Relief at Hearts as wages paid at last

Published Date: 02 December 2008
AFTER a day of silence at Tynecastle, Hearts finally confirmed last night that the playing staff have received their wages, three days late.
The club announced the payment in a brief statement at 5pm which said nothing about the reason for the delay. "As announced earlier, players' wages were processed on Friday and the money has reached their accounts this afternoon as agreed," a spokesman said.

The morning had come and gone without confirmation of payment being made, despite the process having been considered to be a formality by club officials in Edinburgh, with club captain Christophe Berra stating after Saturday's defeat of Rangers: "We have been assured the money will be there on Monday morning."

Calls to Hearts went unanswered for most of the day yesterday, with leading officials said to be in a meeting and unavailable, until a brief statement was eventually issued through the public relations department.

Although the players were said to be relaxed about the matter over the weekend, team-mates made calls to each other last night to check that they had received their wages.

When The Scotsman learned on Friday evening that, for the second time this season, Hearts had not paid their players on time, the response from the club was to say that the money was in place in the relevant account and would be disbursed on Monday. They can at least claim they were true to their word on this occasion, which was not the case in September, when the first non-payment occurred.

It is understood that money to pay the players comes weekly from Hearts' parent company, Ukio Bankas Investment Group (UBIG). Jurga Chomskyte-McGeever, UBIG's head of marketing and communications, said yesterday that the delay had not been caused by any underlying problems such as cash-flow difficulties.

"The money was processed on Friday before the Rangers game (and] it will be straight into the players' accounts today," she said before payment had been confirmed. "As far as UBIG is concerned, our people are trying to look into what happened.

"From our side, the wages have been processed. There is not a problem with cash flow to my knowledge. The funds have been allocated and processed."

She continued: "We can never say it won't happen again, but there is no reason to have any concern. It has been a one-day delay, so in our terms it is only a small problem – nothing to worry about."

Sergejus Fedotovas, a director of both Hearts and UBIG, said: "There is no situation at all, the players have all been paid."

Some Hearts fans, however, not to mention the players themselves, may well feel that there is something to worry about – at least until UBIG explain exactly why two delays have affected payments, and say what they plan to do to prevent a recurrence. George Foulkes, a former chairman of the club, said that he, along with many of his fellow Hearts supporters, felt confused by what had been going on, and suggested that was the case much of the time with Vladimir Romanov, the man who has a controlling interest in UBIG.

"It's almost the same as everything with Vladimir, and you don't know if it's one thing or the other," the Labour peer said. "It's really very confusing and complex."

TIMELINE

September 2008

Friday 19: Hearts players learn their weekly wages have not been paid.

Saturday 20: A spokesman for the Tynecastle club says that payment will be made "early next week". After Hearts beat Caley Thistle 1-0, captain Christophe Berra says the players have been told the cause of the non-payment was "a technical hitch".

Wednesday 24: Midweek, and the players have not been paid. Other staff have learned that they have not received their monthly salaries either. The club says things will be sorted out by Friday.

Friday 24: Everyone is paid. Jurga Chomskyte-McGeever of Hearts' parent company UBIG says an investigation will be held to find out what went wrong.

• November 2008

Friday 28: Players' wages go unpaid for the second time. A spokesman for the club blames a blip for the problem and says the funds are in place for payment to be made on Monday.

Saturday 29: Hearts record their fifth successive SPL win, beating Rangers 2-1.

• December 2008

Monday 1: After an anxious wait in which the club says nothing to the outside world for some hours, the announcement is made at 4.30pm that the players have been paid.

Did this really need to be the top story on the page, or did Mr Bathgate have to perform a hasty rewrite on the 'Hearts crisis' headlines?

Hearts are obviously suffering cash-flow problems. This is a likely sign that there are deeper financial problems with the club that we have yet to know about.

have it on good authority hearts will be in administration before the start of next season, unless they get a huge cash injection, which aint going to come from romanov, and thats from someone internal....

I had to reverse fees at my bank in the US because a whole bunch of Americans were writings cheques ingnoring the fact that Thanksgiving shut down the fed from wednesday through monday. This is nothing! One UK banking day, ONE! Oh calamity!

The story is more about why they don't plan ahead to avoid this nonsense. I'm sure Bathgate has better things to be doing. I hear Deke Riordan managed to successfully conjugate a verb, that's got to be worthy of a few column inches.

I'm not sure how Hertz would go into administration unless Ukio Bankas folded first of all? Ukio is on its *rse just now - like a lot of others.
I would have thought it was an ideal time for some rich jambo to buy the club off Romanov for a fire sale price?
Despite the denialists - if they miss the wages pay day its not a good look. If your company didn't make the pay day you'd be a bit worried!
As a Hibby I'd be happy to see Romanov gone from the Scottish Club scene - it might be a silver lining for the Hertz after all?

