Scotland 1-1 Croatia: Spirited draw gives Burley hope for 2010 campaign

Bilic says Scots should fear no-one as Miller equaliser earns impressive draw against Euro 2008 finalists

Published Date: 27 March 2008
GEORGE Burley was unable to make a winning start as Scotland manager last night but saw enough evidence during a highly competitive 1-1 draw with Croatia in a friendly international at Hampden to encourage him that qualification for the 2010 World Cup finals is a realistic goal.
Without seven players who withdrew from his original squad because of injury, Burley expressed his satisfaction with the performance of those who marked his first game in charge with a creditable result against the highly regarded Euro 2008 finalists.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the commitment of the players," said Burley. "I learned a lot about individuals and the team. We were up against a team I believe are one of the best in Europe, so we had to work hard against them, which we did."

Scotland responded well to the loss of a spectacular tenth-minute goal scored by Portsmouth midfielder Niko Kranjcar to ensure Burley's reign did not start with a defeat, Kenny Miller equalising with his 11th goal for his country.

"Croatia started brightly and you could see they have a settled team," he said. "We conceded the early goal, but we hung in there and got back into the game. We showed a lot of character, we have a very committed squad and one with a lot of passion.

"We tried to take the game to them, but it didn't work in the first ten or 15 minutes. You have to give credit to Croatia for that, because they moved us around and forced some of our attacking players back.

"We have areas of our game to improve, and there are one or two players who could come into the squad, but we saw some different faces tonight and that was good for me."

Hibs striker Steven Fletcher lasted just 45 minutes as he made his debut on his 21st birthday. He was unable to continue in the second half after suffering a chest injury but he set up Miller's goal and earned warm praise from Burley. "I thought he did well," said the manager. "He has had a good season for Hibs and deserved his call-up. I'm sure he is going to play a big part for us in the future."

Burley has two more friendly internationals, against the Czech Republic in Prague on 30 May and Northern Ireland at Hampden on 20 August, before the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign begins with a Group Nine double-header away from home against Macedonia and Iceland on 6 and 10 September.

Croatian manager Slaven Bilic hailed last night's match as perfect preparation for his team's Euro 2008 finals participation this summer and believes Scotland can go into their World Cup programme in bullish mood.

"Scotland shouldn't be afraid of anyone," said Bilic. "The Netherlands are the big team in their group, but this will be a hard place for them to come. Scotland were very unlucky not to qualify for Euro 2008 and their football is very strong now.

"It was a great test for us tonight. It was exactly what we wanted. That's why I chose Scotland, because I knew it would be a really competitive game."

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher limped out of Hampden with a potentially serious knee injury, but Scott Brown is expected to be fit to play for Celtic in Saturday's Old Firm match despite suffering a knock. His club-mates Stephen McManus and Paul Hartley completed the full match, while Gary Caldwell played for 70 minutes.

Craig Gordon reflected on Croatia's early strike from Kranjcar, which appeared to change direction in the air. The Sunderland goalkeeper put this down to the type of ball used at Hampden last night. "That's an example of what these new Diadora balls can do when they are hit like that," said Gordon. "It makes our job ever harder. It would have happened to any goalkeeper in the world with that kind of movement."

McManus led the Scotland team out for the first time and the defender was relieved not to lose his debut match as skipper. "It was a hell of a strike from the lad for their goal but it was a good time for us to score," he said. McManus also expressed his pride at being asked to wear the armband. "It hasn't really sunk in yet. I think it will take a few days," he added.

#2 dont you find your post a little biased !!??! perhaps the ex rangers players and "fans" called off x
you would have prefered craig pattersons comments on the bbc highlights when suggesting he was a bit suprised that the 4 celtic players were still on after an hour he suggested that they would be substituted soon as burley would want to keep a good relationship with gordon strachan......and.... (wait for it..)... walter smith !!!!

2 Perhaps you would have preferred the the match was covered by the B B C with their totally unbiased approach to all football matters.
Sorry I forgot the match wasn't at Ibrox. The BBC probably didn't know the match was on.

Aye, auld firm muppets letting their country down as usual.

Great start Scotland and Burley. And Scotland are stronger than what was on display last night. Can't wait for the qualification games to start. I reckon we can take top spot from Holland!

who exactly do you mean by this comment? could someone be having a swipe at Rangers and only Rangers even though Celtic pulled players out too!
8

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 27/03/2008 10:18:13
#9 i know its hard when the media equate rangers pulling out their 4 first team starters and leaving a subsititute in the pool with celtic leaving 4 first team players in the squad (who all played) and withdrawing a substititue..but on the outside people can see the bad sportsmanship that it is....but i supose when your manager walks out on the country hes started a bad habit x

Although it's hard to take much from friendlies i thought the Scots played very well against a technically very good side. Thought S.Fletcher done well and has the type of game that is ideal for international football. Miller, Hutton and Gordon also impressed. A little disappointed that Berra never got an opportunity though.

without Walter taking the job and giving Scotland some respect back in the national football circles where exactly would Scotland be?...back in 79 position as usual!

