GOLFER Terry Mathieson, a former Scottish Amateur Championship semi-finalist, hasn't had to wait long to get a chance to impress the Lothians selectors after moving to the Capital.
The 27-year-old, one of the top players in the North-East in recent years, has been named in the side for this weekend's curtain-raising friendly against Stirlingshire at Luffness New.

"Terry was involved in a get-together we had at Haddington ear
lier in the month and he's a pretty good addition to our pool of players," said Lothians team manager Denys Flaherty.

Beaten by eventual winner Andrew McArthur in the 2002 Scottish Amateur Championship semi-final, Mathieson recently took up a new job at King's Acre.

"I'm delighted to get my chance so soon and my aim is to try and get into the six-man team later in the season," he said.

"Playing for the Lothians will be strange to start with, especially when I was in the North-East side that lost to them in the final of the Area Team Championship a couple of years back."

Baberton's Paul Ferrier, the Scottish Boys' champion, has also been picked for Sunday's match as Flaherty and his fellow selectors assess their options for the first big test of the season – a match against Northumberland.

"We are using this weekend's match to try and give us a wider pool to pick from when it comes to the Northumberland game," admitted the team manager.
