LLOYD Saltman’s bid to return to the Open championship field got off to a purposeful start in the first round of the International Final Qualifier at the Sentosa club in Singapore yesterday.
The Craigielaw rookie, who won the silver medal for finishing 15th as an amateur in the 2005 event at St Andrews, posted a one-under 71 over the Serapong course and shares eighth place, two behind leading trio Danny Chia, Angelo Que and Englishman Yasin Ali.

Saltman, 22, looking to bounce back from missing the cut in the Asian Tour International at the weekend, made a birdie on the first hole before picking up another stroke at the 12th and, despite a bogey at 15, he still finished well in sight of the top-four place needed to secure a trip to Royal Birkdale after today’s closing round.

Saltman’s fellow Scots, Ross Bain and Simon Dunn, both saw their chances diminish. Baintoiled to a four-over 76 while Dunn slumped to a 78.
