Published Date: 01 August 2008
HIBERNIAN manager Mixu Paatelainen is preparing a clear-out at Easter Road just eight days before the start of the new season.
The Finn has lost patience with up to nine members of his first team squad after a troubled pre-season campaign. The latest setback came in the shape of an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Clyde on Wednesday night. The result precipitated an extraordin
ary public outburst from Paatelainen yesterday.

"There are eight or nine players I believe are not good enough, simple as that," he said. "I have spoken to each of them and told them it would be better if they were to seek a position elsewhere."

He did not name names but striker Clayton Donaldson, who signed a three-year contract under then manager John Collins last summer, has already been told he is available for transfer. Thierry Gatheussi and Brian Kerr, two other players brought in by Collins, have also been under-used in Hibs' matches this summer, and are clearly not central to Paatelainen's plans.

Hibs have now gone nine games without a goal, a run stretching back to the fourth last game of last season. Elimination from the InterToto Cup by IF Elfsborg was forgivable, as was an admittedly heavy defeat against Barcelona at Murrayfield last Thursday night. But successive losses at Cowdenbeath and Clyde this week have provoked a serious level of dismay among Hibs fans. Hibs have two further friendlies – against Premier League sides Middlesbrough and Wigan – before they kick-off their SPL campaign at Kilmarnock next weekend, but Paatelainen has already seen enough. He has told "eight or nine" players that they will not be considered for first-team action as he seeks to trim down his squad. It currently stands at over 30 players and Paatelainen wishes to bring it down to nearer 20, although he does intend to bring in one new face before the season begins. The Easter Road board have already given him the green light to sign the striker Hibs desperately require.

Paatelainen has already added midfielder Joe Keenan as well as defenders Steven Thicot and David Van Zanten to the squad this summer. But he is as keen to weed out those he has decided are not of the standard required for Hibs, and had already told them their futures lie elsewhere. "They will not play for this football club and (having them here] does not help anyone because we have too many players," he said.

He acknowledged that some still have considerable time to run on their contracts. However, he stressed the onus was on them to save their own careers. He stressed that simply running down their contracts should not be an option. "If they want to sit it out for a year or two, their careers may be finished, so those players should look to themselves because they will not play here," he said.

Paatelainenalso insisted he saw signs of improvement in the opening stages of Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to First Division Clyde."The way we passed the ball was good," he said. "I thought it was starting to come and I am sure it will come."

Good on Mixu - there are a couple of players not mentioned I would like to see in that 9 but I am sure he knows who they are.

Under performing players on long contracts who are happy to sit on their backside should not be able to push a manager out the door.

Some Hibs fans give Rod P a hard time for not supporting the manager but I cannot believe Mixu could make a statement like that without the backing of the board. I think the Hibs board have shown very good business sense over the last few years so let's all stick behind them.

If not,why not come and support Spartans?

Der Kaiser,

Although pre-season games count for nothing, it still must be worrying for Hibs fans that Mixu appears only now to have identified the deadwood at Hibs. If Hibs run out 3-0 winners to Killie in the first game of the season then the memory of these performances will be "lost in time like tears in rain".

As a Jambo I'm entitled to gloat a bit though.

Cammy,

So first we're not fit enough yet, then we're playing a quality side (true). Then we're not concerned about not scoring goals, and now we've almost a full team of rubbish players.

Surely we should be holding on to some good excuses for when the season starts for real.

I have to agree with Mixu though about having too many players who are simply not good enough, but I'm not sure that telling everyone will lead to a happy ship.

Only time will tell, but the pressure will only get worse for Mixu if things don't improve fast. He also has to start taking some responsibility for the football being played just now.

WJR,

#3 Fair comment DK but I am prepared to give Mixu the benefit of the doubt - i.e. he was giving the underperforming guys a fair crack of the whip. He'll have full, fully funded, contingency plans.

Did I really just say that?
6

Cammy,

#4 Der Kaiser you are indeed allowed a little gloat, and as a Hibby I'm more than happy to give you and your fellow fans that after the time you've all had.