How refreshing to read the following in the Herald after the Scotman's negative coverage of anything Hearts today.
""It was only last season we were talking about how well our teams were doing in Europe and, while we should not be looking back the way, a lot of the games that went against our teams this season were very close," said Burley. "We still have some excellent players and Hearts have made a run for third place, which is exciting.

"Everybody is talking about Hearts and rightly so because winning five games on the trot in the SPL is no mean feat. What they have shown is that they are difficult to beat. They are not giving much away and Christophe has to take a lot of the credit for that. They are capable of competing this season, no doubt about it."

When Rangers were 5-0 up against ICT at half time Barry Ferguson came on for the second half and bingo! nothing. Every time Barry has played he has held us back cos he wants everything to go through him and he is so negative. I am sick of this Rangers team. I cant believe we wasted £7.5m on Lafferty Velicka and Edu.

£26.8m spent and we have.

Centre halves at full back
Strikers out wide
Left wingers at centre back

We have no chance of winning the league this season even against a mediocre Celtic team.

An absolute shambles and the sooner Smith goes the better. and take Mccoist and Mcdowall and Barry with you.

I think that there a large number of clubs that could go under before this credit crisis is played out. Hearts and Livingston are, I think, the two that we must fear most for in Scotland. Not paying wages on time, and being the subject of numerous diligence actions shows that both clubs are in serious trouble.

But England's super duper Premiership is about to tumble. Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United have about 1 billion of debt between them. I wonder if Gordon Brown would bail out a football club?

I have lived in a post-communist eastern-bloc country and can read between the lines of the "delayed" payment of the players' wages. This is a not too subtle hint from the boss that the lads had better produce the goods on the football field. It's typical of the mentality of these eastern-bloc countries. You can expect it to happen again -- and again -- and again.

Even if Hearts went into administration they'd still be just one point behind Hibs after the 10 point penalty, so quite why Hibees wish this upon us is a bit of a mystery - smacks of desperation and small mindedness to me. It would possibly even be worse for Hibs as after administration the slate can be wiped clean, new owners will take over and we can start again... a hardcore support of more than 10,000 isn't going to just disappear so there's no question that administrators would be able to find a buyer at a knockdown price. The losers in administration would be Romanov and UBIG as they would have no way of recouping the debt in the club, seeing as the debt is owed to a bank also controlled by Romanov and UBIG. Sale of the ground won't cover it now given that property prices are tanking. I"m certainly much happier that our debt is with UKIO than HBOS!

It would make more financial sense to keep the club for now and try to turn it into a profitable (as if any football club can be profitable for long) enterprise - the key to this being the youth academy, ground redevelopment and bringing the wages under control - as Campbell Ogilvie outlined the other day.

Worst case scenario - forced administration triggered by a small creditor (unlikely IMO for the above reasons) who hasn't been paid, points deduction, maybe even relegation, new owner, clearout of players, start again with youth players and old pros, Robbo back in as manager, build the club up again. Not a bad scenario at all. Hearts were in the first division when I started following them so it's entirely possible we could rise up the league again from that position. It's not like many other teams in Scotland have our fanbase.

Isn't the main problem that HBOS got into deep doodoo and tightened up their lending (especially to a business like Hearts which is in so much debt) meaning Hearts couldn't pay the wages the usual way - through a 100,000 overdraft with HBOS that covered any international transfer problems/delays? Given that it was this that caused the problem first time around, forcing UBIG to introduce a new system at very short notice, it's hardly surprising there would be problems. And I echo the other poster - calling it 3 days late is taking the proverbial.

You are indeed a top class pantomime villain.
One problem though - rule one in festive public bating - Don't go so far overboard in your damning of something as folk can see you for what you are - a sub-standard Gerry McNee - And boy was was he lacking in wit and technique. Basically a nice try but please fish elsewhere.

About foreign money transfers - three times this year the company where I work has had large amounts of Euros transferred to them late - Twice by one day and once by three days. Each time, the clearing bank in Scotland was to blame. This bank (at present about to be taken over) denied,denied,denied........but were caught out as the funds WERE with them.
For once our lot might be telling the truth.

36 of course, at the end of lat week HBoS faced a legak challenge over their merger plans which could have really scuppered things for them. I suspect that had more to do with the wage problems than anything else.

35 "Football is enjoying winning, and not whinging" Aye, says you. Doesn't make it a fact.
Bougherra, Weir and Boyd should all have been sent off for elbows to the face of Hearts players no matter what the score was.

