RELENTLESS commitme
nt and hunger saw Hearts claim a point against Kilmarnock despite playing the majority of the match with ten men following Calum Elliot's dismissal.

However, the Edinburgh club have now slipped to 11th place in the SPL table due to St Mirren's victory over Hibernian at Love Street.

Elliot became the fourth Tynecastle player ordered off in as many days for two bookable offences. He walked on 36 minutes and Kilmarnock moved ahead shortly after through Paul Di Giacomo. But the hosts delivered a spirited and second-half display which brimmed with unity and, having levelled through Andrius Velicka's eighth goal of the campaign, will consider themselves unfortunate not to have secured victory.

Whilst the club's league position, like their indiscipline, remains a concern, this match provided plenty cause for encouragement. If nothing else, a draw ended the recent run of seven consecutive defeats. Jim Jefferies will be similarly contented with a draw following Kilmarnock's recent erratic form, and in truth his side's performance did nothing to damage his credentials for the vacant manager's job at Tynecastle.

Hearts replaced the suspended trio of Marius Zaliukas, Lee Wallace and Michael Stewart with Christos Karipidis, Jose Goncalves and Eggert Jonsson respectively. It was Karipidis' first outing since August following knee surgery, and Deividas Cesnauskis also appeared in the starting 11 at Tynecastle for the first time since October 2006, replacing Saulius Mikoliunas.

The hosts survived an early penalty claim when Elliot looked to handle Colin Nish's head flick. Gradually, Kilmarnock settled into a rhythm and passed the ball confidently through midfield, although whenever Hearts regained possession Jefferies ordered his players to funnel back behind the ball.

This ensured space came at a premium and had a stifling effect on wingers Cesnauskis and Audrius Ksanavicius. Patience, though, can be a virtue in football and Hearts continued to probe as the first half progressed. Ksanavicius stung the fingertips of Kilmarnock's Alan Combe on 33 minutes following bullish forward play by Velicka, and the goalkeeper then repelled shots from Cesnauskis and Robbie Neilson in quick succession.

Just as the hosts began to thrive, they again pressed the self-destruct button. Elliot lunged at Tim Clancy and earned himself a dismissal having earlier been cautioned for a late tackle on Danny Invincibile. The striker could harbour few complaints for both offences were needless and bookable. However, it must be said that referee John Underhill was guilty of frightening inconsistency throughout the first half by allowing countless Kilmarnock infringements to pass without punishment. In particular, Simon Ford's persistent fouling ought to have been addressed.

Predictably, with Hearts reduced to ten men, the visitors then moved ahead. A flowing move down the right flank concluded with Di Giacomo converting Jamie Hamill's cross, bringing the opening period to a successful conclusion for Jefferies.

Hearts regained impetus for the second half and Goncalves and Cesnauskis combined to create an opening for Velicka on 57 minutes, but Ford's sliding challenge deflected the Lithuanian's strike wide. The reward for increasing the pressure arrived six minutes later. Berra towered above his marker at the back post to redirect Cesnauskis' corner into the six-yard box, where it was forced home by the ubiquitous Velicka.

The goal lifted the decibel level considerably inside Tynecastle and, after some impish keepie-up play by substitute Saulius Mikoliunas, Velicka poked a shot wide from distance. Kilmarnock's influence on proceedings was waning and Hearts, who were by now showing admirable grit and desire, strove to capitalise on their supremacy be pressing their guests back.

There was a touchline altercation between Billy Brown and Stephen Frail in the 74th minute, with the Kilmarnock assistant having to be restrained as emotions intensified.

Combe leapt into the air to tip Ruben Palazuelos' drive for a corner and then denied substitute Christian Nade from Eggert Jonsson's deep cross.

Kilmarnock's Willie Gibson squandered a late chance on the break by scooping his shot into the Roseburn Stand, but neither they nor their hosts could be overly unhappy with a point.

Hearts (4-4-2): Banks; Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves; Cesnauskis, Jonsson, Palazuelos, Ksanavicius; Elliot, Velicka. Subs: Basso, McGowan, Nade 83 (for Velicka), Pospisil 87 (for Cesnauskis), Mikoliunas 53 (for Ksanavicius), Beniusis, Brown.

Kilmarnock (3-4-1-2): Combe; Corrigan, Ford, Clancy; Hamill, Locke, Fowler, Hay; Nish; Invincibile, Di Giacomo. Subs: Harpur, Johnston 65 (for Locke), Morgan, Gibson 82 (for Di Giacomo), Fernandez, Flannigan, Wright.

Attendance: 14,346.

Referee: John Underhill.

Not a good result for the hertz. Surely Scotland's third force (purportedly) should be winning their home games against every other team outside the old firm (purportedly).

Well, second bottom now and if results don't get better and Gretna find some form, then relegation is a distinct possibility.

Frail started Elliott again. He must have an interest os some sort in moving him on, what reason can there be for starting him week in week out and being vocal in support of him?

Frail is only one that sees it and this has been said by so many fans for months!!

We did better when he was off, says it all!