As for players walking out or pulling out i seem to recall Celtic pulling players out of the Scotland squad before the Kirin Cup in Japan..a game that actually meant something!...did i hear celtic fans complain about that.. Nope!

Anyway... dont you lot support Oirland anyway? :-d:-d
11

sonofcosmos,

#12 "..oirland" ?? is that like me saying dont you lot support "engerland" ??
as ive said before rangers took the decision to withdraw their players..you can think thats fine..and as a rangers fan you probably will..or you can think its a poor show..whuich everyone else will think..however as you mention when the celtic players were withdrawn..(no prtend injuries ..but a policy decision by the club) they were slaughtered by the media...but hey smith wasnt slaughtered for walking out on scotland so im not suprised by the party line being taken by murrays monkeys..who have as i said earlier equated 4 first team withdrawals by rangers with 1 substitute withdrawal from celtic...

John H, it wasn't so much the people who were on teh Sky coverage, if you look you will see that I am picking up on two people. Some of the things Davie Provan came away with with were jsut ridiculous and Tanner was a disgrace.

Lambert and Nick Nick were spot on tho'.

Marius Niculae scored for Romania last night. That, along with future Scotland captain Ian Black shows ICT are the best team in the Highlands. Elgin have never had an internationalist! And what about the time Elgin 'won' the Highland League then were disqualified for 'irregularities'. ICT - top of the North!

Ross County probably support Norway or something with all that Viking heritage talk. It shows ICT are more committed to Scotland than any other Highland team. Ross County - the shame of the North.

anybody who called off because they think playing for ier country is unimportant......they kshould be clambering over themselves to put thier talents up against a top 10 in the world team

But not so, as an old firm game takes prioroty, both sfa and fifa should ensure these players don't play on saturday, if they are not unfit, they most certainly are unfit to wear a Scotland jersey again

30

sonofcosmos,

#22 its not a conspiracy..its a well known fact that players are pulled from international squads...in this instence your club were the worst offenders..to say that a sfa doctor is going to say to barry ferguson..no your not injured so youll need to play is pretty stupid dont you think..or are you sticking with your implicit answer that no one has ever pulled out of a scotland squad through injury when they actually were fit enough to play.
also as ive said its murrays monkeys in the media that are more distasteful..x

But yeh were agreed. On a more positive note, you'll still be able to see the countries top talent twice a year when the big guns roll down Leith walk.
33

I didnt say no one has pulled out from International squad and wasnt injured.. i did give the example of Celtic pulling their players out when Scotland DID need them..but hey ho eh!

So, you are still sticking with your reasoning that an SFA would lie to GB and say.." ohh aye Barry is injured" when he isnt? or is GB in in this too then?

34

Jo Jo,

27/03/2008 11:49:34
So Ferguson has an ankle injury that will undoubtedly need more surgery.Dailly has a broken toe and yet the MOPE's would have us play 2 injured players just to satisfy their paranoia.
And even then out the 4 players injured it is arguable that only 1 of them would actually have played in the game...Ferguson.

Saturday evening is going to be fun watching all the MOPE's go in to meltdown with their persecution theories.Their paranoia and chip on the shoulder attitudes.

So should Barry Robson be banned from playing for Scotland then...or the Steak Pie players who pulled out of an International Tournament to play in a friendly for their club.

Yes the very same player who captained Scotland last night snubbed his country to play in a testimonial.

Davis,Papac,Naismith all played last night as did Boyd.

The MOPE's truly are a strange breed and should be pitied more than scorned i suppose.

As did Richard Hastings and Marius Niculae, who not only played but scored for his country. That settles it. The only SPL player to have scored. Therefore, ICT are the top team in an international context.

And Aberdeen are the last Scottish team to have won a European trophy, so the north is better than the south.

Good result for the lads last night. We should feel proud that Croatia chose us as rivals in their Euro '08
campaign.

Spain have played and beaten both France and Italy in their campaign... a team to be watched as well as Croatia...

For any EPL " best in the world" asswipes out there The Kid was a disappointment as usual for his country. It took David Villa from struggling Valencia to break the deadlock and score a cracker.

