Published Date: 11 July 2008
LASZLO Csaba is expected to be appointed the new manager of Hearts early next week after the Ugandan international coach held talks with the club in Edinburgh yesterday.
The 44-year-old toured the training facilities at Riccarton and was also at Tynecastle, although it is not the first-time the much-travelled Csaba has visited Edinburgh.

Hearts fans will remember him best from the time he clashed with then manager John Robertson during a Uefa Cup tie between Ferencvaros and the Edinburgh club at Murrayfield in 2004. Csaba was in charge of the Hungarian side at the time and claimed Robertson had kicked him after the match, which Hearts lost 1-0. Robertson countered by saying Csaba had stood on his foot.

Vladimir Romanov, the Hearts owner, has proved more interested in other details of Csaba's career, however.

He has impressed in his present role as Uganda coach and narrowly failed to lead the Cranes to the African Nations Cup, which was held at the start of this year. He has also held coaching posts with Borussia Mönchengladbach and assisted Lothar Matthäus when the German was manager of Hungary.

Csaba acquired a diploma in coaching from Cologne University after his playing career was ended by a knee injury when he was only 27. He went onto become a distinguished manager of Hungarian club Ferencvaros, where he won two league titles.

Csaba can speak English, German, Hungarian, Spanish and also French. He is known to be a hard worker and reacted enthusiastically to the challenge of managing Uganda on his arrival in 2006.

"I was born in a time of insurgency," he said, having agreed to succeed Tomislav Sivic – who had resigned before even leading Uganda in a single match. "I have got enough experience so nothing can intimidate me."

Such bravado will come in useful at Hearts and in his dealings with Romanov. Csaba has declared himself keen to manage Hearts and take up another exacting assignment in Edinburgh. He is set to be unveiled at the start of next week, and his first match in charge could be Monday's friendly against Glentoran in Belfast.

Hearts fitness coach Tom Ritchie and sports director Anatoly Korobochka have been in charge of pre-season training since the players returned more than a fortnight ago.

The last Tynecastle manager to have started and finished a league campaign was Craig Levein, in 2003-04. Romanov arrived the following season and another seven managers have come and gone, with the latest, Stephen Frail, having ended his association with the club on Wednesday. Just 24 hours later the Hearts official website confirmed the club had been granted permission to speak to Csaba.

It means the long process of appointing a permanent manager at Tynecastle is drawing to a close. The search began in January after a poor sequence of results over Christmas and earlier this week Romanov said it was unlikely he would be Scottish, since it was difficult for them to excel in their country. Now it seems Romanov has got his wish for a worldly manager unaffected by local issues.

The Ugandan FA has reluctantly accepted that Csaba will move to Tynecastle after two years in Africa. "We know he will leave but what can we do," said Ugandan FA general secretary Charles Masembe. "He has done a very good job here and we wish him well in Scotland."

But not everyone in Uganda is convinced he is making the right career move. "I told Csasba that it would be a wrong move for him, but you could see his heart is elsewhere," said Ugandan FA president Lawrence Mulindwa. "His heart is not fully with us and I cannot force him to stay. Maybe it is the money factor."

Hearts have already agreed compensation with the Uganda FA for Csaba, who had two years still to run of his four-year deal.

He is apparently on less than £50K a year, so he couldn't have been difficult to deal with. Self respect doesn't pay the bills you know, just ask Stevie Frail.

A world class coach for a world class team. The plan is coming together at last........

Good luck to the guy, he'll need it.

Regardless of anyones thoughts on Hearts and Romanov, it would be good for the game if we had a strong 3rd(or 4th) force.

Agree with the point on their fans needing grounded. 2nd for a season and 2 Scottish cups in how long and they think they are a force to be reckoned with. I would miss the trips to Swinecastle though, nothing better than a good win there(other than a good win at Ibrox of course....)

#11 Hearts have been the only team to attempt to challenge the OF on a consisent basis in 20 years. The only club willing to spend some money on the team. And the one that has contributed more to Scotland's European coefficient than any other non-OF team. We've also supplied more Scotland players than any other in recent years and are the only club still showing any ambition to challenge the status quo. I can understand why you don't like us. We're a threat.

As for 3rd force - it's not something made up by Jambos. Statistically speaking Hearts are the 3rd force and have been for a while.