Now we are 11th so any comments abiout fighting spirit are not acceptable, we could just as easily have lost it had Gibson kept his head. Punting players forward and leaving big holes at back is not good management, it may be exciting but is naive.

2nd bottom, glad Gretna did not invest in new players when they came up!!

no.1+4 shut up and get a life...
The hobos are doing so good that there fans seem to find the time to have a go at the hertz maybe you should spend more time looking at your own affairs.
The performance was not a joke; if anything it was well thought and well handled by the players and management.
Well played hearts a sign of things to come...hopefully
If it was'nt for the red for Elliot could have been a different game...

Hard to see justification for Elliot. There is a line between enthusiasm and stupidity which he does not seem to appreciate. He should have been subbed after the first yellow.
That apart,I thought several players gave full commitment and, also, some skilful movement.I thought Alan Combe had a great game for Killie and we would have won if Nade or Pospisil had played instead of CE.

good second half performance, you could see confidence growing by the minute, unlucky in the end not to win it.

excellent support today too, crowd drove players on, Jonsson, miko and chesney all excellent in second half.

#1, what are you on about - fans get behind struggling team and you see that as a negative - ar*e.

repeat of today's effort in coming weeks and keep 11 men on the park and things will turn around quickly enough.

#25, indeed i do my friend and i have done in the past when i believed there was a cause to be fought for.

i personally believe mr romanov to be in for the long haul and accept the fact that we are going through a difficult spell at the moment. it's not the first i've seen and doubt very much it will be the last.

there is no viable alternative to vlad at the moment and i'm not unhappy with that to be honest. i believe that if we all stick together, ride out this sticky patch, maybe make a couple of decent signings in the transfer window, things will pick up nicely - maybe i'm just a hopeless romantic?

there is a time and a place for the behind the stand protests etc i agree, i just don't believe this is one of them.....

There are some deluded Hearts supporters on here tonight... I have supported Frail all the way but after tonight I have to say that I can't wait to see a new manager at Tynecastle.

In the 2 games Frail has chosen the team and been in charge of subs, we have been awful and I'm fairly sure that he has lost the backing of many in the dressing room (apart from the hopeless Calum Elliot that is).

Frail is a nice guy... but he is doing nothing to dissprove the theory that nice guys finish last!

35

CBJambo,

05/01/2008 20:12:04
We really have to hope that in January we get rid of ALL the players at Tynecastle who are not up for the fight and the new manager (Please make it Levein... PLEASE!) brings in a couple of astute game winning players... if we don't and Gretna buy a couple of players... we are on a very shoogly peg!

Killie arrived today missing several key players and far from their best after a dismal run off form and still they could have won if the laddy Gibson had kept his nerve. This is at Fortress Tynecastle as well... or what use to be... now it is a sandcastle where any team can come and bag a point... and it's the pits!
36

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

Hopefuly that will be Elliots last game for Hearts.
Very lucky that the rest of the boys pulled together and put in a very good performance second half. Could have been better but it is a good indicator that things on the pitch can be sorted out. The desire was there and we could easily have won with a bit of composure in front of goal.
Surely now the players have to realise that these officials don't need excuses to show cards and it's unbelievable how they can keep dishing out reds. Nobody wants to see 10 against 11 or worse as in Utd match as it ruins the game. A bit of common sense needed, especialy from the players but the refs aswell, no chance of the latter happening though!
All in all though better today and if the correct players are picked we will shoot back up the league in the coming weeks. Cups will take care of themselves, the league form has to be priority just now.

38

CBJambo,

05/01/2008 20:19:20
Also Frail should be thinking about leaving if only because of his blind faith in Elliot... we ALL moan about Miko and his lacklustre performances... but come on Elliot has got to be the worst player in the first team now... he has had COUNTLESS opportunities to make his mark and has failed EVERY time. Today he gets himself sent off at a time when Hearts are struggling and every man on the pitch has to stand up and be counted. Why he was on when Nade and Pospisil were available is beyond comprehension (although the latter is off ASAP and will shirk every challenge and tackle until such time).

Elliot is awful and Frail's failure to see that plus his failure to see when he needs/must make substitutes during a game (think Dundee Utd match) is a sure sign that we are no better off with him in charge than Vlad and his cronies!!

39

ED... You are a tw4t! What do you mean "how could the fans get behind the team" I`m sorry mate, if you are a jambo, then we don`t need your likes at tynie!!! I was there today, and yes, i`m fed up what`s happening but did you not see the effect getting behind the team had??...CLOWN!! Anyway, Elliot...what a complete 4rse! The club should severely fine this young idiot! If we managed to keep 11 players on the park today we would have collected all 3 points! I would also put some blame on the management team for not dragging elliot off after his first yellow! It was good to see Hearts put a fight up in the second half, and I feel we deserved 3 points. Hopefully after the spirit shown in the second half will spur us on up the league...past the hobos as they are only going one way. As for Romanov, i will never believe another thing that comes out of your trap!

