Hearts hoping Ghana don't ask too much of Kingston

Published Date: 20 March 2008
HEARTS will ask the Ghanaian FA to tread carefully with Larry Kingston next week after the midfielder was summoned to London for an international friendly against Mexico.
Ghana coach Claude le Roy has named Kingston in his 18-man squad for the match at Fulham's Craven Cottage next Wednesday despite the player having gone six weeks without action.

Kingston's last match was his country's African Nations Cup quarter-final victory over Nigeria on February 3. He sustained a foot injury during the game and only returned to full training with his club earlier this week.

Nonetheless, Le Roy is determined to involve the 27-year-old against Mexico, which is causing concern amongst Stephen Frail and the Hearts coaching staff at Riccarton.

Kingston remains touch and go for Saturday's vital SPL fixture against Falkirk and, should he fail to play, would then face the prospect of being asked to play international football without any exposure at club level.

"We'll be in touch with the Ghanaian FA and we'll send documents down with Larry to say he hasn't played since the African Nations Cup. We would ask them to respect that," Frail told the Evening News today.

"If he goes, we want him back in one piece and ready for the next Hearts game. There's not a lot we can do about his international commitments, as long as he comes through unscathed."

Kingston is in contention to play against Falkirk in what would be his first Hearts outing since December last year. The club consider the player vital to their end-of-season run-in and have been slowly nursing him through a rehabilitation programme.

"His injury is coming on although Saturday might just come too soon for him," conceded Frail. "We aren't ruling him out but there will come a point where we have to make the decision." Le Roy views the Mexico friendly as an important part of Ghana's preparations for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, hence the inclusion of Kingston and other stars such as Chelsea's Michael Essien.

"There is no longer a term as friendly in our dictionary," said the Frenchman. "We consider every game very important and if you know Mexico's worth and strength, then you would not want to say it is just another friendly."

Dundee United's Prince Buaben has earned a maiden call-up to the Ghana squad, with Le Roy adding: "It is always important to give new players a chance to prove to all that the door is always open but the ideal way is not to change the team entirely.

"It is only in such games that the levels of new players can be checked and tried for future assignments."

If the player is "For Sale" then he should be allowed to play international football.

Many soccer scouts watch these sort of matches.

Kingston seems to have the remarkable ability to play for his international team but be injured for Hearts. Is this a symptom of Vlad-flu?

What's the bets on him returning with an injury from the Ghana game ?

A bit of truth would go a long way to appeasing the fans, Mr Frail.

Seems a bit odd that as soon as we hear talk of getting him back in the team he's on international duty.

If personally I was a Hearts fan and Kingston was away playing for Ghana (again) having not kicked a ball for his club side for what about 4 months or so yet managed to go away to the African Cup of Nations, I think I would be a bit miffed and want to know the reason why.

You better watch out, this vlad-flu sounds like it could hit at any time. You could be too ill to go to work, but well enough to go to the pub at night.

Last nights report on 107 was that the injury to Driver was not as bad as first thought. Today disaster.
If it's all genuine I wish him luck as he has been pretty good all season.

We are better with him in the team IMO.

The question that's bugging me is, its looking possible that Kingston will be back for the weekend. Presumably he'll play on the right of midfield in place of Miko.
Now that Drivers out, who on earth could possibly fill in for him???

Some of you guys are morons. We've known that he has been training with the first team for a week now alothugh he hasn't played yet, so he is deemed fit.

It is hardly Vlad flu just becasuse he has been called up for his international team. He's hardly Cesnauskis, and missed a massive game for his country in the African nations because of this injury.

Totally off topic but i thought i'd put this out there anyway.

I have been told by a reliable source (works within the club) that Mark McGhee will be officially appointed Hearts manager at the end of May. It's apparently all done and dusted but McGhee is keen to see this season out with Motherwell.

I can't reveal this source for obvious reasons but i have obtained a few bits and pieces in the past from the same source which have always been true.

Just passing on what i've heard so please don't shoot the messenger.