Especially as your post was both accurate and poetic.

However, the season is fast approaching and so your time for gloating is becoming very limited, so please enjoy while you can :-).

My best regards

#5 It would be silly of Hibs fans to be calling for Mixu's head before the season start so it's right to give him a good few months into the season before decisions can be made as to whether he is taking the club forward or backward. Nobody remembers a pre-season

#6
New season is indeed close, but at least we signed all those good players and got rid of all those bad players.....or was that the other way around?
8

WJR,

#7 DK, correct no-one remembers pre-season unless you're very young. When Barca went 2-0 up after 10mins Billy (Arsenal fan and on annual hols to Edin) said to me - "I don't think this will be like the Bolton game last year"

But Billy is pretty sharp for a 10yr old.

CamFromOz,

#9 - You really are delusional. What's going wrong for Hearts at the moment? Cutting debt, planning new stand, new coach making a difference, not getting battered by 3rd division teams... We're on the up n up mate. You're the ones looking like wooden spoon favourites this season.

Would like to know who these nine are. I hope Benji isn't amongst them.

I'd guess...

McCann
Kerr (nap)
Donaldson (nap)
Lynch
Chisholm
Campbell
Gathuessi (nap)
Zibi (nap)
Jones (oh dear!)
12

Silence of the Yams,

He had a good first year, but last year he was a liability. Plus he was one of the mutineers, no captain in my book. I can't think of anyone else Mixu would want out, if it's nine, Jones must be one of them.
13

Rancho Relaxo,

I don't want to heap any more misery on the Hibs fans, but after having the dubious pleasure of watching Joe Keenan playing for Melbourne Victory last season, I wouldn't be getting my hopes up on what he can contribute. He is an overlapping full back who has little pace, mediocre in the tackle and an inability to cross. It's a sad indicator if Hibs are strengthening their team with players who were clearly out of the depth in the Australian A-League.
14

Silence of the Yams,

01/08/2008 02:15:46
He wasn't injured, just played like he was. If he'd repeated his 06/07 form last year he'd now be hot property, but as it is he looks like a League 2 defender. It could be Makalamity is Mixu's ninth "pick", but I doubt it.
15

Silence of the Yams,

19. Mixu is on record as calling Keenan "a very very good player" That's two very's in the one sentence! How Mixu arrived at this verdict is anyones guess.

i agree with you on the Joe Keenan fact that he just did not cut it in the A-League. Maybe Hibs could look to Des Brebner who is currently on the comeback for Victory. Mixu may be weeding out the deadwood but he is just bringing more in.

Without tryin to pick a fight with any jambos, i think its still too early to say that hearts are certainly on the up. hibs are in a pretty bad state but all thats happened at tynecastle has been more positive talk, how many quality players have been signed. im not sayin that i thinks hibs will defintely have a better season than hearts, again, things are not good down ER but if 10 games into the season hearts are sitting 2nd or 3rd & were languishing down near the bottom then i would understand all the gloating but right now, it remains to be seen how things will pan out once the season begins
19

McStumpy,

I think both our teams will struggle again - from pre-season (and I agree it's dangerous to read too much at this stage) Hearts have a real striking problem, and Hibs appear to be generally poor. 0-0 for the first Edinburgh derby looks a good bet right now.

Why sack the monkeys when it's the organ grinder to blame? C'mon Mixu, give your organ another crank and play another tune. We're on the way up (but from a vey low point) while Hibs are on the skids and sliding fast.
22

