HIBERNIAN manager John Hughes has told his players they must deal with being seen as an SPL scalp if they are to continue challenging the Old Firm at the top of the league.
The Easter Road side travel to face St Mirren after the current international break as they enter the second round of fixtures and Hughes insists he would be delighted if they could repeat their 21-point haul from the first quarter.

However, he warned: "Because we are riding so high now I think we are becoming a scalp. We have to be prepared for that and have to be patient in games."

With eight players away on international duty this week, Hughes will face an anxious wait to find out how his squad will be affected on their return.

Scotland's Derek Riordan has a foot injury, Liam Miller has already been sent home by the Republic of Ireland with a calf strain, but the biggest worry is Ivory Coast player Sol Bamba.

"Big Souleymane is a bit of a concern. His knee injury has been bothering him for a while now," said Hughes.

"I wouldn't like to think the international team is going to get everything off him and we have to pick up the pieces in terms of the injury front. I need him as well."

It's judgement day.....what will the punishment be?

A fine?....how much could they afford?

Ban away supporters?....that's not a punishment!

Close the doors for the next match?.....that could put them out of business!

Dock them points?........They've only got 2!

A fine and docked points it is then...

Then it's all eyes on Seville...and God help rangers should there be any trouble there!

Hibs have always been a scalp. Just like St Mirren, Kilmarnock etc. Like them, they have always been a fairly easy one and they still are.

Will be good to judge St M however when they play the caqbbages to see if they will offer ant threat in the semis.

In my dispassionate view, if they score lesws than 4 they will be nothing to worry about.

Breaking news- Rangers dismissed of all charges. Just three charges recorded on video, but demeed to be regular and in formation.

The only official comment from UEFA officials was that the some of the fans were not wearing upper clothing.

What?

It was above 16 degrees and no suppliers of the usual stuff near by.

Old Firm fans rampage around the continent spewing bigoted bile and someone on here resents the aforementioned petty nickname.

Up in front of the UEFA beaks for half a dozen drunks using plastic flip-up seats as frisbees. In the UEFA rulebook, section 5 rule 1.690 it states:

"If half a dozen fans use plastic bucket seats as frisbees, the penalty will be that Bovril will not be served during the half-time interval of a domestic league game."

#100 - nope, they are partially sold as a package. For the Seville game, they were pushing the "tickets on sale right up to kick off".

What we don't know, is how many were sold in the package and how many were bought as single entities.

Probably in the region of 25k package sold and 15k bought singularly.

Its in Rangers interests now to have sold fewer of the packages. If its a closed doors gig for the Stuttgart game, thats a lot of money to pay back

Gordon (Guest speaker at the RST AGM) Smith failed to secure sponsorship, so that 1m went into the benefit of the game.

Even the name "The Home Coming Cup" was to celebrate 250 years of Robert Burns.

Personally, as this revenue will have saved many a Scottish Club from going out of business, I would have named it in honour of the benefactor.

The "Haughey Ar La" cup

Any team above you in the league is a scalp. Given the fact that we are only just a quarter into the season, the thought a victory against us would be newsworthy in itself is nonsense. The only truth that would qualify the statement that Hughes has made would be the fallout from the game against Hamilton when they did us 2-0. Post match, the comments were all about how bad we were and not much shine given to the Accies players who were more than worthy winners on the day. That tends to happen when teams take a " scalp".

Rangers Chairman has wisely reminded us all that in the last financial year Rangers:

Regained the Scottish Premier League Championship

Won the Homecoming Scottish Cup

Secured participation in the UEFA Champions League

Thats not bad going.

Celtic achieved none of the above.

Celtic can crow about balance sheets all they like

Once Rangers finances are sorted out, where will that leave Celtic?

I feel that the finacial prudence mentality at Parkhead is beginning to show in the form of gaps on the terraces. Once that happens it is very hard to steer the ship. Most people have to work hard for their few pounds and it is understandable that everyone wants value for their money, thus the gaps in the crowd. Its a bad idea to have a politician at the helm of a football club.

Hi folks, not easy to find an open thread today.

Anyhoo, Not shocked at all at the amount of Rangers' debt. The CL money isnt included and Rangers have also dropped the wage bill dramatically so the Gers should be looking to chop at least £10m off that by this time next year.