#14 and #15 - How sweet. Look at you two. And if it wasn't for Hearts you'd never have met.

Greetings fellow Jambos...although we've closed in on two or three other guys, it does look pretty certain that Laszlo Csaba will be our NEW MANAGER.
If that is the case, then the press conference becomes intruiging, because a sure as eggs are eggs, the first journalist to get to his feet is going to ask if he has full authority over team matters.
If he replies in the affirmative, I'm on the blower to the ticket office to renew.
If he ain't... more of the same, and I spend Saturdays fishing & Golfing.

I feel I should make a comment here, just to stop the anti-Hearts love in for five seconds. But I said what I had to say yesterday when this first broke:
- don't know they guy
- obviously not my, or anyone elses, first choice
- doesn't necessarily mean he's no good, has a decent (if short) track record
- will judge him on his actions if he comes in.

That is all. Thank you for listening. You can go back to hating me now.

All the negative comments, particularly from morons such as bring them on shows Hearts are news which we should take as a compliment. If it was hibs for instance, no-one would care.

#14. Rangers fans disgrace Scotland at every opportunity, continue to sing sectarian songs and feel the need to constantly sing about a battle that took place in another country over 300 years ago. It is also a fact that Hearts' have to pay extra to employ more policing and stewarding at Tynecastle when you knuckledraggers visit. In short, you are scum.

"11 Hearts have been the only team to attempt to challenge the OF on a consisent basis in 20 years. "

Ive read some misguided rubbish on these forums but thats the best yet.

Apart from finishing 2nd (running a £10 million wage bill) and a few close 3rds you've been at best a distant 3rd. The only reason you finished 3rd was running up £20 million debts.

So frankly it was fools gold and your team was a failure long before Romanov appeared.

If Hearts fans think its bad now wait until they have to face up to the reality of a huge debt. I predict 1st division (not for the first time) and bust.

It wont happen overnight but once Romanov has tried everything to make Hearts into the money making scheme he wants and has failed (which he will) then its goodnight.

ah yes, the usual predictable puddle of drool is in evidence here. so many supposed experts on all things, so little of any substance to say.

anyway, the agony keeps getting drawn out, reports vary about when he might be announced as the new manager. tomorrow, over the weekend, early next week, to coincide with the reappearance of halley's comet.... i made that last one up obviously.

i would rather it was done now. the more times there is between now and him signing on the dotted line means more chance of some berserk thing happening to kybosh the whole deal.

end our torment and let the torment of the flumps commence.

Good news, a head coach with experience is exactly what we need. No doubt he is not the first choice but he has a track record. Two Hungarian titles is not so bad. I also remember that we could not get near Ferencvaros in the game at Murrayfield a couple of years ago - so he can set up teams to play football. Looking forward to the announcement on next week - fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the negative comments on the thread reinforcing my siege mentality. Two season tickets for me when the announcement is made!

Ah, the usual daily slavers from the non JT contingent I see. It's comforting, like the sun rise, and the ebb and flow of the tide. I do love my daily dose of "administration", "Vlad's mad" and "relegation". Perhaps one of our friends could do me the honour of a "tick tock" and I can complete my "Obsessed with Hearts" bingo card for the today? House!

Anyway, good to see that we've finally got a man to lead the troops next season. Not an earth shattering appointment by any means, but should provide the stability needed, and hopefully has some fresh ideas. Maybe something like fitting Nade with blinkers so that he can't see McDonald's for instance.......

Absolute waste of time. Hearts are obviously a welcome parachute for the guy, which he is grabbing with both hands, in the full knowledge that he will not have executive control over team affairs. Utterly nonsensical team selections will continue to prove the point. Ruinov treats us all with utter contempt.

So many Hobos on here today!

What is the point in the first 15 or so posts? It could be more, I got bored reading them, Next time I want to stare at bitter p1sh I'll check the urinal after a pint or two of 80-/.

Good news that a managerial appointment seems to be imminent... Been here before as i recall but fingers crossed eh?

To the dribbling, brain-dead wee 4rseholes at the start of the thread who believe that we hearts fans need taken down a peg or two and should be relegated... Aye very good girls but if that was to happen the only time your stadiums would be full would be when the Old Firm come to town and there would be no derbies, that what you want?

Taken down a peg or two? That one cracks me up, two years of abuse and diatribe from the lowest forms of scum on earth on these threads about tick, tock, flats and Tescos and you think we need taken down a peg or two?