Who's it gonna be? ,

01/08/2008 08:49:18
Hibs are rubbish just now- no doubt. I am hoping that this season will see O-Brian show some of the talent we were promised. I would also like to see a change of attitude in Benji- we all know he is a good player when he tries. I want Stevenson to show some of the form he showed during the cup run in 06-07. I am surprised that Gray was allowed to be put on loan for another season after his performances against Rangers etc. He seems to know where the net is and that is important for us since none of the current midfield do.
Yantorno and Zemmama look like our only playmakers with a bit of skill but there is not much chance of them being played together although they will be good competition for each other. However they are still too lightweight and short especially if Mixu insists on the thump up the park as is Shiels.
I think there is a decent team in amongst this squad. Nish could do a job but he is obviously not going to be a 20 goal a season man.
Donaldson, Kerr, Zibi, Gathusei must be the favorites to go. With the extra cover in defense now, Jones may not be assured of a game and certainly not the captaincy. Ian Murray would be the likely candidate and why not?
Jury is out on Morais.
Maka and Mcneil have to cut down on unforced errors- they are both ok keepers and I would be surprised if they were released.

My starting lineup would be:

Makalamby
Van Zanten
Murray
Thicot
Hogg
O-Brian
Zemamma
Keenan (?)
Shiels
Benji
Fletcher

Option to take off Shiels for Jones and push up Thicot.
Cant see a starting place for Canning or Nish.

Looking at it again, yip, we'll struggle.

Just hirry up and get on with it then Mixu... If they cant find other clubs then they should be paid off and horsed mout the door....

ohhh hang on, that would cost a few quid to do that so we'll just keep paying their wages until their contracts expire which will end up costing us the same anyway....

Whilst your clearing out the playing squad however Mixu can you try and remove the board as well? Maybe that way a replacement will give you (or another manager) some money to actually spend on players, unlike biscuit tin Rod who wouldnt give a manager a whiff of his farts never mind a transfer kitty...

Can we have a statement from the board on where the club is going this season yet Rod? Thought not.... Your silence says it all....

SACK THE BOARD!!!

Everyone seems to be forgetting that these 8 or 9 players were not even in the squad that's being playing so badly. I don't believe that, player for player, we are any worse than the rest of the SPL. We should certainly be better than Raith, Cowdenbeath and Clyde.
Fair enough, he has to unload a few to bring in one new player but he states he only wants a squad of 20. Unfortunately Mixu has to take responsibility for tactics and motivation and not blame players who weren't even playing!

#34 And if Hibs ever get off to a bad start to a season then their future is very bleak indeed as we all know what'll happen around Christmas, don't we?

Mixu only wants a squad of 20 eh? Take away 2 goalies (so called) and that leaves him 18. A few injuries, suspensions (all those red cards), loss of form and he could really struggle. Know our squad's over large but there must be a happy medium.

I never wanted Mixu as manager in the first, and was probably the first to call for his head last season; a call born out almost immediatly by a glaringly evident lack of...well...everything, actually.
No tactical awareness..no motivational skills whatsoever...no ability to recognise talent..no discipline..and all he has done since day one is make ludicrous excuses for each and every up-and-coming defeat.
There's obviousy something more fundamentally wrong at ER, but that's another issue. My point here is that Mixu is most certainly not the man to fix our on-the-pitch issues. Never was.
If he's on about players sitting out their contracts whilst not producing he should perhaps take a more inward and honest look a his own position.
He should go NOW..avoiding further damage.
Oh..and he take Rob Jones with him...
31

Who?,

You have to wonder how with so many journo's around and many more graduating from university Alan Pattullo actaully has a job?

His articles actually contain no information that the average person in the street didn't already know. He is one of these guys who will copy and paste and article from world soccer magazine, bbc website, the sun or any other publication, he will fail to check its authenticity or accuracy and publish it as his own work.

But don't worry people, he will be walking up and down rose st or princess st today in the very vain hope somebody will recognise him.

...he's a bit of a sad act!

Right statement but two or maybe three months late. Bit of brinkmanship from MP. Openly told the fans and the board that the players are not good enough. So what happens now? If the players stay, then Mixu can't. But how can the board not act now. Utter shambles.

Great fun trying to come up with the 9 names over a cuppa. Why only 9 I wonder? #19 must be pretty near the mark tho', but surely Morais must go and not Jones.
No end product, just flatters to deceive and Chisolm is another certainty - one paced going forward or back. And Benji can go too, since he spends much of the game on his backside with his hands in the air claiming free kicks. Funny how we punters can spot a muppet much quicker than the professionals !
34

brownlie,

01/08/2008 10:31:18
Out of the thirty players surely Mixu could have played more than two subs against Clyde when half the team were not performing.

