Hearts 0-0 Falkirk: Frail's men frustrated by Falkirk

Published Date: 22 March 2008
HEARTS suffered a damaging blow to their top-six aspirations as Falkirk prised a deserved point from Tynecastle to remain on course for their first finish in the upper half of the SPL.
In an unremarkable match at Tynecastle, both sides cancelled one another out with clear chances almost non-existent. The result sees John Hughes side remain in sixth place, three points clear of Hearts with two matches remaining before the league split.

The hosts would have enjoyed a faultless performance from the Spanish midfielder Ruben Palazuelos but his probing was not sufficient to penetrate a resilient five-man Falkirk rearguard. Even the talismanic Larry Kingston, returning from injury, toiled to fashion an opening.

Patrick Cregg and Kevin McBride largely controlled proceedings in midfield for Falkirk and helped subdue any forward movement from Hearts, leaving Gorgie enveloped by a thick air of frustration come full-time.

Kingston's reinstatement was the most intriguing of Stephen Frail's four changes from last week's draw at Love Street. Although far from match fit, the Ghanaian appearanced for the first time since December last year having overcome a foot injury and assumed an advanced role in support of striker Calum Elliot. Marius Zaliukas deputised for Christos Karipidis because of the Greek's back injury whilst Michael Stewart and Deividas Cesnauskis returned to a midfield instructed by Frail to play with a predominantly attacking thesis.

Elliot had the first chance following a loose pass from Kenny Milne, however his left-footed effort was blocked by the sliding Darren Barr. Falkirk's five-man defence was intented to deny Hearts space on the flanks but another opening presented itself through the centre on 15 minutes which left home supporters questioning referee Charlie Richmond's judgment. Saulius Mikoliunas scampered on to a through ball and unleashed a first-time shot which appeared to strike the onrushing Robert Olejnik, Falkirk's goalkeeper, on the upper arm. Although the incident took place five yards outside the penalty box, Richmond remained impassive.

Seconds later Frail replaced Cesnauskis with Audrius Ksanavicius after the former's foot injury resurfaced. The subsequent reorganisation involved Kingston retreating to midfield and Ksanavicius sitting in the hole behind Elliot, however perhaps more concerning to Hearts was Zaliukas' wayward passing from defence. Three times he ceded possession under no pressure which had an unsettling effect on those around him.

Falkirk broke from defence on 30 minutes after the influential Cregg dispossessed Kingston, but Graham Barrett's shot was collected comfortably by Steve Banks. Hearts fans complained again when Richmond denied Mikoliunas a blatant free-kick seven minutes from the interval. The Lithuanian played a neat interchange with Elliot but was barged off the ball by Barr 20 yards from Olejnik's goal. Neither the referee nor his assistants deemed the challenge worthy of a foul, as was the case in the 44th minute when Cregg's over-the-ball tackle on Robbie Neilson also went unpunished.

The second half was no less turgid an affair than the first with both sides lacking creativity and panache in attack. The situation, for Hearts at least, was becoming increasingly desperate with each passing minute as they sought victory to aid prospects of a top-six finish. Jamie Mole replaced Elliot and Falkirk introduced both Pedro Moutinho and Arnau Riera, but in the end it was the travelling support which left the stadium singing.

They knew, as did their Edinuburgh counterparts, that a point is of little use to Hearts.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Banks; Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Mikoliunas, Stewart, Palazuelos, Cesnauskis; Kingston; Elliot. Subs: Basso, Tall, Thomson, Jonsson, Ksanavicius 15 (for Cesnauskis), Screpis 90 (for Kingston), Mole 68 (for Elliot).

Falkirk (5-4-1): Olejnik, Ross, Aafjes, Barr, Milne, Scobbie; Arfield, Cregg, McBride, Finnigan; Barrett. Subs: Supple, Moutinho 72 (for Finnigan), Latapy, Clarke, Riera 81 (for McBride), Mitchell, Moffat.

Attendance: 16,682.

Referee: Charlie Richmond.

What a magnificent match that had some great skill on show. This was a credit to Scotland's SPL.