Jo Jo,

It is panaroia. It is also fear. On Saturday all the chickens will come home to roost. The prospect of the san giro gallacticos winning now't is becoming increasingly likely. Contemplating defeat on all fronts domestically by a "poor" Rangers side, peppered with with barely fit foreigners, Scotland "hasbeens", and the odd loan signing, is almost too much to bear for the CFC hoards. I feel no pity though, only much mirth.

When i say the doctors examined them the guess what that means.. the SFA Doctors examined them..as in they carried out an examination and the SFA doctor believed them and declared them unfit just as he would have done with the Celtic players that said they couldnt play.. is that concept soooo hard that you just dont get it!

as i say the way the media have covered this its no wonder rangers fans cant understand how cynical and shallow rangers behaviour has been seen by all football fans outside their own x

#50 was rhetorical, because we all know the answer is NO. In some cases (i.e Freguson) the answer is no and probabaly about 70% fit on Saturday.

If the answer to #51 is yes and in the case of Croatia it surely is a step up, then let me ask

Why would any player, medical offical, or manager want to risk an unfit player on an international stage?

Good result for Scotland and glad that Burley got off to a good start. Lets hope its a sign of things to come.

Really don't know what all the fuss is about regarding call off's for the Scotland game. Some new faces got a run out so it's all good.

From a Celtic perspective, we have the players to defeat Rangers on Saturday and if we do not win then we only have ourselves to blame. We have defeated teams, this season, who are considerably better than Rangers and we ourselves, possess better players than Rangers. If we match them for will to win. We will defeat them by a 2 goal margin at least.

Last night provided a run-out for some of our guys against a team that no single Rangers player would be considered for more than a job carrying the kit bag, so it's to our advantage rather than disadvantage. The boys certainly should be able to handle it.

If Walter Smith thinks his players need a rest before the Saturday then fair play to him. He's going to need everything he has to get even draw and he knows it. Besides, it was only a friendly. Strachan obviously feels that his players would benefit from the excercise. The circumstances are different for either team and either manager.

I'm looking forward to Saturday now!

#46 i believe it was 2 withdrawals from the georgia game (which was nicely brought up in an article by the scotsman this week to deflect from the current withdrawals) ..with caldwell being fit for the old firm game and hartley being unfit..the kirin cup game was a policy decision by celtic as they were oblidged to play their top team in those friendlies...no one pretended to be injured etc.
everyone knows that rangers pulled their players out of this game..my main gripe is with the medias "lacky" coverage..espcially to equate celtics 1 call off with rangers 4...x

That's what we like a refreshing bit of optimism. Based on not a lot but hey! it blows away the stench of paranoia and mopery that has been wafting about for the last few days.

Cap'n Shug...talk to your bhoys...get them up for it. They are cowering in the trenches.

I love it when the Brigadoon Bravehearts get all excited about drawing against a another wee team who didn't need to win. lol

Cracking result for the Ulstermen last night though. Now that's how football should be played.

sorry to be pedantic.. celtic withdrew 3 players from the georgia game (Caldwell, Brown & Hartley), rangers withdrew 2 (Hutton, McGregor). McCulloch was suspended

McManus, Boyd, Ferguson and Weir all featured in Georgia..

All apart from hartley were fit for the OF game... so when some suggest its swings and roundabout.. (ie rangers had 3 playing, celtic had 1 playing before that OF game) you can understand where we're coming from..

eh?

Hugh "the Roaster" Hefner seems to think im a Rangers fan mascarading as a Celtic fan, for what reason anyone would do this i don't know, but his reasoning for this seems to be that I am currently unhappy with the team and the manager.

What a fud this girl is.

To see the world through the eyes of a man so delusional that he thinks Celtic will win by a 2 goal margin on Saturday, better players (stop my sides) and top it all:

"Last night provided a run-out for some of our guys against a team that no single Rangers player would be considered for more than a job carrying the kit bag"

'Hi, this is planet earth. you do know that 4 first team choices were Rangers players..yeah?'

Ah but I see the dellusional world of Heffner (Mr. over compensating) does not concern itself with reality. So yes Celtic will win on Saturday, CFC to win the SPL, WGS for manager of the year, Labour win the next election.. the sky is green the grass is blue.

There is no such thing as a " Celt "...its a completely fictional and made up culture by bored Anglo- Oirish Protestants in the Victorian era. But you would know that..if you had a brain cell or two.

#45 And they were rightly slaughtered for CHOOSING club before country when they were NOT injured.

Minor details like the FACTS tend to blow holes in your arguments and the MOPE's in general.

Boo hoo the SFA doctor is wan o them...he's pyoor cheating the Sellick man.

So the broken toe that Dailly has is not enough for him to miss a match in which he would have been a squad player at best.

Dry yer eyes and put yer dummy tit back in yer mouth MOPE.