CBJambo,

One last rant before I sign off. Hearts must clear the decks this January and make some astute signings... even if they are fringe players from the OF (Gow, Broadfoot, Riordan, Killen) or contract rebels from Killie and Aberdeen (Nish, Nicholson etc) in order to start to salvage our season and try to finish in the top six and even have a hope in hells chance of a uefa (doubt it tho) spot.

However these type of players (Scottish based) which I believe are the kind needed to stay in the spl will only be brought in by a Scottish/English manager. If we go foreign we will end up with more continental guff, more foreign languages, more confusion, longer time to gel.... relegation dogfight!

I'm hoping come the end of the month we'll be seeing the back off...

Karipidis
Elliot
Basso
Pospisil
Mikoliunas
Beniusis
Kanchelskis
Ivaskevicius
Makela
Kurskis
Pinilla

... but hope will always spring eternal.

TRUE 38
Elliot is absolute rubbish. But Frail seems to be obsessed with him, grow up Frail and admit you are wrong Elliot is not a great player, playing him week in week out waiting for the one decent performance so you can say " i told you so" is not going to happen.
We hoped you would be differant and favouratism would be a thing of the past, but no its still alive and kicking! perhaps after today you can see the error of your blind obsession with this player. He let you down big style he let his team mates down but much more importantly he let the fans down (again)
44

Waspy100,

#44. The real fans may not be the ones that turn up and act like performing seals, clapping garbage.

I have had a season ticket for 15 years, will just go on game by game basis next year unless things change.

What planet are you on about dark forces from the west, the OF are in a different league to us playing wise, we are 2nd bottom!!! The OF are irrelevent to us this season.

If we win the derby all will be well for too many supporters, we need ambition and to be ruthless in getting success. Frail starting Elliot again shows he has no clue and doesn't deserve support when he ignores what 95% of fans are saying.

When I heard the team - Velicka and Elliot up front, I very nearly just walked out. At least Elliot will be suspended, it is a pity that he can't be suspended permanently. The sooner a new manager is in the better, surely only Frail sees this pairing as the way forward.

I was heartened by the 2nd half fightback, some of the players showed what they are capable of.

#4. There is nothing "Purportedly" about Hearts being Scotland's 3rd biggest and 3rd most succesful club, all the FACTS say so - end of. Just to remind you, Hearts are, always have been and always will be Edinburgh's big team. How does finishing behind us in 16 of the last 20 seasons feel!

The ref was murder against us - Hay persistently dived and he should have been sent off for it, but the ref bottled it, no such trembles when it comes to a hearts player though.

Lets face it Frail is a cheeky b@stard for playing Elliot I don't care if he stays when the new manager comes in; he's probably part of the team's problems!!

My guess is that Frail didn't want his players to sit there at half-time and watch Elliot cry his little heart out, so he sent the team out early onto the pitch.

i'm drunk so soz for all spelling mistakes.

first point, if elliot ever plays for hearts again, it's a farce. he's an absolute disgrace. he single handedly stuck his muckers right in the sh** with his ludicrous display of non existent discipline.

message to frail or whoever picks the team, do dot pick this effing lunatic, he's a total liability.

second point, i have never, ever been as proud of my football club and the fans as i am right now. that was a magnificent effort to get back in the game from the 10 that remained, they were stuck in the total sh** by a complete erse but still managed to dredge up enough will in order to get the point. there is no doubt they should have won.

the attitude and spirit of the fans was also unbelievable. like i said, i am so, so proud of the fans that continually backed the team, even when we were still 1-0 down.

if we get that effort from fans and team, we will do just fine.

Referee 2 - Poor.
The no foul at blatent Miko trip within a few yards of referee was shocking.
Reasonable performance in first half with Elliot stupid.
Second half fans were terrific. For a club in dissaray with terrible form and 1-0 down Hearts FC are lucky to have this support.
Karapidas surprised me as I don't rate him.
Miko great 40 minutes
Chesny - class. Lasted a good 80 minutes.
Jonnson and Pale both worked tirelessly and should stay as first choice midfield pairing - No room for Stewart.
Bednar for Elliot and we would have a chance of progress.

Surprised we didn't get humped after going down to ten men when numpty got sent off, then again, Killie are not the team they were last season either!

At least Elliot will be unavailable for selection next week!

67. Hello Mixed-up, ok we are a poor side at the moment but have a look at your own lot, where is the free-flowing football side going now? I dearly hope Craig gets to stay, oh, and how many points did your side get yesterday? we got one, not much ok, but one more than you.

Rumour in some of the Sundays are suggesting KEvin Keegan is being strngly linked with the Hearts job along with former front runner Nevio Scala, although the later has little knowledge of the British game.

Keegan is residing through on the West coast of Scotland at present. However, whether he would welcome a return to football, especially if he has any understanding of Romanovs dictatorship, is questionable?

Has anyone else heard any rumours about the new manager? Levein and Jeffries are the front runners so far.

Elliot has to be sold!
Someone remember me that he is meant to be a striker.

Would the new Hearts stadium plan lead to overcrowding problems?
Yes, emergency vehicles would struggle to get in.
Yes, but these could be fixed by banning cars on match days.
No, there’s still plenty of space left for more fans.