You people with your stupid/childish conspiracy theories really need to get out and experience the real world more often.

Why should the Ghanaian FA not include Kingston in their squad? They don't know what his level of fitness is, as Hearts have stated, they will now be making the Ghanaian FA aware of the situation.

If you were at Paisley on Saturday, you would have seen the extent of Driver's injury - but wait, I forgot that not many of the regular whingers on here actually go to the games.

#19
Sorry but there are things called telephones in this day and age and also medical notes can be passed onto the international teams, so to suggest they dont know his level of fitness is a cop out. They will know how far rehabilitated he is.

22

Anglo Jambo,

Chorley 20/03/2008 12:33:49
Yes Driver will be big a big miss. If Kingston is injury free even without match fitness must still be better than Mko or Chesney at present. I would like to try Berra at left back, he has the pace and is a good defender with Wallace on left wing. Tall at centre back with Karapidis. Give young Thompson a chance at right back. Give Screpis a chance alongside Palazeulos, up front if Nade is avaiable then must play as he links up well with Kingston. Now is the time to give Makela a chance. Give him a run like Elliot got, Elliot maybe still be one for future but so far he is not good enough this season. As for his goals against a poor Inverness, both were gifts.

Another voice,

As many have stated numerous times on these threads there is something very badly wrong with number, variety and timing of injuries to key players.

After kingston got injured in the warm up against nigeria the ghana team doctor diagnosed it as a week or two out. Vlads doctor says 6 weeks. Thats quite a difference in medical opinion regarding recovery time and quite possibly diagnosis of the injury.

On saturday hearts need the best 11 available to the club playing from the start. They need to be setup tactically to attack falkirk, getting player(s) from midfield to support the two strikers and the full backs pushing up to support the midfield. If frail can't do this then he should put his hands up and walk.

If frail plays two defensive midfielders (ruben and Jonsson) together and Miko on a wing we are done for.

The Guardian this morning also stated "McGhee is frontrunner for the mangers job" with levein second, why would thay say he is a frontrunner if it was just a guess or speculation? it sounds like there is something there that the press have caught hold of.

I also saod weeks back id been told from a reliable person that McGhee would be in charge and had basically accpeted the post already but wanted to remain at motherwell till the end of the season.

Another thing i was also told by same person which i do find a little harder to believe, is it is actually mcGhee who has requested certain players go already, as he doesnt see them in his plans, I find this hard to believe that a manager currently in charge of another club could ask for players from another club (albeit his future employers) to be sold etc.
29

Chas Niceass,

20/03/2008 12:48:20
I'm no medical expert but I did say on here after the Ghana semi that Kingston would be out for some time, I dont think they are faking this one.
Basically he was injured before he went, he played I believe not fully fit for Ghana, he more than aggravated the injury, it was actually done during a warm up, proving how brittle it was at the time, the consequence, massive amounts of ice being applied, Eurosport close up was excellent, it is taking a long time to heal. Ankle foot injuries are worse due to the weight of the body on them, no conspiracy for once, bad luck, but Hearts seem too ready to let him go to Ghana, that does make me suspicious that its an advertisement.

Paranoid John from Midlothian,

What part of that is hard for you to digest

RE: McGhee as manager.

If what has been said is true then he would make a very good manager. The guy is not daft and will demand total control over player recruitment, training and selection.

The only worry i have in some regards about McGhee is that he tends to jump ship far too quickly. A rolling 12 month contract would probably be the best idea for both parties.

The problem for most hearts fans is that they will not find out who will be the manager until after the renewal for season tickets has expired.
33

GrahamL,

20/03/2008 13:02:29
#32 I've said this before, an appointment like McGhee would be great for entirely non-football related reasons.. A man who knows whats been going on at Tynie and who's left another job to come here, would be a real indication that Vlad wasn't going to intefere. Whether he's the best man for the job or not doesn't matter, the signal that would be sent out by him taking the job would make a lot of fans very very happy.