Why did he play Ian Murray at centre back when he is already banned for three games at the start of the season and he has "reserve" centre backs available.

Why keep Nish on when he was obviously struggling and as slow as a cart-horse. Thicot must be wondering what he has let himself in for when he is paired up with Rankin who, apart from a few tackles, appeared to be frightened of the ball.

Alan O'Brian, who is often criticised, sent in good crosses and tracked back well. Yantorno seems to be a good player and I don't agree with the poster who was criticing Morais - at least he was willing to fight and made a bit of a difference when he came on.
35

Who's it gonna be? ,

Interesting that a few think Macann is a waste of space now. Could it be that him and Stevenson were propped up by Broon/Thomson/Murphy as they could actually score the goals to win games and their performances were overlooked?
Murphy was worth 2 Boozys as far as I am concerned and he was our biggest loss from the last couple of years and Riorden before that. Unless fletcher is contending for top scorer this season we will struggle badly with this midfield and suspect defence.

The statement by Paatelainen that 8 or 9 players are to be 'encouraged' to leave is madness. Without naming them this has just made the morale of the squad even lower and probably also reduced any value some of them might have had in the transfer market.

Today, Andy McInnes in the Express has picked up on fans speculation and named Kerr, O'Brien, Benjelloun, Donaldson, Malkowski, Gatheussi and Zemmama as being 'up for sale' and states that their career will be finished if they stay. If these names were all in the 8 or 9 I would have to say that this proves MP cannot spot good players or indeed, more accurately, does not know how to use them. a glaring example is Zemmama who is a superb player and while he is out injured is badly missed as he can be inspirational. How could Hibs continue to use inadequate players like Rankin and dispose of Zemmama makes this piece of journo nonsense laughable. Or is it??

"The Fritz-Walter-Stadion has been upgraded in preparation for the World Cup, but unlike the other 11 venues it has retained some of its character.
Capacity for the tournament is 43,000 in a stadium that has grown upon existing, steeply-banked stands over time since first opening in 1920."

But that's a whole lot of cuckoos in the nest now and the dressing room at their brand new all paid for training cowsheds must be a real fun place to be these days. Looks like they don't have break clauses in their contracts then - bad business by Petrie.

This has got to be a joke. How can you expect the players just move on?
So that will be nine players at the dole office on monday morning saying we were no good at our last job so we were sent away.
He should be talking to the agents and paying the costs. All clubs have players they dont need or want for some reason, look at Celtic Bobbo and Graveson somewhere in around £50k a week!!(Dont tell RP he may s***e himself)
All he will be doing is making an unhappy ship into a shipwreck.
Would go and take a wage drop to suit your boss?I dont think so.

#45 - not sure either STF or RP are taking massive profits for themselves...

Rather they are running Hibs as a small business, living within it's means, paying it's debt, building this and that - whereas Falkirk, Motherwell and Dundee Utd have Chairmen who literally put their hands in their pocket to pay for new players.

Spending lots of money on a player or two, and paying them big wages often achieves nothing, but equally nor does employing a naive, inexperienced manager who can't spot a player either.

The answer is to have a more experienced manager and to give him the opportunity to sign one or two key individuals, again with experience - in our case a decent, older goalie and a decent, older midfielder over 5'7" tall.

By now I hope Petrie will have realised this - Collins and Mixu have wasted money on dross players, there's not a decent signing amongst them.
49

Dave Scott,

Broughty Ferry 01/08/2008 21:27:27
The roots go deeper than this for both us and our maroon neighbours. Just as they were mad to let Burley go we were equally stoopid to let Mowbray go. Imagine how both teams would have developed if both these managers had been allowed to stay on and mature a squad. If that had been the case Edinburgh derbies would have knocked spots off any other derby with sheer class of football from both sides.
Still, can't go living in the past ....