Derek Johnstone claims he is "80 percent" certain that Dave King will take over the club. I doubt he'd say something like that if he didnt know something that we dont. My concern in regards to that is that Dave King is only worth £250m. Once he's bought the club, how much more of his wealth would he want to invest? He's going ot be down to about £190m-200m with a club that only avoids increasing debt by making the CL group stage.

Brave decision but one that i think he'll regret in the long run.

Thought that I'd make an appearance to share this with my Hoops brethren.

The old fox Wally flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play football. He is suitably impressed and arranges for him to join the squad at Murray park..
Two weeks later rearangers are 4-0 down at Parkhead with only 20 minutes left. Wally gives the young Iraqi striker the nod and on he goes. The lad is a sensation, scores 5 goals and wins the game for rearangers.
The fans are delighted, the players, Wally and Sally are delighted and the media love their new star. When the player comes off the pitch, he phones his Mum to tell her about his first day in Scottish football.
'Hello Mum, guess what?' he says (in an Iraqi accent). 'I played for 20 minutes today. We were 4-0 down but I scored 5 and we won. Everybody loves me, the fans, the media - they all love me.
'Wonderful,' says his Mum, 'Let me tell you about my day. Your father got shot in the street and robbed, your sister and I were ambushed, gang raped and beaten and your brother has joined a gang of looters, and all while you were having such great time.'
The young lad is very upset, 'What can I say Mum, but I'm so sorry.'
'Sorry?!!! Sorry?!!!' says his Mum, 'It's your bloody fault we moved to Goven in the first place!'

Remember folks it's only a joke!!!!!!!!

My opinion is Rangers cant spend until they pay down the debt. The CL money should go straight to the banks, the wage bill savings this season should also help the numbers at the end of this fiscal year.

New ownership is needed but how that will be done we can only speculate. Time for the SPL to implement a salary cap based on a % of revenue generated by each club. I have heard that caps go against European law, but why should football be any different than private business, most are not allowed major over drafts that football clubs are given.

If CFC had a man in charge that could spot good talent and sign them I would be worried. At WBA BTM spent and got his team relegated, he has signed Fortune, not impressed with him as are most CFC fans if honest. Fox looks like Naylor did his first season with the Celtic, time will tell if Fox is really any better than the previous man in the position.

The tic do have a large squad to pick from, but the quality on show is nothing to strike fear in any SPL side, just ask Falkirk.

I see UEFA wimped out yet again. If it is not this it is the shocking minor fines for racism or the Eduardo farce. UEFA have no credibility left.

Mind you I suppose after the shocking financial results announced today, I don't think the bears fans could have taken anymore bad news.

If it was a first time offence it would have been fair but with gers track record you couldn't even call it a slap on the wrists.

You post at #218 shows you think the same.

Something far wrong in this world when;

A football manager and knight of the realm speaks his mind yet gets fined £20,000

And a club that admits culpability of their "moronic" fans rioting, vandalising another ground and risking the security of the fans and stewards alike to the point of the game being threatened with abandonment - yet the club Rangers FC are fined less than an esteemed Manager who happens to voice his opinion.

Something far wrong.

Not stalking you Vinny, just thought i'd try and get a rational debate on the go.

I said from the start that it would be a fine so i wasnt surprised but i will admit that i thought the amount would have been higher.

not much higher, though, but still.

Here's the facts:

2007- Two match ban and £5000 fine

2008- Two match ban and £10000 fine

2009- Two match ban and £20000 fine

I would say frequency has a lot to do with it, wouldnt you?

The news today re; the EPL, would have hurt Rangers far more than any Uefa fine.

The EPL have said NO and Murray must now wonder just how he can sell the white elephant that is Rangers FC.

Just who is going to invest in a club and fork out £30m plus before they even start - just to clear the debt. Then there is Murry wanting some millions (some say 30m others 50m) for his stake in RFC. Then there is the money for new players/management - let's say 40m.

That's 100m plus cash injection and for what? To win the SPL? A league that even the two main clubs consider a joke, so much so that they are desperate to leave.

It will take a complete fool to takeover Rangers for £100m. And there are not too many (if any) complete fools running around with £100m in their hip pocket.

