JOHN Hughes last night made his first signing as Hibernian manager by clinching a deal for midfielder Patrick Cregg, but faces a fight to hold on to Steven Fletcher after confirming Burnley have made an enquiry about the £3.5million-rated Scotland striker.
Former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Cregg was a free agent after leaving Falkirk, and he will be unveiled at a press conference next week.

Hughes said: "Patrick loves getting on the ball and has loads of energy, he's just the sort of player I want at the club. He has his best years in front of him and will thrive on the big stage at Easter Road."

Cregg, 23, who also made three substitute appearances for Arsenal in the League Cup as a youngster, added: "I loved working with the gaffer at Falkirk, so to be joining him at a club the size of Hibernian is a great opportunity for me. I'm very excited about pre-season and can't wait to start work at the training centre this week with the rest of the boys."

Hughes also confirmed that Burnley manager Owen Coyle had called him about Fletcher and the Hibs manager will hold talks with club chiefs regarding the player's future after returning from holiday yesterday.

"Owen called to give me the heads up that there's an interest there," said Hughes. "He asked me about Fletch and I told him he can compete, he's good in the air, quick and when he gets the ball on that left foot he always hits the target. I'll be meeting the chairman and chief executive to discuss a range of matters."

Fletcher, 22, has expressed an interest in joining forces with former manager Tony Mowbray at Celtic, and looks increasingly likely to be heading for the exit this summer.

Who have Rangers secured?

At least Celtic are speaking to players.

Representatives from Celtic have flown to Paris to have signing talks with Jean-Antoine Fortune. It's a pity they didn't buy a copy of the Scotsman at the weekend, then they would know that Fortune had already decided to sign for Hull City.

Or could it be that the Scotsman had jumped the gun and got it wrong? Surely not.

Can't unimaginative journalists dream up a more suitable epithet for players and managers joining a new club? That they are invariably "unveiled" on arrival suggests they arrive wearing full burqas or suchlike. ("Right guys, let's strip this one and see what we've got ...")

Your probably right they should have bought the weekend Scotsman before flying to France.

ps. The Gers dont have a need to sign any players at this time, the tic do. VoH, Hartley, Naka out the door for nothing and McMnaus and Brown injured for the upcoming qualifiers, thats 5 of your first 11 regulars from last season.

#3 Jamtart, I also find it difficult to get excited about young Cregg, but he's quite quick and works hard so probably a good addition to the squad. You have to remember that we have a decent manager in charge now, so you might have some tough days ahead. Best keep your powder dry until you see how it's going. :-) Have a good day.

True you have a potentially good manager there he still has to prove himself cause he was not too flash at Falkirk last season.Still here's hoping we need two strong teams in Edinburgh.

ExPat Stanton,

A player from the 10th best club in Scotland...now let me see the SPL is pretty much dross so a player from the 10th best club....well you work it out Pat.

13

Shantaram,

30/06/2009 04:13:03
On Sunday my wife and I and another couple were in Brisbane and we stopped at a riverside restaurant for lunch. I was wearing a Celtic T-shirt. In the lounge, I met a middle-aged man and his son, who was about 17/18. The son was wearing a Hearts top. I said, "Hey, come on the Jambos" and gave them the thumbs up. The teenager smiled and his old man just looked at me.

While we were sitting having a pre-lunch drink, in the open air, the Jambos went past in a car with the man and his son in the back. I gave a friendly wave. The man gave me a v-sign and shouted, "Get it up ye ya F----n b-----d."

You can take the bigot out of Gorgie . . .

As for your unfortunate experience with the old Jambo. I'm afraid all clubs have these clowns attached to them, you can only feel sorry for their children. They certainly make an excellent case for contraception.

But this guy on Sunday - there is simply no hope for someone like that.
20

Have you mentioned this to anyone else?
21

Shantaram,

30/06/2009 05:08:58
Daillyman - Panic over. The transfer window closes on 31st August. As for the CL qualifier, Celtic have 3 weeks to sign players in time for that one.

Or ar you saying Celtic FC is not allowed to sign anyone between now and the end of July.

You're confusing me now.

Is it a new SFA directive? We all know what Gordon Smith is like. I wouldn't put it past him.

Sounds like they where not there for long, maybe they where there to rake the bucket, or something more sinister like stealing handbags or just "casing the joint out" with the intension of returning later to rob the place.

Or they may have seen the celtic top and thought you would have done all the above already so there was no point in staying ;>)

I have not seen much of Cregg, but if he is fast and good with the ball at his feet then he's bound to be at least 90% better than Keenan and 80% better than O'Brien!

You gotta feel sorry for Stephen Fletcher. Mowbray takes over at Celtic and Fletcher runs to the press and begs Tony to take him to Celtic. Two weeks in the job and Mowbray has not gone near Hibs, and what's more, Mark Venus tells the media they're not interested in Fletcher.

So there he is, stuck at Easter Road, where he obviously doesn't want to be.

jamtart - My Aussie wife, who spent a few years in Scotland with me and knows a bit about the whole scene, reckoned the older guy was indeed probably on holiday. The young guy with the Hearts shirt was fine and he was really chuffed when I spoke to him in a friendly way.

As you say, there are numpties in every camp.

I remember being on a big European tour round about 96/97 and during a few days in Prague, went to watch Slavia v Freiburg in the UEFA Cup. Sitting a few rows in front of me was a guy in a Hearts shirt. I spoke to him at half-time. He was a Czech national and had a big thing about the Jambos after a game against them a couple of years previously. He told me Hearts were very big among the Slavia support.

We had a good few beers in the second-half. You could go to the bar and bring the beers back to the seats and it was about 50p a pint. We were both pretty well flying by time up. Just as well. It ended 0-0.

The signing of top players is proof, if it was needed, of the Hibees stature at the top table. Arsenal haven't been the same since Cregg left them! Hibs' high profile means that selling surplus players like Fletch for megabucks to Burnley or whoever is inevitable. Please not the OF though. They're already driven by ex-Hibbies.