Football is also about getting a fair deal from referee. Referees should be more consistent. Yes Jambos won but not from a fair bite of cherry from referee It doesn't make any difference who wins, people are entitled to mention the bias performance by the referee. Why did he add 4 extra minutes, and Hearts were down to 10 men. If it was the other way round it would have been two at the most. Even if a result is in your favour it is not whingeing if you want to criticise referees.

We are now in a worldwide recession caused by banks.
Banks are failing around the world.

The online website for Ukios Bancas lists Vladmimir Romanov as the main 100% shareholder.

It also list dozens of companies that Romanov owns including Edinburgh Football Club: "Earth of Midlothian".

According to the Lithuanian News Agency, the Lithuanian economy is also being badly affected by the recession.

The sooner a White Knight steps in the better, or Hearts might well cease to exist?

at least the scotsman allows some comment on their articles..the herald has stopped this service and now their journalists can write any kack they want..today there is an article saying rangers are missing millerand he and boyd are the "star" partnership...however in the 5 league games rangers have lost points in this season boyd has played the full 90 minutes in 4 of them and came on as a sub after 66 minutes in the other ..miller has played all but 9 minutes in 4 of them and missed the hearts game..in those 5 games the "star" partnership scored 0 goals..but the herald suggests they are a great partnership...oh well thanks to kris boyd for his forward roll and shame on bbc sportsscene for not highlighting it..

I think one of the main reasons Hibs fans want Hearts to fail financially is because the team that they put on the park is not paid for by Hearts fans. Romanov is a mini-Abramovich in that he has allowed a heavily-indebted club to keep paying more than it can afford to. Hearts had already been doing that for years beforehand. Fortunately his meddling has meant that Hearts have enjoyed less success than they should have, so it hasn't been too painful for Hibbies.
If Hearts fans really think they are the "big team" they are deluding themselves. Both clubs have about the same potential, but the men in green play for a club that makes profits and is sustained by fan loyalty and good club management. The men in maroon are sustained by debts and unkept promises. If Hearts recent crowds are anything to go by, the punters have finally begun to realise that Romanov is all talk, and that they have wasted millions while failing even to reach the top 6 last year.

One thing in Romanov's favour- his financial strength did allow Hearts to hold out for top dollar for Craig Gordon- money he could then spend on high wages for very limited success.

#46 Ah the old myth of Hibs being the poor relations in Edinburgh. Are you forgetting that Hibs have their own rich benefactor - one of the richest men in Scotland no less and the 5th richest club owner behind Romanov?

Without his bailout for 16 million was it (?), who knows where Hibs would be now. The difference is that Farmer has no interest in investing in the team and taking it forward (hence the low wages and grabbing any money he can get for players) and Romanov does (hence the high wages and holding out for more money for players).

And a Scottish cup and 2nd place is hardly "limited success" in Scotland. It's more success than any other team outside the OF has achieved in one season since the 80s.

#46 What a bizzare post! I echo what #49 has said.
Hibs fans are in a strange mentality these days; so many predictions about "flats flats" & "tick tock" & administration. Compulsive and manic!!!
Well, the wages debacle is not something that sits well with me, regardless of how "common" it might be in other areas of the world. As I stated yesterday millions of businesses manage to get this right, and we are entitled to wonder where the incompetence has it's root.

have to love all the slavering hibees with tick tock and flats today.

No sentiment there about missed derbies that's for sure, as far as I was concerned.

Similar to the Gers, Hearts win a match 2-1 the tic go 7 points clear, the league according to some tic support is over in December, and then they rant on about MIM debt. Some people have short memories.

In the current format you are correct no Scottish side has won the CL.

As one who still looks upon this tournament as the European Cup, and as winners champions of Europe, give the tic credit they were the first British side to win it, albeit in the old format.

Stuart Bathgate have a word with yourself... they were paid ONE business day late. to say 'AT LAST' is a pathetically worded piece of journalism - unless you want to make it obvious you are a hobo and self confessed hearts hater ??

maybe one day before you retire you can write.... Hibs win the scottish cup 'AT LAST'

only perhaps by a biased journalist can one business day and 108 years be described in the same manner.

I think everyone is missing the point here. When this happened earlier in the year, everyone was told that there would be procedures put in place to stop this happening agin. However a few months down the line, it has happened again!

The question should be "Why has this happened again" when the Hearts community were told it wouldn't.

Whether its sinister or not, I don't think we will ever find out, but if I were nuteral, and with my name I'm sure you will probably say I'm not, I would be worried.

And I am worried; worried for the Hearts fans, quite a few of who are good friends of mine.