Two and a bit years of hearing about how we are going to go bust, debt is unmanageable, Jambos saying they wont renew because they are disgruntled about the way the club is being run, two years of "your stadium won't be built". Two years of Sad Sergina, months of Riley (pin down) Hamish Hee haaawing a lot of cr4p about things he know nowt about?

Oh aye it is the jambos that have been the arrogant to55ers recently right enough isn't it?

Tell you what though after the abuse that we have had to endure from you bitter little tw4ts... You think we were arrogant before?... Needed taking down a peg or two???... Seriously just wait and see what we will be like if we get it right again this season boys...

YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW, EH GUYS?

I see the pant-staining has begun already! Successful coach in more than one country and at international level (Scotland got within a goal of Euros, same as Uganda got within the Cup of Nations), but obviously if the great wisdom of Hibs/Celtic/Rangers fans says he's cr*p then obviously we'll be relegated this season.........

Not seen this many random OF and other supporter comments on a Hearts thread for ages. Wonder why that could be? And as for OF supporters calling Jambos arrogant - best laugh I've had all week.

You'll all be eating your words come the end of the season if this guy is appointed and if he actually gets the choice of who plays (jury still out on that IMO). Except you won't be eating your words because you're all cowards who will have gone back into hiding......

Oh i see... Funny that they are so interested in what such a small and unthreatening club like ours is up to.

I sh1t you not mate, I have had it up to the hairline with these f4nnies and if (Yes Riley you weird little internet troll IF) we do get it right again (we did before so let's not discount the possibility) then i will be giving it Charlie Big Bananas constantly in recompense for every second of my life that i have been treated to the inner workings of the minds of some of the most f*cked up pathetic little wasters in Scotland bleating b0llox about our club.

It is not even a case of being worried about pride before a fall this time around as the cr4p that has been flung our way recently we could never come close to evening the score.

Jamboy,

Good morning bud.

The Jambos WERE a wee bity arrogant when things were going well though. We were told that Hibs v Hearts was no longer a big game anymore, it was Hearts and the Old Firm. And thats even before any of the Wee team c r@p.

I think a lot of the abuse came off the back of all this.

Morning each...

I'll make this brief as I'll no doubt be castigated for daring to have an opinion....

Looks like the yams may finally be about to appoint their new head coach...

As expected hes full of the "I wont be bullied" lines etc.. However only time will tell.

The guy has some sort of track record and it shouldnt take too long for the Hearts support to work out if he is indeed going to be his own man or if he is just a "yes" man after a half decent wage & a more high profile job. Time will tell..

103

Boo81,

11/07/2008 11:38:22
Fair comment hibbyspurs. Hopefully Romanov may finally realize that the only way things are going to work is if he butts out. If another manager goes i can only imagine how long it would take this time to find a replacement.

I can honestly say on behalf of Celtic fans that we do not and have never thought of Hearts as a genuine force to be concerned about in the title race.
Yes you get the odd tricky game and defeat, but that happens at Aberdeen, Dun Utd, Hibs & Motherwell.

You lot really need to get over your 10 game run 2 years ago!

118 Jamboy,

Good post old chap. 3 years of opposing fans claiming Hearts fans to be arrogant! What on earth have we had to be arrogant about lately? No, the arrogance has come from those whose main agenda is a wish for our demise. Ok, we revelled in the first quarter of the first full Romanov season but hey, who wouldn't have given what we were watching compared to umpteen years of lesser fare.

Here's to the coming season, you just never know what's in store. (Except for the fact that we will still be in business, much to the chagrin of those who post their usual tripe on here)

D'you think he really can butt out? His past record would indicate to me that he will find that very difficult to do.

The other thing I find interesting about this probable appointment is that if I've read right Vlad has had far less involvement in securing this guys services (i.e. he came to Edinburgh to be interviewed by club "officals" rather than being summonsed to Lithuiania to meet the grat man himself).....