With regards to the physio situation, season we won the cup, the guy that replaced Rae, was his name Oliver? cant remember anyway, he was basically hounded out by a Lithuanian doc, who dealt in double standards, the Lithuanians opinion counted for an awful lot more than the Scots though he had far less experience. He was telling the Scots guy what to do whilst doing the opposite himself, basically the job was untenable and all the stuff regarding the stick was true.
I got all that back then from an eye witness of impeccable credibility, a devoted Hearts fan and still a season ticket holder, who has since moved on in her own career.

I'm not going as far back as the who-dunnit capers of George Burley being sacked onwards through the riccarton three - players will come and go, get injured and like Paul Ritchie (pre-Vlad), play contract-hardball to the endangerment of their career.

BUT ever since Craig Gordon was told to say he was ill and then he was a sub; laughing and joking with the media whilst warming up - my trust levels [on which player is really injured and which player has a dispute and which player needs to be played for exposure or self-indulgence on the part of our ruler] have been low.

Cesny-gate, Makela in exile, the Bednar files....the weirdest is trying to almost hypnotise the hearts support into believing Calum Elliot is our marauding saviour...and the hardest to take was seeing Velicka being sold after the uk transfer deadline. Not to mention Kurskis imo accidentally on purpose getting himself sent off when Vlad was insisting that he starts the matches....Benny-useless seemed to be on the same mission the last time he was brought on - thump a player, get suspended so you don't have to play.

Not to mention Pinilla on ice.

So, I ask myself, do I really believe anything...
YES...I believe the teamsheet once it is put out: apart from that its all like 'the boy that cried wolf'!!

Im inclined to agree with Huggs's point at #16 actually. If it's good enough for the ugly sisters to pull players out of international friendlies at a whim with some made up excuse then why not any other team?

If he's still recovering then that should be reason enough for Hearts to pull him. If he's fit enough to travel & play for his country next week then surely he must be ready for an SPL game this weekend?

Strange that hes unfit for the leauge game but will be able to play on the bigger international stage.... Shop window me thinks!

After all with the split a mere three games away and youse in 7th and your upcoming opponents in 6th this is quite possible the most meaningful game you have left. Victory against Falkirk & I would say youse a virtually gauranteed to be top 6 come the split, lose and your 99% certain to be bottom half. A draw I'd make yous 2nd favs but not impossible. If ever there was a time Hearts needed to play thier best possible tem this season then its Saturday & if Kingstons even close to fit he should be at least on the bench?

Mind having said all that, I'll still be cheering for the Bairns to beat youse come Saturday (naturally)!!

Agreed about pulling him out.

But wasnt there a new ruling brought about a year or so ago because the OF were continually doing this as well as other teams pullling there players from internationals for their countries, was it not changed so the country has first option now and if they want the player theres not much the club can do about it

I may be wrong i just remember something vaguely regrding all the carry on with players being pulled for midweek internationals yet playing on the saturday.

Prof,

For the conspiracy mob - Think you'll find that this issue affects a lot of clubs much bigger than Hearts, but the FIFA rule is that players must turn out for international squads even if they don't play.
Hibs not having any international players are of course unaffected by this.
55

Chas Niceass,

20/03/2008 13:44:21
#52 Your right about the ruling, they aren't meant to play on the following Sat if they have missed the international on the Weds. Associations and clubs though seem to be loathe to anger one another, the rule though seems to have been applied as a form of pressure to ensure fair play even if it is hardly enforced.
#51 At this point in time I'd say Aberdeen were favourites for the last spot, St Mirren and Falkirk at home, slumping ICT away.

In the absence of anybody else McGhee would be alright, but far from convinced by the hype of one semi decent season with Motherwell amidst a sea of mediocre teams in the SPL.

McGhee was hardly mentioned prior to this year when clubs were looking for managers (ok the odd mention as dark horse purely on the basis that he was Scottish)but this year he has been hyped beyond all belief adn touted for every job going.

Well that will be that then, the fountain of all knowledge has spoken, a bitter wee hobo, has declared with all his wisdom mcghee wont be coming or levien.