The Liths on show are a great asset to HoM and they should continue to improve in the coming seasons.

Well done to both teams for an entertaining Saturday.

Bit previous #1. Either of Hearts/Falkirk/Aberdeen can still make top 6. In fact I may just stick a tenner on Hearts, as Falkirk and Aberdeen have to play each other.

Yet again Elliot was horrendous, That small lithuanian was hopeless and Zaliukas - awful!

In a game Hearts needed to win they played with one striker, one terrible striker, and all they did was lump high balls up to him all day.

That was possibly one of the worst games I have ever witnessed!

Clearout in the summer and a new manager!

This can't be true about young Elliot. Frail has said that he is the next young Scottish prospect as is Mole, with Driver in the England set up oh and of course you have Copil and Branny to fall back on if these guys are not up to scratch.

I thought Falkirk were a well-drilled side with a number of really hard-working players who deserved to get a point.Hearts have too many off-form and /or underachieving personnel in the side to break down moderately competent opposition.
It seems as though Vlad has decided to let this season go in the hope that UKIO bank can survive till the summer when he might just persuade someone with a reputation to become manager. So listen cheerfully as the Hearts media team tell us we can still make the top six;safe in the knowledge that this squad has no intention of playing anymore matches this season against the Hibs, the Rangers or the Celtic.

There is no need for HoM to buy players.

I been told that HoM have many great U19 players that are some of the best in Scotland. Players that are easily on a par with Mole and Elliot.

The future lies with the great HoM youngsters.

Does anybody really give a f*** anymore??

Romanov ruined our club a long time ago yet people still beleive in him. The team now is a pile of s***, half of them would be lucky to get a game for Cowdenbeath. Our only real assests Berra and kingston will be sold off like all the others in the summer and I'm guessing the only players we bring in will be from...Kaunas.

Seriously get a grip on reality, we are a shambles and we will continue to be until Romanov does one.

It actually sickens me when i read in the papers from Frail etc - " We can make the top 6!!". Really? I don't think FBK Kauno will supply our best players, certainly not if we are still in League of Champions in August.

Kaunas was meant to be a feeder club for Hearts, a vehicle for selling best Lithuanian players once they had done us a turn. With Kaunas being guaranteed a Euro spot, seems we are a training club for them this season, we get their borderline players and see if they improve with us.

#57 - A backlash - are you kidding??????? Our supporters are far too spineless for that. Too gullible too, when calls for a boycott in the transfer window (when it may have done some good) Vlad said he would get a new manager, that we needed new players and all our lapdogs went back in their baskets.

Me - st time in years won't be getting a season ticket. Not a fairweather supporter as had a 20 year season ticket with some bad times, but NOTHING like this feeling of being at mercy of an absentee owner who just does not care.

Just when I thought we couldn't have a worse striker than Elliot, they took him off and introduced Mole, I was wrong of course, he is worse than Elliot, a lot worse. Neilson was his usual garbage self, Zaliukas was rubbish, the tiny Lithuanian was a disaster, and Stewart, I'm sure that in his mind he is a wonderful player, it's the rest of us that are wrong. As for Frail, tactically, unaware Frail, you are very well named, Frail - renew my season ticket, you must be joking, I doubt if I'll be back, I'll become an armchair supporter like LATJ.

My god do you people not have lives??

Certainly some kind of mental disorder judging by the crap that comes out of the gobs of these t!ts.

It's only a game of football after all but the obsession with Hearts, i just can't quite put my finger on it. I couldn't care less if Hibs lost 8-0 today or any other game other than when we meet in the derby.
It'll never change so no point in going on about it, complete sad cases but guess they have been all their lives so they are hardly likely to change now..

With the 3 points needed today badly the team were a big let down. Thought the starting lineup a bit baffling but pleased that Kingston was in it. The cyical side of me though thinks maybe this was to over shadow Zaliukas being back in. Don't think he should kick another ball for Hearts with what's gone on with him in the past.

I would keep maybe 4-5 of the players and just start afresh in the summer when the new manager gets into town.