Maybe just maybe someone somewhere who has the ability to catch a hold of Vlads leash (most likely the UBIG board) have interviened & told him to keep his mouth closed?
109

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 11/07/2008 11:47:56
Whilst i would've prefered someone who understands the british game, I'm not unhappy about this appointment. The guy set up a Ferencvaros team with no stars and comprehensively beat us in a game that was a must-win game for us to go through a few years back. Also you dont get to manage any national side without a having something and by all accounts he was being sounded out about a european national job as well. Finally, he sounds like he is from the "winners mentality" corner which is the thing we have lacked most in recent years i.e. playing career cut prematurely and then went on to study the game determined to be a success in management (parallels to Mourinho albeit not the injury). If we can add a couple of Scots (not Mafioso, Vlad) to the coaching staff to ensure he understands our game then I think we may have a big improvement on our hands. Give me a date for the main stand to be redeveloped and I may actually crack a smile
110

Boo81,

11/07/2008 11:48:20

From JKB

In the after-math of our worst away performance in five full years, one begins to wonder about our German-Hungarian manager Csaba and about his technical team.

In each single competition at which we’ve had the luck (or should that be; misfortune) to participate, it has always been a variation of the same routine heartbreak.

Now, we just added pure embarrassment to magnify the pain.
Is it time to call a stop on Csaba’s often ineffectual and juvenile tactics? What of his technical bench and their reckless and ultimately pitiable decisions? Many Super division coaches could have done better.

Woe unto our Ugandan pride and woe unto the Cranes if it’s more of the same in future.
And the future is as close as Angola’s visit. One can only hope the highly competent Angolans won’t see through our pathetic strategy.

A walloping hurts so much more when you’re playing at home.

When I was five my Daddy took me down to Easter Road
He lifted me up high upon his shoulder
Hibernian!
And he told me when he watched the Hibs he never felt the cold
And I know what he meant when I got older

(Chorus)
Hail or snow or thunderstorms I'd go
Hi-Bee Hibernian
Hi-Bee Hibernian
Hibernian
Hi-Bee Hibernian

Every week rain or shine, win or lose or draw
We'd go and see the Hibees play together
Hibernian!
And I cried my eyes out once or twice when they cancelled 'cause of snow
I'd have had them play in any weather

(Chorus)
Hail or snow or thunderstorms I'd go
Hi-Bee Hibernian
Hi-Bee Hibernian
Hibernian
Hi-Bee Hibernian

Oh the green and white, the white and green the only team for me
I've always been a Hibernian soldier
Hibernian!
And I'll take my kids, like my Dad did, to Easter Road one day
To see the only team that's worth supporting
Hibernian
(Chorus)
Hail or snow or thunderstorms I'd go
Hi-Bee Hibernian
Hi-Bee Hibernian

Hi-Bee Hibernian

Come off it doubters. The greatest wee man on earth, Vlad the wee magnificent, said it would be a big name manager. He, in is wisdom has gone where few would wander, yes he went to the mighty.... The jokes just keep on coming, I don't know how long my sides will hold out!

What I will put money on is further disgraceful behaviour at some point over the season from Rangers fans. Money on hearts going bust in the near future would be a wasted bet- anybody who has the first clue about finance (I've got several, it's my job) who's read the accounts (I have) knows all talk of going bust is pure fantasy.

Gotta laugh at posters like 165.

I'm not overawed by this appointment, but looking at his credentials they look fairly promising. He still has a better and more prominent coaching history than many of the managers plying their trade in the SPL today - Ferencvaros, Munchengladbach - clubs with history and prestige, not to mention assistant coach with Hungary etc.

If you took for example Mixu's coaching history into consideration you'd hardly be blown away - Cowdenbeath, some Finnish diddies. Or Gus McPherson or Calderwoodor Brewster. Even Strachan's record pre-Celtic was utterly guff.

The fact is he is being slated as he is unknown in this country. We don't know what he will bring to the table, but nor did Celtic fans really know when Venglos was brought in for example.

I guess none of you have bothered to find out that of the eight goals Uganda scored enroute to being one goal short of qualifying, five were from the penalty spo. I bet you also haven't found out that in two years as Ugandan coach, Csaba hasn't won away from home and has scored just once on his travels.
Finally, I bet you are too busy trading insults with Rangers, celtic, Motherwell etc to notice that Idi Amin left Uganda 30 years ago, in 1979, and died in exile in 2003 in Saudi Arabia, hence you keep referring to us as Idi's guys !

Although technically his credentials look promising, I remember the tactics of his Ferencevaros side at Murrayfield - pretty lwo to say the least and I hope we wouldn't see that at Hearts.