The doomsday scenario is still looming for Rangers.

Tim, i think the people at Rangers always knew that England would be long shot. Thats why Bain keeps going on about an Atlantic League.

Personally, im not in favour of that because as ive said before, if the big teams arent in it then its like being stuck in a permanent UEFA Cup.
261

A man called Lazarus ,

It has nothing to do with it.

I am comparing two stand alone crimes and not histories of previous crimes.

Crime #1 - a man offers an opinion he gets fined £20k.

Crime #2 - a club's fans run riot, vandalise a stadium, threaten and assault stewards, sing sectarian songs and throw missiles - the club gets fined £18k.

There is something far far wrong with this world.

The Atlantic league is a non starter too.

If Celtic can't get full houses v Hamburg and Rapid then forget playing them on a weekly basis.

Rangers also have had poor turnout for their CL games -granted they haven't been in a glamorous group.

Fans want to see CFC and RFC play the best - that's England's top four, Spains top 2, Italy's top three, Germany's top one,

There you go a 12 team superleague...play each other four times and you have 44 great games a season.

Size and stature of the clubs, that's why.

Celtic had one of their lowest attendances at a European game for some 8 years v Rapid Vienna and it was still the largest in the Europa League that night.

How many other clubs take over 100,000 fans to a Uefa Cup Final?

The global fan base is massive, that drives the tv money and interest level.

Throwing up the "oh they are in a wee league" just illustrates your naivity of both clubs within the global market place.

#273

Tim, the OF wouldnt be invited into that 12 team superleague. If it happens i'll tip my hat to you but its never in a million years going to happen.
274

England don't need us. Face the facts
275

A man called Lazarus ,

272

It may be that they offer a two tier Champions League with 16 teams in each that's 30 European Matches per season - with the top four in each tier two playing the quarter finals knock out, semis knock out and final. So the champs of europe would play 35 European matches per season. They should also have to operate in their own countries leagues to be assured of reaching the CL groups. But those own country leagues should be 14 team leagues - 26 games per season.

Scrap the league cup.

So in total with say national cup tourneys, a team would play around 65-70 games.

Celtic and Rangers should forget England. There is nothing there for us long term.

Neither of the old firm would break into the top four for ten years. That would mean no matches v Europe's big guns like Real or Barca.

We'd also inevitably be disliked by refs, opposing fans, other clubs etc...our intensity would be too much for them.

Forget England and let's go for the bigger pie - a Euro Superleague.
279

Daillyman,

12/11/2009 21:39:57
Agree with dv the EPL does not need the OF. If both Glasgow clubs see that as the ultimate goal and place to play, then why not bite the bullit for a few seasons and apply to the English 3rd division. Win and earn promotion through the divisions to the EPL.
280

A man called Lazarus ,

12/11/2009 21:41:04
279

How is it too much - It's less than some clubs currently play?

Might miss out on the quarter stages and just focus on the top two in each tier playing semis and then a final.

That would take two games off a potential 64

A man called Lazarus ,

The english would take a dislike to us. We should forget them.

You've changed your tune. lol

You were all for a move to England a short while back.

A Euro Superleague wouldnt happen. Why would the likes of Man Utd, Barca, AC Milan want to change their current format? Its not going to happen.

In European terms, the best we can hope for is a Euro Almost Superleague with teams like Porto, Ajax, Olympiakos etc.
283

Why will it happen because Man U Fans are fed up watching games v

There's 10 very boring unglamorous teams that Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and Villa would probably never want to waste time with again.

No I was saying Celtic need to leave Scotland. England was an option. Atlantic League was an option. Long term both are not likely or that attractive.

A Champions Superleague is both likely (no fifa or eufa barriers) and is more, much more attractive.

Let's be honest, how many Celtic fans are likely to
get excited about playing Wigan, Pompy and Fulham etc..

Would they?

Irony is Celtic have a very good record v English clubs, including wins v

Leeds
Man U
Liverpool
Blackburn
Spurs

Only English side to really beat us was Arsenal and they were very jammy to do so ( yes they were better overall but did have luck on their side in both games)

We did lose narrowly to Forest in the 80s but it was very close over both games.