How pathetic to identify yourself around who you dislike as opposed to who you do support. What a waste of space you are, you parents (siblings no doubt) must be very, very ashamed of you. You say that you were "brought up" yet it is obvious you were not raised, educated or taught anything. Perhaps your mum and dad were too busy orally servicing sailors down on Leith docks to be bothered with you.
On a great day for Cardiff and in a story about a great yet tragic footballer you have reared your flaccid self out the the quagmire you call a life to belch your unwanted opinion at the feet of those much better than you.
How dare you.

Sad pathetic lonely Hobo's, sitting at home with a bottle of 20/20 hoping and praying that the Great Heart of Midlothian go under.

To all sad little boy's posting on a Hearts story... there is more chance of Wallace Mercer's son buying up your shi*ty little team and selling Fester Road to turn it into a drug rehab clinic than there is of Hearts going under.

Goodnight you pathetic wee a*seholes!

The thing that I don't understand. Serious question here...

WHY DO YOU CARE so much about the Heart of Midlothian that you are even here?

Envy?
Jealousy?
Wee team mentality?

Seriously, why? Why do you have this facination with your city rivals?

Too many players were flat today. Kingston needs a game or two but even at that he was still the only player we had today who looked capable of doing anything about Falkirk's very defensive line-up.

Elliot was garbage as usual, but worst of all today I thought was Stewart, he just goes from bad to worse, what an embarrassment he has become.

As an occassional contributor here, I mustsay that the Hibs fans should be having a field day. It's not often that they can. I remember the late 60's and early 70's. They had a field day then. They have been few and far between since. The're having a better season than us at the moment.

The essence of football is allowing supporters to have a dream. Folowig a club through thick and thin. Not supporting 'anyone that plays against club A or B'
The big dichotemy (sp) between Hearts and Hibs at present is Hibs have been burned by scheisters (sp) in the past and nearly went to the wall. The appetite for risk in terms of debt is understandable. Most reasonable Hibs fans (not the 10 serial posters on here) do not want to see Hearts go out of business.
Most Hearts fans understand the aversion Hibs have to debt - for the reasons above. Heart'sfans are becoming averse to debt as well.
Hearts and Hibs need each other. Hibs model is debt free. Hearts is messy. Hibs has worked this season. But the beauty of it all is that next season, it all starts again and who knows what will happen?
I do realise that i will be shot down in flames for sentimentality. I accept these accusations - I'm a fitba'fan. I am also a Hearts fan.

yes you are all right , we hibs fans should not gloat at the sh8t herts are in.
We all know the herts fans would not act like this if it were us. Sorry.

Maybe when you all admit to yourselves that things are getting serious and take off the rose tinted specs, we might offer some support instead .
We need strong edinburgh teams but everything points to you going out of business and yet you all believe a few new players are all you need.
£37,000,000 just does not disapear and you are not going to clear it.
What will be your losses this season?
(the worst for a few years), another 10-15 million?
Its a business losing millions with now way of clearing the debt , who in thier right minds can afford these losses every year?

I agree with your opinions.

It doesn't matter what team posters support. What matters is what they say and what they mean.

Hearts are in the hands of asset removers.
It means the same when said by any fan.

I don't thnk you'll get many Hearts Supporters apologising for InsideOutside and to be fair, they don't have to. Remember that he obviously thinks its OK to say these things and that puts him in a different place from the rest of us.

Incidently I think he's FitO'TheWalkJambo. I remember somebody a while back saying FOTWJ lived in a cave on Leith Links. He only ever hs one real point to make and that is, "Why are you so obsessed with Hearts"

Sir, a moment of your time please.
Have you had an opportunity to reflect on your postings referred to earlier today??
Can we assume a period of quiet introspection as you ponder the "humanity" of your remarks.
May your mother have a nice day Sir....more than most, she deserves it !!!

Sorry to make it worse but I am a Hibs supporter. All you have done by pointing out this creatures' failings as a human being is to invite more abuse from the subnormal.

I maintain though that most Hearts supporters do not live in the same world as this Jambo or those who are the same way inclined. Thankfully not many. Mind you they'll probably think I'm patronising them.
