

"I think he can definitely make the step up. I think that he has to play more games here, learn more and then he can play in La Liga.

"He has got all of the attributes to make it at the top level. Now what he has to do is to build up his body, his strength and his movement.

"I think a player never stops learning and Fletcher is an example of that. If he continues to play a lot of games and play well then he can move to La Liga or even to the Premier League."

Pique was delighted to get his Barca career off to such a flying start and he continued: "It was a great debut for me personally, and also for the team as well, because it was a good performance.

"At this stage of the season obviously the results are not the important thing but it was still very pleasing to be able to go out and win by six goals.

"It was a comfortable win for us and we played really well over the 90 minutes. In the last 15 minutes it was difficult physically. I started to feel a little bit tired, but I think that is only natural when you are in pre-season games."

Hibs defender Paul Hanlon was given a torrid evening against Lionel Messi and the youngster, whilst being pleased with his contribution, admitted that the match had been something of an education.

Messi is up there with the best in the world and Hanlon said: "It was an education to be up against players like Messi, it was a great experience. The first half was quite difficult, although I thought I did okay, but obviously they got a few goals and nothing really seemed to go our way. They make so much room for themselves and so much time on the ball.

"We lost a few goals but it was more down to them keeping the ball well and producing some great finishes than anything else.

"Sometimes you think that Messi doesn't look interested but the next minute he will switch on, get the ball and bang it into the back of the net. There are not many better players in the world than Lionel Messi, so I've just got to take as much out of it as I possibly can."

They are a wee club who pay in green from the east end of Edinburgh. (Lochend)

Don't feel too bad though... hardly anyone has heard of them.

Hibs were destroyed and it WILL dent their confidence.
They now know how sh1te they are and there is no escaping it..
I cant see Hibs surviving the premier division next season. I think relegation and mass exodus of players is on the cards.
A team like Hibs who are by far less turbulent than Hearts when it comes to the way they are run, should be so far ahead of the rest in the SPL, yet they are in a more dire position.
Hibs are a disgrace.

Christ,Hearts must be the BIGGEST TEAM in the world. Everyone will want to read this book, and find what goes on at Tipcastle. So fans of other teams will be obsessive with BIGGER and BETTER Hearts? Mmmmm........

The joke of the spl is hearts, no doubts their. on the aberdeen and motherwell forums the biggest talking points on the whole boards have been forums ripping the hell out of hearts, i think that says it all about your dire club, you are getting ripped by so called "wee teams" which have absolutly battered hearts all season long, now go please vlad and keep beliving because thats all you guys have got at the moment....hope and pray

I must say I find all this new found Yam confidence fairly intriguing. New manager, more than likely a Yes man, no new signings and all of a sudden they're world beaters. Hmmmm.

Aye, not forgetting that Hibs had a fairly poor season last time out, but what about the Yams? Eh? But of course, whilst hibs pre-season has been poor so far, the Yams have put in scintillating performances against ehmmmmmmm The Pars and some diddy Irish team. Aye, world beaters again.

If I were a Yam, I'd 'ca canny for a wee while yet, after all - you might just be setting yourselves up for another fall. And we all know that over the last couple of years, large falls at Tynie have been common place. And how we have all laughed.

Hibs can't read too much into the barca defeat - it just confirmes what we all knew anyway. As a Hearts fan, I take more pleasure in the attendance.
The 9th of August onwards will determine who should be gloating and who should keep quiet.
Incidentally, we do not think we are suddenly world beaters with the arrival of Csaba. He merely brings an organisation and dedication which has been missing at Tynecastle for some time - and what Hibs fans should remember, we still managed to beat you on various occasions without this.

You take more pleasure in the attendance? What a freaky pleasure seeker you are! I can imagine you all of next season posting:

Hearts 0 - St Mirren 2

'Oh well, we got beat but look, the attendance was 500 up on the last home game where we lost 1 -3 to Inverness. Now there's the real pleasure in forking out for a season ticket'.

As I stated, results pre 9th of August are insignificant, at least in my opinion. However, even a "Neutral Observer" should be aware of the contention between the two sets of Edinburgh fans surrounding the Barca games and attendance.

Lovely person and I don't think.
Will be redirecting his nonsense to the hobbit posts from now on unless he and a few others disappear and we can go b back to a bit of banter, not too friendly,
well know what I mean

I think you may be trying to pick a fight in a phone box son. You seem to have missed something.

If the attendance bothers you so much, then I'd address the following points:

Game played on a Thursday night (as opposed to a Sat afternoon)
Overexposure to Barca, no novelty factor anymore, therefore lesser appeal to neutrals.
Ticket prices up 25% on last year

Add to this the currently apathy felt by Hibs fans towards pre-season friendlies......

But no, You keep on obsessing yourself with the attendance son. If it makes you sleep better and gives you a self satisfied inner glow then I wouldn't have the heart to deny you this.

Jesus, our pre-season friendly attendance was bigger than yours. Sad people, no lives. Have a word, eh?

Taking all of the factors that you mentioned into consideration, was it then worth playing them?

Team in chaos. No new signings. Players being sold. Embarrasing pre-season results. Manager disagreeing with board and expected to leave. Low season ticket sales. Crisis club and laughing stock. HMFC? I think not. What goes around comes around.

#15 Attendances do matter in football. It's the main source of income. It's useful when attracting players who want to play in front of decent crowds, It's good when it comes to selling a club as it shows the potential, or otherwise, for growth. It helps attract sponsorship money

One thing Romanov has proved by playing the European games at Murrayfield is there is a good potential support out there. In time this may attract other buyers who aren't as mad. In the meantime, should the stadium go ahead, we know we can fill a 23,000 stadium.

Hibs, with on paper a similar sized fanbase, not so much. Hibs, a club that we all know is being fattened up for a sale is not going to attract someone willing to put money in if he sees the fans can't be bothered going to games - important games like the semi-final a couple of years ago or their Euro game this year.