Could you also look into your crystal boll0x and tell us the lottery numbers as well

Chas Niceass,

Does anyone seriously believe the McGhee story, who would put money on it?
The rumour about the Greek manager seemed more likely to me.

#70 Mid-town(and table bound) Hibee, nearly all managers will liaise with their board regarding team selection and performance, any slippage of vlad's kung fu grip will be a step forward - Frail handing the reigns over to the likes of McGhee will be even better - I'd like to think that investment in the team will improve once the real manager is on board. If this is the case, we just need to be patient before we all become outpatients.

Alright Lenny, to be fair the boy has done ok of late, but he doesn't look a natural, in fact just the opposite. The one at Tynie was far from his worst, he seemed to be scared of Brewster against the Dons, strange for such an imposing figure.

Something for you Jambos to do if your bored, most of the Hibs fans I know have already filled it in.

Did Levein not leave because of Romanov?

As for McGhee, I find it hard to see why he would take such a massive step down? I also cant see him sitting back and letting Vlad pick the team every week?
80

#1GGTTH,

20/03/2008 14:38:36
#74 if it makes you feel better then keep believing that. Im sure there is no doubt that managers discuss possible signings, performances with the board. I cant imagine David Murray and Eddie Thomson popped into their respective dressing rooms with the team sheets on Sunday past?
81

huggs,

20/03/2008 14:40:07
#79 Yes your right Levein seen the writing on the wall before any of us
And Vlad wont be picking the team getting worried ?

Think youll find levein left for "Personal" reasons not romanov, more a case of he was messin around if you know what i mean, and he wanted as far away as possible
84

THE BPRENTICE,

79 #1GGTTH, was sought after by Leicester becasue of his good record with Hearts getting them 3rd spot two years running - Levein wanted the new challenge and maybe the uncertainty of Romanov taking over wouldn't have helped. I would have guessed that mostly Craig had bigger fish to fry.....oh no...did I just say that?
85

#1GGTTH,

"Yes your right Levein seen the writing on the wall before any of us"

Half of you still havent seen it!! it's in BIG letters and it reads ..."EDINBURGH'S LAUGHING STOCK"...correction...."SCOTLAND'S LAUGHING STOCK"

I believe you that Vlad wont interfere with team selections really I do!!

Cant disagree there Chas, unorthodox I think would be the word to use. But he seems to get in the way of most shots, even it is very un-Yashin like.
87

#1GGTTH,

Did Levein sign a confidentially thingy when he left?
88

Do not be forget the many excellent Lithuanian international players that make up the majority of Hearts team.

Hearts would be bottom six side if not for good Lithuanians.

Tuppence worth

Rather have Levein back personally.

Let Kingston go, in fact let anyone go who wants to. A new man will build his own team, who will hopefully want to play for him and the club.

Haha awwww Huggsy Wuggsy dont cry. To be honest, I find the Hearts threads have much more comical value.

To quote from some numpty at #40

I also hear story that young player Driver has injury. Does this mean he will be another sale in the summer like Kingston?

wonder how many detractors will be taking the EN survey?

Labas, Denis.

Did you see the

FBK Kauno team was: Estebanas Dreeris, Darius Sanajevas, Giedrius Klevinskas, Paulius Vaikasas, Mohamedas Arouri, Vytautas Birškys, Gintas Podelis, Nerijus Valskis, Tomas Miklinevicius, Ilgizas Fatachovas, Eimantas Marozas.

A famous 1-0 victory against crappage Metalurgs Liepaja.

Some could be players for HoM next season!! Mohamedas looks like good prospect.

Yes, Mohamedas was excellent player in highlights film. It is sad if we lose more good player to Edinburgh.

But a question for Hearts fans. Will the new stadium have prayer room for Mohamedas? It is important to have such things today with EU and human rights laws. They are even apply to people from Belarus!

I was reading some history about HoM and I understand that racism is an issue.

I read that they throw bananas at coloured gentleman who used to play for Rangers. Maybe they are also racist towards Muslim players.

It shame. It only take a minority to give club bad name!
